f3 year is here.
8 big beautiful females survived selection criteria.
They were all sown in early April, grew to a good sized shrub, auto-flowered, and were ready for harvest before September.
They all had pleasant smells, and demonstrated a resistance to brown mold (a devastating local endemic).
Flowers would all classify as open structure.
The one plant from last year that showed more desirable "nugget" flower form, one of the two BD grown seeds, but my trap like record keeping system sprung a leak.
I plan to explore both this summer, so follow along.

Last years FYI.

2017 Synopsis:
Hundreds of seeds were splashed in April.
Many sprouted.
Runts were abundant, thanked for their participation, then destroyed with fire.
Approximately 20 great big plants grew well, but never flowered.
8 plants made it into the "gotta check this out" stage.

I post now the first f3 germination test.
So a good germination will be welcome, but the carnage will harsh.
Some few may be granted a reprieve.
Just don't have the room, but with spring planting not far off, who knows what space might be concocted.

I wish to thank four growers for their participation.

Results are starting to come in.
20180129 072303

Of 80 seeds getting the splash, these are the only sprouts thus far.
And, yes I have put them into rapid rooter plugs.
Just can't help it.
No idea how I will find space for these.

Numbers are in, and there are some clear winners.
Germination rate from ten-seed trial after 5 days.
JW#1 60%
CM#1 100%
CM#2 90%
CM#3 100%
KI#1 20%
KI#2 80%
BD#1 40%
BD#2 90%
As feared, some survived.
20180131 074606

As these are regular seeds, I planted at least two of each.

Almost two weeks into this germination test, and there are many survivors.
That's about 19 too many, but there you are.
20180208 082746

At least one of each line, and in the case of CM#3 there are 5 members.
CM#3 was a very aggressive germinator, and thus received early and active over attention, and now I can't bring myself to cull any.
Plan to cull males, and track how well the girls follow the hoped for f3 narrowing of variance, and grow mostly like their mothers.

So we have a grow log.
This is the first time using Rapid Rooters for seed germination.
I like the ease of up potting, which at this tender size can be challenging.

About six weeks into this extended germination test and room has opened up for some up-potting.
20180313 082742

That lower left small one is the only mutant, but a few smalls will probably fail to get up-potted.

Ten weeks on the germination test survivors, and a CM#1 has started flowering.
20180409 143540

Eleven plants remain with three still yet to be sexed.
20180409 143643

In other big seasonal news, allow me to present the 2018 Auto Mango seedlings.
20180409 143855

Splashed on 2 April 2018, got good germination and full representation from all eight lines.
Like last season, I will be fostering these out to interior Alaska gardeners who wish to add some of these to their garden.

To yield useful breeding information I'm thinking about including a form with each plant:

2018 FBXseeds Auto Mango (FYI: FBX is a truck freight designation for Fairbanks)
plant ID____________
date of flower onset___________________plant height(inches above ground)_______________________
date of harvest_____________________
harvest notes________________________
pest notes____________________________
bud notes_____________________________

Put this onto a plant tag, with a link to this thread for photo updates and readers general amusement.

Almost three months in on these germination test plants, and two have yet to start flowering.
This is about as late an onset as I can tolerate if I want to harvest before 5 months.
Will likely cull them.
20180425 131700

That first one to start flowering continues to do well.
I think I can see the start of a nug in there.
And the leaves look to be where the trichomes are located.
20180425 144304

And the seedlings are doing fine at 23 days.

Give her another month to fill in and we might have something here.
I see frost.
20180529 140141

Had to put them outside today. The smell when hauling them through the house was fantastic, and brought new enthusiasm for this project.
Heat issues in the basement even in Alaska.
I count on cooler outside tamps for my thermostatically activated make-up air vent.
20180529 135944

These are the surviving 7 from the germination test.
I'm sadly missing a JW#1 in this found as I wanted to see her perform like her mother.
The CM#1&3 look to be the best flower structure of this bunch.
20180528 161402

These are some of the outdoor crop.
Tall with not much side growth.
These trays have two each of the eight f3 seed lines.
I have back-up replacement plants should any of these be male.
I'm only keeping a few males in a sequestered part of the garden.(other side of the greenhouse)

Threat of cold wet windy weather required that a lash-up be performed.
20180609 180730

Made it out of a corner of a big ass piece that I didn't want to cut.
20180609 180707

Should keep them dry unless the entire thing gets blown out.
Some of these are getting close to harvest, which is good in that this is August for them where they on a summer schedule. This also means that all these get harvested at the end of June.
20180607 170053

This is one each of this summers breeders.
They need to veg strongly, and start to flower before the end of June.
20180609 180006

The challenge question is the choice of two males.
Two CM#2 males; one precocious, and one just starting to flower.
Who would make the better pollen donor?
That early to flower trait might dwarf the final shrub.
But I am sure to have plenty of pollen when needed.
I'm keeping them both alive for now.

First up is to bring an end to the germ test girls.
20180705 124335

Five left to be harvested very soon. I took two last week and ran a cold iso extraction on fresh frozen veg.
Worked out nicely, but my yield was low.
20180703 101937

This seasons outdoor plants are all looking good.
Only a few have yet to start flowering.
Will probably cull failed flowers in a few weeks, as there just will not be enough time for them to finish.
The rest are ready for pollen, and seed making.
No occurrence of any brown mold.

Three of 23 culled for failure to flower.

Dispassionate assassination is an acquired skill in the breeding game.
Still working on this skill.

Sunny morning light on the auto garden.
20180719 092338
These two exemplify a selection criteria that will likely determine which plants will be used for further explorations.
20180719 092006

The plant on the left is long stemmed with few flowers while on the right the stems are short and packed with flowers.
All the plants seem to fall into one of these two growth forms.
I will be pursuing the shorter stem varieties.

The initial selection criteria for mold resistance and flower timing seem to be well constrained as there has been no sign of mold and only three of 13 failed timely flower set, and none flowered so early as to dwarf the adult.

With about three weeks to go, some of these girls are fattening up.
20180811 093409
20180811 093423

Bud structure is still open, but much more of it stacked together.
These are two of the plants I intend to select for.
No sign of the dreaded brown mold.
