I was an active member here about 5 years ago. I was running a DIY UC system using 25 gal commercial trash bins, with tons of vertical lighting (checkerboard layout), in a warehouse. That to say, I'm not a newbie, but I am considering something new; only because everyone says using higher quantities, running them quickly through a scrog setup of some sort. Ok, I get it, I know how, but.. I like growing big trees damnit.. Should there be a huge difference; if everything goes accordingly? Or are we talking 10%? Your thoughts please.. I just built an 8x16, slammed full of soundproofing rockwool insulation (R15) - double layer 1/2 sheetrock wrapped in panda. I have a brand new 2 ton mini-split, 8 Phantom 2 digis, and a TON of carbon filters.. I bought air cooled hoods for setting up the scrog, but, as time draws near, I have to make a decision. I have the environment for bare bulbs, the heat is no problem. What is your opinion on the subject?

The big difference you need to take into account is going to be nutes and veg time/ veg space/ veg lightning. With a SOG or SCROG setup you will be able to cram more plants/rooms into a smaller area. I'm not sure if that is going to matter . What kind of yield where you getting off that system with how many lights and in what area? I know you said not concerned about stats just would help to get an idea about what you are looking for. Need that to compare SCROG over something like 4x8's footprint with say 2 lights per table. 4lbs and up per table is pretty doable with short veg times on scrog. I'm able to pull that with old school SE digi's and no gas with 3-4 weeks veg time (315 - 600w per 4x4. 1 - 4x4 per 4x8 veg/flower. SOG can go even tighter) from rooted clone without trying too hard (strain dependent and by any means not maxed since I have ceiling height restriction and old equip). This is single 2 light 4x8's with no overlap separate rooms not a commercial spot.

As far as yield goes I doubt you will get anything near vert light tree growing in RDWC (kind of the king depending on how tweaked it was) unless you wanted to do something like Aero (the king). That comes with all sorts of problems in itself tho and very easy to lose plants. You will however have a different work flow which you might like better. It's more plants and depending on how you go at it more or less work. I will say with something like cleanup/flip is about as easy as it gets with SCROG or SOG if using wool. I'm talking I can chop a 4x8 and have it cleaned and loaded with new plants screened and ready 2 go in about 40 mins. I think we all hate cleaning about as much as trimming.

The other thing to consider is the footprint if you wanted to use 4x8's vs building something custom for a scrog/sog setup. 8 x 16 doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room for 4x8's. Me personally I fucking hate little room between tables and having to stretch across them all the time. Makes you do less work then you want to since its such a PITA. I'm a firm believer in 4x8 and think 1k's over 3x6 is a little bit of wasted space vs actual growing space vs lights used. I would use 3 x6's for stuff like 315's or 600's.

Hey cemchris - Just wanted to say thanks for the input, I am super beat. I am still finishing this building, as we speak. I'm kinda forced into answering my own question; here's why. I'm a month behind on this building. I've got 3 well trained girls that are over 3 months into veg. I'm going to give them each an overhead and drop verts on every side. Why not right. Sidenote; this is my first indoor soil grow. I moved to outdoor for a few years, so I have soil experience, just never indoors. Let's see what I pull off these 2-3 that I insta-flower in a few days once the room is complete, lol.. If I can pull 2+ each, I'm good.. I'm just being stubborn really.. I mean a billion dispensaries and pro grows ops cant be all doing it that way by luck, but again, if its 10%, who cares if I'm enjoying myself.. If I'm losing 25%, then I need to adapt my ways for sure. We all know what DS, CAP, DD, etc.. were doing with the rwdc,,,, can I get those 3,4,5 # numbers in soil? I mean 25+ gal pots, and 3-4k per plant with plenty of a/c, is it possible? So far I'm enjoying soil, guess I'm getting older.. Those UC systems were taxing, lol. I gotta crash, thanks again for your time..

And i see you are a long time member, so you should remember Desert Squirrel - aka Quantum9.. Michael Mays - huge CEO now of cannabis consultation co.. I called a few days ago, left message, no return call, yet, lol.. Google him though

Old Desert Squirrel from 09-11+ was out in palm springs CA and then Southern Colorado running RDWC CCh2o systems. I was growing with him for a while back then in both locations. Im sorry but hes not Micheal Mays.

Me personally I like the idea of sog. With the shorter veg times you can have more harvest per year. With a scrog you will need to veg till you have a full canopy. It could take two months. You could be half way through flower with a sog.
