Hi friends,

I am wondering if we have any members who are Bangkok expats.

I will be heading to Thailand and Cambodia for a well-deserved vacation in March, and will be in Bangkok for a couple of days in early March. It would be fun to have someone to meet up with, buy a drink for, and have a chat with.

I know it's a long shot, but I thought I'd ask...

cheers,
Mr. Molecule

Yeah, I've got a strong urge to just hold out and not do anything while in Thailand, at least in Bangkok for sure where the chances of getting popped is the highest by far. I'm going down south to the Krabi area only 3 days after getting to Thailand, and my research is indicating strongly that cannabis is much more tolerated down there. In fact, they have a few "Thai Rastas" down in those parts who own bars and such and it's known that they sell stuff. Now, common sense tells you that if I were able to find out that info so readily on the internet, these Thairastafarians must be pretty notorious on their home turf. So why don't they get busted, you might ask? I'm thinking that they certainly must have "arrangements" with the local police. In fact, one of these bars (which I intend to visit, because of course I must) is on the same street as the police station and only about 25 yards away from it. It will be tough to resist doing any for the five days or so that I'll be in southern Thailand before moving on to Cambodia... especially if one of these rastas produces something interesting looking rather than the oxidized and unpalatable brown stuff that is seen most of the time.

Once I get to Cambodia, yeah, no paranoid vibes necessary. Besides, I don't smoke anymore, so I'll be using a small handheld vaporizer which is obviously far more discreet than smoking. My thought was to leave it brand new and clean until I get to Cambodia, because that way it obviously is brand new if it gets pulled from my bag at any point. I plan to bring some dried peppermint leaf with me along with a printed out article extolling the virtues of vaporizing peppermint as an alternative medicine modality for clearing the lungs (I'm curious to try this out for real anyway). And so if some overzealous airport officer pulled it out and eyed it with suspicion, I would explain that it is a personal medical device and that I plan to use it to vaporize peppermint to clear my lungs of the air pollution of Bangkok and other cities with lots of diesel fumes. (Again, this is not a bad idea in reality.) That's unlikely though because if it is still like I remember it in my past trips, they really don't search farang tourists who are arriving.

I'm really hoping to find some interesting "bush Cambodian" because I know it's not all exactly the same, there are various lines and things. What I hear is that the best stuff can be found in Kampot, where I will be going. So that should be interesting to see what that means.

Well how can I deny that nice request? I won't be doing video because I simply don't have the charisma of all these ridiculous narcissistic YouTube stars, but I was actually planning on taking many good photos as this will be the first time I will have a good higher-megapixel camera capable of excellent quality shots (my phone). This will be my fifth trip to Thailand, as I was there twice in 1988, once in 2001, and once in 2003, and in none of those trips did I have a decent camera. In 1988 we were still in the dark ages of instamatic cameras. I don't think I even brought a camera in 2001 nor in 2003, and cell phones didn't have nice cameras yet in those days. In fact I remember that my cell phone stayed home or something on those trips since in those days it was still a hassle to try to get Thai service on your US phone... you'd have to do some expensive roaming shit. But obviously we are in an entirely different age today, and it's nice to know that I will be able to get great high-rez shots. I'll probably have to do a lot of uploading to my laptop or to Dropbox to keep them off my phone's storage.

Let me tell you, I was amazed at how reasonable the airfare was... I was expecting $1700 or something like that, and it was less than $700 (from San Francisco). Just start tucking away money every chance you get for a Thailand Trip Fund, give yourselves a couple/few years if you need to... you'll make it if you're dedicated to doing it.

See when im on vacation I could care less about wee when I was in Mexico I had every chance in the world to buy weed and didn't id rather not smoke if I have to pay for crap that my friends back home throw away Lol. I smoke one joint with some Canadians and was disappointed with his 80 dollar 8th.
To me Thailand is all about the food that's all I want is to try any and everything regardless of what's in it

My kid needs to hurry up and get bigger, I sure do miss traveling. 3rd world can be really cheap or really expensive, once there you can get by on not much. My tip would be to hit up some thai (or wherever) message boards and figure out where the local populations go and stay for their vacations if staying within their respective countries, just use Google translate or whatever. Thailand would be cool but I would stay away from Bangkok and phuket, but I try and avoid touristy stuff as much as possible anywhere I go so your mileage may vary. Vietnam is the next place I would like to go; all of Southeast Asia is pretty awesome and would be cool to explore.

Well gravekat, you certainly have your priorities straight with that! The food is the ultimate reason to be there. Very brave of you too to be willing to try everything no matter what. I love many things in Thai food and have been eating Thai food since about 1982, but despite that, not only am I not free of certain prejudices against a few things, but health-wise there are some things that they eat tons of that I can't really eat—deep fried food for one example. They eat so much of it, but I almost never eat it because my body just doesn't process it well. I also can't eat all the organ meats that they do, and the shellfish, and the big hunks of boiled blood they put in things.

I can get by a few days in Thailand without any cannabis, but I couldn't easily go three weeks without any. Or at least I would prefer not to, my body is so used to it in a medical/holistic context and because for me the joy of traveling is so enhanced by the feeling of it.

Since I've been to Thailand four times before, I felt it was time to give another country a chance, and Cambodia was irresistible with its combo of interesting Thai-like food, SE Asian setting, Buddhism, and easy + relatively safe canna-enjoyment (yet I'm still giving about 45% of the trip to Thailand, so that shows you how deep it has its hooks in me!).

That depends on the level of spendiness you want to have, especially with regard to hotels. That variable is a big one. Some people like to go cheaper on the hotels to give them more $ for the food, and others vice versa. On this particular trip I'm not in the mood to go cheap on either one since I've been waiting 13 years to do it.

To let you know what I'm doing on this trip, I've loaded a debit card dedicated to this trip with about $2400... that's after paying $700 for the round-trip tickets. But if I had a lady with me that amount would still suffice and be pretty comfortable (though I find it hard to imagine bringing a wife or girlfriend to Thailand, but that's a whole different subject). I'm choosing hotels in the $30-40 per night range, but for some people (hello backpackers!) that would be considered an absurd splurge on the rooms (backpackers thrive on finding the cheapest accommodations they can find, like $7/night, and I remember being young and how that was an option, but I have to be comfortable these days).

To be honest you could get away with half that ($50/day budget) probably, and do okay if you didn't mind spartan hotel rooms and street food most of the time. I would say, not counting the cost of the air tickets, you could go armed with as little as $1200 and still have a nice time, though you'd have to be watching the money supply closely so as not to run out prematurely.
