If I was doing what your doing I would simple put an inch of either perlite or hydroton and cover with newsprint as it is biodegradeable and people use it in gardening all the time to prevent the coco from leaking through into the line that goes back to the resivoir. I would put the newsprint with about four inches at least high on each side one peice one way one peice the opposite like one north south one east west and one that goes nw to sw and maybe add an additional se to ne. to make sure no leak through of your coco what so ever and I would also mix my coco with the perlite or hydroton to help make sure you dont get any overflow.

Go for spreader mat. It does let roots grow through.

Sorry FF, I have been pretty sick past few weeks and haven t really been around. The spreader mat sounds like a fine idea. But I went with a roll of coco grow mat, I just cut it to the shape of the waterfarm, and place it in the bottom and fill with loose coco, and no problems. But either method will work.
