Here’s a dirt cheap method of cloning I’ve been using lately. I’ve retired my OXY Cloner and am using these propagation trays instead. I may make a separate post showing what I do step by step but here’s a quick rundown.

B6B5A93E 236D 4968 84E5 7A2ECFC04357

All components from the top going clockwise. Bottom tray, clear dome, 3d printed spacer, inner tray.

Cloner fully assembled.

Inner tray numbered so I can keep track of my cuttings.

D9C084C8 32F5 463E 9708 867D941F4C04

Clonex gel and rapid rooter plugs.

28A2061C 832E 4538 B3C7 4B2EE2308508

Prepared cutting dipped in clonex. You can use a tool to rub the gel on the cutting, I just got lazy and dipped it.

Cutting in the inner tray ready to go.

445769FE 4CAE 4ED8 B067 D0829B7C689D

I put about 1/4” of water in the bottom to provide moisture to them so the plugs don’t dry out completely.

B5BA1BEC D007 4C22 968A 2E352517EA15

All set to go. Now the waiting game begins. I’ve been getting 100% rooting in under 14 days. Some strains root in 3 days others take longer. Just depends on the strain.

No added heat is required and this just occupies a small section in my veg chamber.

The spacer was added so I could use taller cuttings but is not required if you take smaller cuts. You can also punch holes in the lid if you want and two of these occupy less space than the oxy cloner and doesn’t require any maintenance. Between each session I clean the trays in the sink with soap water and let them dry. Three of these occupy about the same space as my 20 site oxy cloner. So that’s 36 cuts for the same space. Not too shabby.

This all costs practically nothing to buy and use.

12 trays and domes were $14
Clonex Gel was $10-15 (and lasts forever)
Rapid rooter plugs were $20 for 50 of them
3d printed spacer cost $1 in materials

Damn, they are really taking off now! I have never let mine get that big in Solo cups, I think I have probably been up-potting them way too soon. Probably slows my growth...

Just recently I had a rooted clone that got about 12” tall in the solo cup. I got lazy and just recently up potted it. I actually had a couple that size. AK47 loves to grow.

Btw I’m using BioBizz Light Mix soil straight out of the bag. I’ve not fed them yet either at this point. No nute burn so far. It’s a perfect soil blend for seedlings and freshly rooted clones. It also makes a good cutting medium for hotter soils like FFOF instead of using coco which really fucks with things when too much of it is used.

Does the 1/4" of water in the tray get you through the process? Or do you have to add water along the way? I'm going to be embarking on this for the first time soon.

Oh, and do you soak the rapid rooter plugs before you use them? Tap or solution?

It's funny how paranoia from first attempts can lead to so many questions. lol

The water it the bottom just helps keep them moist but not wet. Every couple days I have a dropper I use to suck up the water and drip it on the plugs to get them wet. Just do that every few days as they develop roots. I don’t soak the plugs but I do drip some water on them so they are wet starting out. Soaking them would do the same thing so whatever works for you.

I do add a little more water along the way but the water at the bottom just keeps the cuttings from drying out. It might not be needed but I’ve had good luck doing it.

Awesome thanks. I know it's supposed to be hailed as really easy. My brain just acts like a sponge before I embark on something for the first time. I like to try and understand everything so I'm prepared. I have a fault of trying to perfect everything I do.

No worries bro. Cloning isn’t hard it’s just using the OXY Cloner wasn’t convenient at all. And was starting to get increasingly poor results with it. Mostly due to temps this time of year but also it was becoming a hassle to maintain. Couple that with the fact that this method seems to work better (in my situation) and it’s almost a no brainer. I was actually testing this method out hoping it wouldn’t beat the Oxy Cloner so I could justify using it and it’s price. But my experiment shocked me and so I’ve adapted and made the change.

Another pic of both sections. The old pot is taken off the base and the new section is put on the base for filling. This eliminates messes on my floor.

Viola. Transplanting done. Pot has been expanded to allow the continued growth of the roots without disturbing the root ball. Life goes on as if nothing happened. No mess to clean up and it took about 30 seconds to do from beginning to end.

Thanks bro!

It can also be used with coco or hydroponics. I have bases for it that allow drainage to drain lines or even RDWC. So once you buy one you don’t need much to go hydro or soil anytime you want. Just switch grow mediums between grows.
