What do you guys know about Thermal Imagining - IR Cameras?
How much material can they penetrate? concrete? steel?
Can it see through the roof of your house with no problem since it is only plywood and singles?
Can it only see heat escaping through a window well?

What do you know about it?
I know there is anti foil but not sure how well it works.

The reason i ask is i was watching DEA on Spike tv and they busted a grow op in some dudes basement. To obtain the search warranty they took there chopper up and used the thermal imagining camera. The show you what his house looked like and the neighbors and should you how they could tell.
To me the heat source didn't look to much different from the neighbors.

The guy growing used his whole basement with lights hanging everywhere and had like 300 plants. He also has no odor control. He was an idiot.

saw that show, they already had a warrant to do a fly over. they had a snitch give information that he or she as seen the grow op, then the DEA has to take that to a judge and then get granted a warrant for a fly over. basement seals alot of the heat, I've heard running during the day and they cant see shit

IR can't "see thru" anything. They simply detect temperature differences. Most grow that get busted with IR get caught venting hot air outside. It can tell if one room in the house is hotter than the other rooms by the color of the window or walls. Things that are hotter appear whiter, things that are cooler appear darker. It cannot see thru a roof or a wall. It can however tell if a particular room is signifigantly hotter than adjacent rooms simply by color difference. This throws up a red flag.If you have good insulation in your house with double paned windows and don't vent hot air outside you should be fine. Or you can do what I do...run lights during day, that way room is cool at night which is the only time they can use IR efficiently. Useing IR searches is technically illegal in the US but that doesn't seem to stop judges from issueing search warrants on that info alone. If it goes to court, the prosecution and police will conveniently make up other reasons for probable cause to justify the warrant. They have ways around the law as well...plus they make very good liars in court. Hope this helps.

To begin with they can't IR your house or whatever you grow in unless they get a warrent. IF THEY DO GET A WARRENT, THEY WILL IR YOUR HOUSE. They can only figure it out if 1 area of the house has more heat than the rest OR if they see exhaust heat bieng removed from your house (ex. having your exhaust fans blowing the heat out of your house).
There are several things you can do to prevent from bieng caught with an IR camera. Thermal Shield or Poly shield can be purchased at exclusive Hydroponic stores or at LOWES. You can cover all the walls and roof of your grow area as well as the floor and roof of your attic. Thermal shield or poly shield can almost COMPLETELY eliminate the heat detected by IR cameras. Another solution is to get as much extra insulation as you can in your attic above the grow room. This will allow you to easily keep your room cooler.

Yeh the new chopper is a nightmare. They got a cutting factory the first test flight. Yep a cuting factory , meaning no flowering plants only vegging moms and rooting cuts. That show how good it smell's. They first look for heat then they look for the Air outcome from the builkding and take smell sample's. THEY DONT NEED A WARENT FOR THAT IN HOLLAND.

I know a few things about this subject. Firstly if you are venting properly, then in the end your room won't be hot! The only thing that will be hot and be recognized in a signature is the attic or wherever your ventilation and possibly ballasts are, and then the "plume" of exhaust coming out like a chimney from wherever the final exhaust is.

So in reality if you were that paranoid, all it would take is routing a couple extra a/c ducts and returns into the attic itself keeping the whole thing nice and cool and not giving away ANY signature.

All you need to make sure your final exhaust is some how cooled down before it is just thrown outside, that is really the main burn.

All it takes is a regular heat signature camera and a guy on the ground to see the plume, it is really, really obvious. It is especially obvious if the temp difference between the hot grow room you are exhausting and the outside temp itself is great; like where it snows or gets frozen over.

The only true answer to this if one is that paranoid about it, is you need a totally separate room almost, that is the 'exhaust room' where all the air is cooled down totally before it is exhausted.


The final thing I'll say about all this, is I don't all what I just said is really necessary in the first place. As long as you have the smell controlled, and you do not have obviously visual ducting that looks suspicious, I think you are fine.

Let's face it though, if you are on their list and they are trying to get warrants on you to search etc....your biggest mistake in security has already happened and you are already screwed but you don't know it yet.
Not a good thing for anyone....
