Microban spray is a product that works for control small amounts of mold however in this instance I wouldn't touch a thing. Talk the landlord if you can because people shouldn't be living in that house for much longer until that roof is fixed.

Its not only cold attics being vented into either, the one I had to deal with was in palm springs, lol.

Yep that wonderful $500-$1600 shortcut someone takes that cost someone in the thousands and thousands. Got to love it. Although seeing some other peoples setups and how they run wiring of all things I can understand why landlords are so freaked half the time. I remember walking into to someones grow I knew and made him stop what he was doing and we went to depot to fix his half ass wiring so he wouldn't burn the fucking house down. Got to love the come check this out for 10 mins that turns into a can of worms.

Oh, for sure. I remodeled a house with a former attic grow. They had numerous banks of 20-30 sockets. No way 110 could service it all safely. This was also in a house with the original "knob and tube" aluminum wire and they just tied romex into it. F^ckin insanely stupid setup. I pulled three outlet banks melted in several places from small fires and they appeared to still be using them (the outlets were daisy chained). Morons, hehehe.

Is there some ungodly bonus to the house like it already has 2 service drops and panels in the basement or something that you can't just pass up? If not the landlord will have to fix it and pass an enviro inspection before I would every consider giving them a dollar. "I promise it will be fixed" fuck that. Just be forewarned. If the landlord does all this I bet your rent will go up by a couple hundred bucks before you move in. So consider that and if that is worth it to you vs a different place. Just like @Freshone said thts going to be a 10-20k plus job maybe more if that isnt the half of it.

Why the fuck do people vent into attics in cold climates. Fucking amateur hour.

straight up man..I dk why people do this but unfortunately there are some real bozo's who grow and give a bad name to those who know how to properly run indoor rooms. The place is pretty upgraded yes, 3 ton ac, extra panel, 2 flower rooms built out but ya...it's gonna be an expensive job if anything is to happen here, landlord wasn't to happy once I broke the news as ya'll can imagine but he was happy that someone came forward with the info.

Maybe you could speak with the landlord and see about getting the roof fixed but that looks like a big job to undertake. The mold doesn't look to be caused by growers to me but by a bad roof with completely saturated sheathing. How does it smell? Insulation soaked too? Is this the whole area or just where the ice dams form on your roof? That is potentially a massive job if all the trusses are shot too.

I spoke with the landlord a few days ago and he wants to get it fixed but I don't know if he really understands the severity of the issue, he wants to run an ozone generator, brush off the dead mold, and seal with an anti mold paint, but that's not gonna be the solution i don't think, may mask the problem temporarily...but not for long. The people in this thread have been extremely helpful in sharing their thoughts on the severity of the problem.

I found out that a grower around a year ago, was running all of his exhaust directly into the attic so that probably did the trick.

it doesn't smell at the moment, the insulation is not soaked or wet (**as of today that it, but its not cold right now, can report when i check on a colder day), the mold is heavier concentrated on ice dam areas but there are signs throughout the whole roof. For what it's worth, maybe 1/3 of the attic space is above the grow room, another 1/3 is over stair/hallway space and then the final 1/3 is over another bedroom across the hall from the grow room, I notice that the mold is basically equally concentrated in the space above the grow room as it is in the space above the bedroom. Not that that does much but it makes me wonder if the grow is what's causing the issue, potentially poor insulation above each room. certainly the venting into the attic would cause this sort of thing to happen but for it to be equally concentrated on two far ends of the attic and not as bad in the middle, makes me wonder a bit.

Wow this story is all too familiar, you dont happen to be in Colorado Springs, do you?

Same situation a couple friends of mine had. Landlords played dumb claimed they didnt know there was mold after their previous tenant told them over and over. Insurance company refused to pay for the mold removal when they noticed the rings on the basement floor from 7 gallon grow pots.

I would not live anywhere managed by landlords like that, period.

Then I understand where you are coming from. I mean if he is willing to actually do a full fix go for it. Just make sure it's 100% up to par before hand. Never listen to promises unless they are in writing and even then when the landlord knows you are growing they kind of have you by the balls. Best of luck with the situation.

I’d blame it on a leaky roof due to ice dams. He’ll be “brushing it off” til he sees shingles.

And advice if the roof gets replaced, double the ice shield to 6’.

Not in the Springs but I am in Colorado, sad to hear multiple stories of growers giving growers a bad rap essentially, I'm sure there are many other instances in this state of this happening. Just to update everyone on the situation, the Slumlord said he was going to have it professionally repaired and was no longer going to rent to growers so that sealed it for me. I'd be pretty surprised if he fixed it properly as everyone of his responses have been pretty lackluster and seem to dodge the direct issue, looking to Band aid the problem but it's out of sight out of mind for me at this point, best of luck to him.

Fortunately the tides have turned a bit for me and I am looking into buying a property with an unfinished basement space, grateful to be able to carry on doing this. Thanks to everyone for reading into all of this and providing insight of what may not have seemed like the best situation but in the end was the best option.

As a plumber I've seen my share of mold. Bleach will kill it but you need to fix the problem that's causing it.

not gonna waste my time perusing this thread, but if a little mold is gonna stop you from growing >bow out now/ otherwise get some gloves and bleach and some black garbage bags and get down on it
