i'm just over 2 weeks into flowering and want the lower buds on my plants to receive as much light as possible. i wanna know if you can trim off too many fan leaves. i cut off all the bigger leaves and many of the small ones blocking any light to lower buds. is this ok or should i be leaving more fan leaves?

when i say trim, i mean cut off the whole leaf at it's base. i don't clip the ends and leave most of it or anything.

i see many grows on here that look as if the plant isn't trimmed at all so today after i had already thinned everything out i was wondering if i was doing something i shouldn't.

Yes, you can take too many fans off. Another way to handle canopy control is to remove the lower bud sites, as they don't have good POTential anyway.

I would ditch the lower bud sites and leave the fans. Those lower sites produce almost nothing and the plant will concentrate the energy on the upper buds. Fans are solar panels for the plant. Peace GS

Ive been plucking fan leafs for years, ive run a ton of test, it helps my yeild and quality

I start in veg, and usually pluck once a week. in flower I typically dont pluck until wk, and thats it. its strain specific so I suggest running some side by sides

what i do is pull the fan leaf down and try to pull it through the canopy without bending or damaging the leaf or its stem, then get a piece of wire, make a hook in either end and hook 1 side to the main branch and the other side to the stem of the leaf, i just do it to the big 1s higher up the plant, i trim the bottom bud sites too. hb

Yes you want to do that AND yes you can take too many off. The leaves are the storage cells of the plant. Not enough leaf, not enough food for bud development.

Like everyone is saying, it's necessary for you to remove some of the fans that are blocking your bud sites...I'd just add that you want to remove them over time that's why it helps to start early. You take too many off at once and you ARE going to stress your plant. You aren't going to greatly change your yield by removing the lower sites, but some just consider them a waste of time. I guess that decision is mostly governed by how many plants you are running, got a big load-cut em off...got 4 plants who cares.

I'll trim the bottom bud spots tonite and when the leaves grow back i'll leave them alone except for an few that may be blocking light to lower bud spots. I need to get some clones going so i'll take them from the lower of my plants tonite. Thatll take care of 2 problems. Is there anything I should worry about taking clones from flowering plants?

Don't have the space to clone myself...but yes, there is a difference between cloning from a mother in veg and one in flower. No problem with doing it but if memory serves me right it's going to take the clone a couple of extra weeks to turn back into the veg stage. If you don't know if the mom is actually a mom you have to flower her in order to find out for sure, so this is how you would clone from her after doing that. Hope it helps a bit and answers your ? .

alot of good strains have such big leaves they hinder the branches from growing even when there young, so i take 3 or 4 of the top sets of leafs off(ones at bottom of branches), But Not the very top set of big leafs, imo and experience make for better longer healthier branches and nodes and makes an more even canopy. but its not for every plant. these where from seed and i did the above it all 4, there so healthy you cant even tell i took all those HUGE leafs off like ah week ago. Yes that second one was ah little dry, which is rare for me to let happen.lol

I wouldn't recommend cloning from a flowering plant at all. Not unless there is absolutely no way to ever get that strain again. I don't know your situation but cloning from a plant 2 weeks into flowering is just setting yourself up with stressed out babies.

I'm gonna trim off theelower bud sites anyway so I might as well dip them in some cloning solution.

I usually take anything touching the container or coco off as I don't allow a stairway to heaven for the bugs. As for plucking I don't do that but I do think about it often. I figure if the plant didn't want them there then it wouldn't spend the resources to produce large energy factories. Most lower buds end up as hash popcorn anyways. If you think about it why would the plant regrow the fans that you removed a week prior if it didn't need them? Seems like the only benefit would be one week of light penetration for the cost of one weeks worth of leaf production instead of bud production. Now if a fan is yellowing and obviously being sucked clean of all nutes and is 90% yellow or dead, then I help her out and pluck it. If the plant doesn't want a leaf it drops it. Just my 2 cents. Hey how do you make a cents sign on a pc?

I have cloned flowering plants to see if they will root in that emergency situation. I have 4 going right now in 4" pots. It will take a couple weeks to start vegging again but just be patient and treat it as a "sick" gem and it will recover in about a months time. Sometimes I use 24/7 light to help it get that 12/12 out of the system.

Cheers,
Crom

When I do take clones from the plants should I go 24/0 until they've formed roots, let them veg for a week or 2 then back to 12/12?I wanna perpetual grow and I've read leaving the plant on 24/0 for a week or 2 will allow them to grow alittle better to prepare them for 12/12.

my mate had to take a cut off his white bubba 14-17 days into bloom, took a little longer to root tho, he's had the light on 24/7 and she grew out normal leaves nearly straight away, 1or2 1 leafers thats it, his thread is called 'tent full of lil raskals' dont know how to put threads up in links lol but have a look. hb

Once it's rooted you'll observe a spiral leaf shape indicating the switch back to vegetative growth. From what I have observed IME the next node after the swirled leaf is the veg phase. It all depends on when you cut the clones and how far along in bloom. I got good roots in 14 days in an EZ Cloner. These look like little sample buds on a toothpick lol triches and all. They are starting to turn around though. I'll snap some shots tomorrow.

Cheers,
Crom

Not much of the main fans will regrow. No worries taking cuts from flowering plants, in fact, some folks find they root faster. That said, expect the new growth from the cuttings to be funky, i.e. single and triple-lobed leaves instead of the usual five to eleven lobes.

Canopy control REALLY takes a lot of practice, I'm still working on refining the technique as I know I don't have it down completely.

i dont like to take clones from budn plants but its No problem and Even makes the clones root in a real 2 to 4 days, they root 4 to 8 times quicker the veg'n plants.

Edit= they root that fast in an aero cloner.
