Police have found the biggest cannabis farm in Nottingham - which could grow £1m of the drug.

About 1,300 plants were found in Hendon Rise, St Ann's.

A former flooring wholesalers contained three growing rooms, two rooms for seedlings, living quarters and a basement full of compost.



Thousand of pounds of growing equipment was also seized after officers were called to the building yesterday lunchtime following reports of a burglary from a member of the public.

There has been a boom in cannabis farms in Notts in the last year, kitted-out with sophisticated growing equipment to yield the biggest crop.

Inspector Andy Townsend, commander for St Ann's and Sneinton, said: "This is the biggest factory of its kind I have come across.

"My lads attended after reports of a burglary and then called me straight away - they couldn't believe what they had found.

"It's great that we have found this and stopped it getting out there on the streets."

Fans and growing lights to help farm the drug had been illegally wired into the electricity supply.

Central Networks was called to disconnect the vast network of equipment which had been in operation for over a month.

It is believed two people were working round the clock at the factory and sleeping there. They were not there during the raid.

Living quarters contained mattresses, food and drink, clothes, a television, DVDs and a DVD player.

Most of the factories uncovered have been in rented homes.

Police said an average of five was raided every month in 2007. The drug was found in 280 houses in the county, compared to 177 the previous year.

And in the first three months of 2008, more than £1m of plants were seized.

Of the 280 houses raided, 170 were in the Nottingham city. About 100 were run by organised Chinese and Vietnamese gangs.

A police spokesperson said: "The St Ann's farm is the biggest ever in the city in relation to the number of plants found.

"We are tackling this drug problem all the time and take positive action every day.

"It is vital the public continue to provide us with information and they should be commended for the help they have given."
