There are two commonly used methods to determine what size of extraction fan you will need in your growroom.
In the first method, people have commonly used Length x Width x Height to calculate the volume of the grow room and then multiplied by twenty. For example if your growroom is 2m x 2m x 2m then to ensure the air was exchanged at least once in an hour, you would need a fan capable of extracting 8m an hour. However it is commonly accepted that cannabis plants require that the air be exchanged at least 20 times an hour so we need a fan capable of extracting 2 x 2 x 2 x 20 therefore we actually need a fan capable of extracting at least 160m an hour.
To calculate what extraction power you need using this method just fill out the fields below. A synopsis based upon your input will be displayed next to your input.
Method 1
Whilst the above method is a fairly good guide as to what size extraction fan you need, it is quite clear that this will not work in all circumstances. It does not take into account the wattage used for your lights or other equipment. A 1Kw High Pressure Sodium Lamp used in a 1m x 1m x 2m room is most definately going to need more extraction than the above method would suggest. According to the above method you would only need a fan capable of extracting 40m an hour. This is most definately not the case and your plants would fry and die relatively quickly. For this reason a second method of calculating extraction has been devised and is based on extracting the total heat generated from your equipment.
