I use ocean forest mixed with 25% perlite or a similar mix.

Never had as strong and fast growing plants in a nutrient free mix. Have to be very careful not to overwater the young roots is all. Drainage is key.
yeah I like to keep around 1/4 perlite to soil . Do you start your seeds right off in the ocean forrest mix ?

I prefer miraclegro seedling soil over jiffy. Happy Frog with mycorrhizae works too but i think the frog is happy about the free fungus gnats i got. Imo pot size and watering are more important to start healthy seedlings.

I just had some miracle gro soil that I used. Wasn't specifically for seedlings but doesn't hold as much moisture as I thought it would which is good.

it is , just wasn't sure if the little seedlings could handle starting off in nutrient based soil with perlite . got some pricey beans I'm gonna start , and I don't want to mess it up .
There are some soils that are hotter. But as long as you don’t add any additional nutrients to it you’ll be fine , fox farm bag soils are strong! I’m growing in an organic potting mix seedling through flower and everything seems to be fine

Then start them in a light seedling mix. Its an easy decision. I tried it before. It works. And it wont hurt them.

What do you suggest ? They don’t grow very fast in just the jiffy media .

2 to 1 perlite / vermiculite mix in 2 inch square pots in tray with 1/4 inch of water;

self-watering so no chance to overwater, also easy to start seeds this way too, use a heating mat for best results, good luck!

This stuff, fluffy without any time releasnutes
Tried the MG several years ago. Way too expensive. I use a standard potting mix, currently Kellogg patio plus sifted through a kids sand/beach toy.

I add about 25% composted horse manure and a tablespoon of Epson salt to a 5 gal bucket and works like a charm at a fraction of the price.

I didn't have any luck till I actually microwaved a damp peat mix then put about 3'' of that sterile on top the intended soil mix in coupla big solo cups .....& wet with distilled water..... Never took that ''sterile'' is important for starting serious before ............. Seein is believing ........... i'm a believer now . Guess if you don't have the damp off plague of my luck , might not be necessary. I also think i lost some to too hot a soil mix for ''starting'' . My theory is once the root gets past the 1st 3'' at the top of the cup, your germination is golden . Once they looked good I put'm in my amended soil........... My 1st success at birthin babies ........

Good luck

MG seedling soil is .03 .03 .03, its mainly sphagnum and perlite. At half a solo cup per seed i never considered the cost.
I'm popping hundreds of seeds per year from tomatoes to peppers to peas to sunflowers to too many more to list here. I bought 1/2 cu ft for $8 and it lasted me a month. I stock up on potting soil when it's on sale for 5 cu ft for $10. Besides, it takes some time to sift which means more garden time for me.
