Hi what are ways to force flower plants early outside? Is it possible to make them pot bound thus induce flowering? As roots stop growth during flowering. I dont fancy covering them up every night so would need an easier way. or could you cover them for a few days to force it into flowering?

thanks

The only way to force flower is to give them at least 12 hours of dark. If you let them get root bound they aren't going to flower there going to start loosing leaves from the bottom up. I might be wrong and some one will correct if I am but the only thing that induces flower is the photo period (light cycle).

your best bet would be to look for an autoflowering strain like lowrider or lowrider hybrids...
i can tell you from personal experience being rootbound will not induce flowering and roots do not stop growing when you flower...like rural said you either need to induce them with the photo period , cover them everyday or use autoflowering genetics..if you lived close to the equator you could pull it off but seeing as you live in the uk, i dont think thats possible..ive transplanted a plant from a party cup into a 5 gallon container the day i flipped it to 12/12 and by the time it was ready to harvest i flipped the bucket upside down and it had roots all along the bottom and sides of the 5 gallon bucket...also if you cover them im pretty sure you should cover them the whole time or else you might risk them trying to re-veg on you..good luck

If you're religious about it you can light block them each day to get 12/12 with lightproof covering.. Someone sells an automating outdoor covering system that wouldn't be that hard to replicate if you don't have the cash. Otherwise, as the others have said, it's autos or wait.

Yeah i have autos on the go as well its just they not going to get me much bud to last me till September time when the big plants are hopefully ready. I guess il give it a miss then as its quite a way to my grow spots.

thanks

So you think they would go back to veg after like 2 weeks of covering up?

From what I understand some indica's will continue to flower after a few weeks of 12/12 no matter the light cycle. I read it somewhere but I've never tried it.

Autoflower would work well I'd think, I bring mine inside for 12 hours each night..

I've seen somewhere about giving plants 2or3 days total darkness triggers plants into flowering and they dont revert back to veg,i'm sure it was on here somewhere

i was just reading an article in skunk where they were talking about this subject...covering the plants with black visqueen seems to be the best option..from what they were saying in the article, the sun was rising at about 6am...they would cover the plants at 6pm with black plastic and then remove the cover at 9:30 pm (after dusk)...this would reduce the humidity and amount of dew on the plants...peace and good luck. j

My dream is to run a greenhouse that will black out on a timer with nice ventilation, heater, cfls to veg, 15' roof, 20'X60', 99 plants, 3 crops a year, I dont ask much..........

I recommend if your looking at pulling a black tarp over your plants. You get a black/white one. It can get pretty hot under a pure black tarp while the sun is still shining. Use the white side out. In addition you could add a couple underground ducts for intake and exhaust; hook a two can fans up to them. It will help with air flow under the tarp. I think farmtek sells a black/white; just make sure it's really light tight, a cheap one will leak light. A good tarp will have laser welded seems.

It really varies from plant to plant when trying to grow out of season with some of these techniques. What Ive been doing every year for the last few years is to veg certain plants as big as I can get them indoors on 24 hour light cycle. Then around april 1is( timing varies on location and when last freeze comes and also what plants) Ill put them outside. No black box, no manipulating light schedules..no nothing...They flower and some plants will finish depending on the strain. The pre98bubba does this well. I can pull a nice crop with her outside by june without a black box as long as she is veged indoors on 24 hours and stuck outside.

This doesnt work well with more sativa based genes as they wanna start going back into veg before theyve really finished flowering. This is the only way Ive found to date to pull early(out of season) crops without a blackbox or supplemental lighting and without manipulating light cycles.

Loompa: That's what I'm doing with a Thick Wicked this year. It's a trial run but so far so good. I have her in a Solexx greenhouse so it stay nice and warm. I'll have to try the Bubba next year:)

Nice man, a southern oregon greenhouse man who knows what a Farmtek blackbox cover is :)

Definately try the bubba cut thats going around. It pulls out of season crops nicely. I have also been able to get a few sativa hybrids to finish. Usually I have to start them flowering indoors for 2 weeks before I set them outside, and I can coax a few of those sativas to yield nice flowers. I have an indi dom pheno from Shantis afghan haze outside flowering right now. I started her flowering indoors for 2 weeks and stuck her out the last week of march. Shes still flowering like a champ and taking the cold temps nicely. A few frostbit leaves...but nothing thats damaging the flowers. And now the weather is finally starting to warm up a bit and shes started to really please her daddy.

very good advice i live in the tropics and mainly use sativas because thats the only thing that will veg with very little daylight hours....if i was to force flower id stay away from the dominant sativas

cover the plant for the three extra houses of sun, example sunrise at 5am sun set at 7, cover them from 5-8, i think after about a month they dont need to be coverd and they will finish

if they're small enough, enclose the plant in 1" chicken wire(top too)...tape 2 black heavy trash bags together, and use that as a shroud. that's what i did last year...I just shrouded them for 12-13 hrs.(6pm to 7am) EVERY DAY. it WILL work... that's how I short season plants. now I have a shed, but that only works with buckets...I can't move the in-ground plants! I would just bend the top of the chicken wire closed, so it had a half burrito shape...then the wood rats stay out and I have a frame for 'baggin' it'.
