Question Intake/Exhaust Vs. Sealed Room

Sealed rooms seem much more common in North America whereas the standard in europe is to use an intake & exhaust fan.

How do you prefer your rooms & why?

sealed rooms are pretty difficult to pull off here in soCal due to high temps and high electric bills.

i've done both and i'd have to say that Intake/Exhaust is much more efficient in a region where high temps are a problem.

...unless of course you can put in a split system. those things kick ass!

I've always used some form of intake/extraction system, but I've decided to build a totally sealed room. The following were determiners in my decision:

1. No heat sig
2. No odor
3. No noice (or very lil using inverter tech. on mini-split)
4. Huge potential for sterile environment
5. Stable temps and humidity if running 12/12 24/7 I.E. 3 rooms (2 bloom, 1 lung) lights in one of rooms always on. Also 2 lights per ballast this way -just stick it on a flip- 12hrs in one then bam 12hrs in next. Temps r easier to maintain this way, less temp fluctuation = less humidity.
6. Outdoor temps r on the constant rise in my region. Record temps last few years, hard to use intake/extraction to effectively cool in this situation. Gonna have to spring for a new split a/c anyhow.
7. No glass equals more Lumens, fuller spectrum. Oh yeah, no active cooling on the lights either, just a lot of air moving right above the plant canopy.

Anywho, currently building 3 sealed rooms, will post flicks after i bust some.

With Respect, Chili

When I ran a room instead of the cabinet that I use now, I ran 'em sealed. Why?....I liked the simplicity and less expense of not having all the fans/ductwork. Secondly, I always found it easier to control temp and humidity with A/C as opposed to more intake and more exhaust movement. One last thing to consider....if you set it up as a sealed room and don't like it after a grow or two, cutting holes and adding ventilation is somewhat easier that patching them back up to go from vented to sealed. Juss my opinion, others results will vary.

Thanks PGW, very informative as usual. Trying to decide but thinking of just forgetting the flip and just running more tables. Also can't decide if I want to pull air from outside through the hoods and exhaust into the crawl-space, or go open hood, w/ no active cooling on hoods. Just control the whole trip w/ a/c and dehumidifier. Get more lumens than with glass n sealed hoods... IMVHO

Appreciate your first hand knowledge.

Will put this in practice for myself as soon as I can come up w/ the bread-about 2 large-for a mini-split w/ inverter tech.

Sorry What What not trying to hijack your thread, just also have a lot of interest in the subject.

Hi Guys

In the last 22 - 23 years i have ran both and will never intake or exhaust again.

Why pull air in at 400 ppm when you can have 1500ppm all the time.
Why pull in the wrong temp air (diff temps year round)
Why pull in unwanted insects (havnt had insect prob in last 12 years)
Why exhaust stink

There is so many why's i could be here all day.

Be god in your own room, provide what you need in everyway, in most cases your providing more than god himself can

Lets talk about the downfalls and i only know one, the use of electricity.

must have's for sealed rooms

a/c (split unit if you live in a very cold climate 3000.00)
lights (more the better, remember your replicating the sun, DO NOT USE 600"S)
Fans (big ones)
cool tubes (minimum 8 inch)
Dehumidifiers for lights off (BIG ONES, 70 PINT PER 24 HRS)

tHESE ARE YOUR BASICS we still have all the hydro setup as well.

I gave up on a 12 ft x 12ft room intake/exhaust for a room 7ft x 7ft sealed enclosure. I yielded 3.5 pounds more from the small room as i did the big room.

any questions feel free to ask guys, i will answer any question !!

Default $$

chilliwalt, you will need alot more than 2 large for your a/c split unit, beleive me. I just spent 10,000.00 $ 2 x 3ton.

If you dont live in a wintery climate split units are not the way to go, i had not choice since we get -30 here in the winter. A a/c unit that has ducting and can blow to the back corners is optimal. I am finding a big temp difference at the farthest points form the a/c outake. After this run i will install 2 4inch vortex fans to suck in the cold air and transport it back to the back corners.

Whatever you do guys don skimp on the a/c unit, whatever you feel the size you need after doing your research...... double it !!!
Cool tubes help this out immensely !!

I just put in a mini split cooling only, best money I ever spent added two more lights still runs cooler than my last room, totally sealed 1500 ppms way less things to worry about only prob we had was humidity when lights off went to 87% but dehumidifier fixed that plug and grow.
