MrSoul's rocks and tray system

MrSoul's hydro system is a unique approach to hydroponic growing that uses clay grow rocks instead of traditional rockwool slabs. By using expanded clay medium, MrSoul has discovered that this setup performs better and is reusable, making it a more sustainable and efficient option for growers.

4 x 4 Cells

In MrSoul's hydro system, the grow space is divided into 4' x 4' cells with a 1000-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) light centered above each cell. Each cell consists of five Hydrofarm Quantum RW slab trays (four parallel, one perpendicular) filled with 2 inches of Hydroton. Three-inch rock wool cubes are partially buried in the Hydroton, with four plants per tray.

Nutrient Solution and Irrigation

A DynaBloom nutrient solution (1200 ppm/6.0 pH) is pumped to each plant site using a Chapin Spray Tube (N type) on a schedule of 20 minutes ON and 10 minutes OFF. The trays have been modified to allow one inch of flooding to ensure consistent and efficient nutrient delivery.

Oxygenation

Supplying sufficient oxygen to the roots is crucial for successful growth. In MrSoul's setup, the nutrient solution picks up oxygen from the spraying process and in the cascading overflow through 2" PVC tubing en route to a remote reservoir (in a cool room) where a bubble wand placed under the pump adds even more oxygen.

Clone Installation

Before placing the clones into the system, each tray is prepared with a Chapin Spray Tube and a modified plastic cup used as an overflow to create the desired water level. The 3" rock wool cubes are then half-buried in the Hydroton, and each clone gets its own sprayer. MrSoul found that running the sprayers 24/7 works as well or better than using on/off cycles.

Yield

When growing heavier varieties like Genius, MrSoul's hydro system can produce impressive yields of 1 to 1.25 pounds per 1000-watt light. These results highlight the effectiveness of using clay grow rocks as a medium in hydroponic systems and demonstrate the potential for increased sustainability and efficiency in this method of growing.

Conclusion

MrSoul's innovative hydro system showcases the advantages of using clay grow rocks instead of traditional rockwool slabs. With impressive yields, reusable materials, and efficient nutrient delivery, this system offers a sustainable and effective option for hydroponic growers looking to optimize their setups.
