I've only been growing for 3 weeks now and I started out doing hydro. Everyone I know that grows said 'start out with soil or coco, and then if it's going well then think hydro' but all I wanted was bigger, faster, more. Hydro has been a bit of a pain in the ass so far as there's quite a lot of factors you have to take care of, and they're not all immediately obvious or common sense. I'm growing in coco as well now and it's 100% easier, and from what I've seen, with outstanding results. If you're not growing in volume (i.e. percy) and have the time, hand watering 8 plants once or twice a day is really no biggie and you have loads of advantages for the beginner but with pro results (all the stuff that PGW said above).
I'd say sod the expensive plastic (and that's really what it is) and get a bag of coco, some coco nutes and get going. But don't take my word for it - take a look at the diaries and see for yourself. It doesn't take custom plastic to grow amazing weed....I've already made that mistake and spent way way WAY too much money on stuff I could build in a few hours. If you want a simple flood and drain table it can be easier and cheaper to buy the plastic stuff just because of the convenient sizes and fittings but a dripper system is just a res, pump and multi hosed head with drippers!!
Or buy an amazon

I read LOADS of incredible grow diaries from very satisfied amazon users....not bad for £150. Again, expensive plastic. A tub, a tube, 4 micro sprinkler heads (cheapo) and some drilled lids. But it is convenient and works wonders. Once I've got coco and hydro sorted better I want to end up playing with an amazon.
But you can start today...seeds, CFL for veg, plastic cups, coco, nutes...away you go. I wish someone had told me before I spent the money...so now I'm telling you

You've got to be kidding me - 10 bucks for a plastic tap?! "Pro Drainage Kit" - that's what's called marketing bullshit on my planet!! And trust me, I'm no hardcore DIYer...
