I can't really get on the hortilux bandwagon either.

There are several bulbs with almost identical specifications to the Eye Hortilux that are significantly cheaper - GrowBright's SuperHPS line comes to mind.

I see this all the time with audio equipment - people who spend significantly extra money on brand names instead of specifications or performance that they actually need - and then go around talking up that particular item to anyone who'll listen for ever and ever.

Unless someone posts up some sort of substantive proof that - say - GrowBrights SuperHPS line of bulbs, for one, is lying or distorting specifications - I have to say that the Eye Hortilux is trading on name recognition and not a whole lot else.

Lastly, I will say I've noticed a HUGE difference between Regent Security Lighting (150w HPS) that I grew underground with for years and the newer agricultural bulbs that so many manufacturers are making. Industrial HPS's are very much darker - even to the naked eye - almost a murky orange after viewing the lighter hues of modern grow HPS bulbs - that said - I just don't think there is much of a difference between the various grow bulbs themselves.

I posed this question to my lighting director, who has 15+ years experience and an engineering degree. His opinion is that if the wattage is the same, the type of bulb the same, [HPS=HPS,MH=MH],the nanometer ratings will be close enough to be undiscernable to the naked eye.Different gases used in different ratios will produce a specific hue but is still within a given spectrum range.Variables such as gas mixture, alloy of the element, power delivery[low frequency magnetic coil as opposed to high frequency digital] all have an effect but will perform within a specific wavelength. He also opinions that a light should be sized by the amount of vegetation, not just room size.I'll pick his brain on this later.I'm slowly getting him interested in grow lighting,so maybe I can get him to share more of his considerable knowledge.
