Hello everybody, I'm growing weed in my garage gym and I think it's pretty neat. I'm a first timer and learning as I go so take it easy on me. I have a good friend who ran a farm in Redding and did probiotic living soil cultivation and I've had him semi-mentoring me and my wife as we grow our first crop. Not sure what all information to include here sooo...let me know if I'm missing important shit?

I didn't do everything by common advice, my goal with this grow wasn't to grow the best weed in the world with the most logically consistent plan etc. I wanted to get a crop under my belt and get some good experience before shelling out real cash on expensive genetics (which are extremely accessible in my area - socal)

Strains:
Skywalker OG (4)
Ghost Breath OG(4)
Black Berry Kush (2)
Forbidden Fruit (2)
Sour Diesel (2)
Fruity Pebbles (2)

I know what people say about not mixing strains in a grow, and I'm also aware that I'm probably growing more plants than I should in each of my containers. The cloner had a minimum purchase and I like even numbers so my intended 6-8 plant grow turned into a 16 plant grow.

Equipment:
2x EarthBox Probiotic Wellness Gardens
1x Timber Grow Light 4VS COB LED fixture (425w)
1x VivoSun 4'x4' Grow Tent
Fans and a swamp cooler and shit

I've used a lot of additional stuff to what came with the wellness gardens and I'm almost a month into my grow now so I didn't start it at the same time I started here but I'll try to pick a few progress photos that make sense and post them.

Well shit I'm on the wrong computer and I don't wanna re-write all this. Photos to come in a few.

By day 28 I had been letting them bush out like Playboy in the 70's but realized I probably needed to trim them way way back.

Day 28

So I smacked them ladies back a good bit, just started perking back up. At this point we're pretty much exactly one month in:

At this point the Skywalkers are pretty much crushing everything...well honestly everything is kinda crushing but the Skywalkers are standing above. This makes me happy because going into the grow that was the strain I'd most favored. The Black Berry Kushs' are the smallest by a good amount but my buddy grew a lot of them before and said they're characteristically squat but yield heavy. We'll see!

Looking spectacular. Stoked on my timbers which are being manufactured currently. Looks like those ladies love that light. Happy grows.

Hey thanks man! I love the Timbers, the 4VS is crushing veg in this 4x4, and I have the dimmer turned all the way down.

I actually doubled down on Timber and bought a trio (set of three) of their Daisy pendant lights at 3000k temp to supplement the 4VS in flower. Also super cool that they're local to my town so I've been able to pick up my shit the same day it's ready :p

So I've made some mistakes. I think I'll file these under "newbie ass lessons learned"

Lesson One - Heat, Photoperiod, light intensity and distance:

So after reading an article on light cycle in veg (https://themodern.farm/day-length-in-veg/) I decided to switch my plants from 18/6 to 24/0. The week I switched to 24/0 there was a heat wave and the plants started getting heat stressed which I interpreted as light burn (poss was a bit of both). So I pulled the lights up and turned them down and the plants seemed to thrive. Classic scenario of too many variables and too few controls - I left the lights that way thinking it was the only way to prevent light burn on 24/0 photoperiod and it resulted in some stretching which became apparent when I made my next mistake...

Lesson Two - Smacked them hoes all the way back (over trimming)

Then I went and read someone's guide on defoilating pre-flower (https://www.growweedeasy.com/nebulas-flowering-stage-defoliation-tutorial) and just trimmed the living shit out of my plants. This was exacerbated by the fact that I'm running too many plants so there's a lot of touching branches and shit I couldn't see until I started defoilating. As I went in on the sucker branches I ended up going a bit overboard and it became clear I hadn't been giving them enough light because the skywalkers are clearly stretched:

20200619 064928

Luckily after only three days they've bounced back remarkably:

20200622 114715

The mulch covers are lifted to dry out the topsoil a bit because of....

Lesson Three - FUCKING GNATS

This lesson is currently still under way. I'm being pwnd by gnats, feel free to follow along and have some enjoyment at the expense of my suffering on my other thread about it - https://www.thcfarmer.com/threads/my-fungus-gnats-dgaf-yo.114204/#post-2440417

Probably gonna flip this weekend. Decided I'm going to double up on the Corn SST to try and add some beefiness to the stalks. I'll be mixing that into an AACT I have brewing and I've given themback enough light to grow properly.

Thanks for anyone who's actually reading all this shit

Just seen this. Love the grow and yes I would flip asap.

In terms of the light just make changes slowly going to 24/0 will increase the DLI (daily light integral) so you did the right thing backing them off but maybe a little to much. None the less when you see stress this is a good first action to prevent more issues so even a bit of stretch is better than all sort of nutrient and other issues.

Good job so far. First grow is all about learning and stressing. Think of it like a first child. The second grow you know what to expect and get to spend more time enjoying and things don't seem so overwhelming.

Hey man thanks for taking the time to respond here! I def wanna flip I'm just hesitant because of the gnat issue. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on it now with some advice from the other thread so I feel better than it wont be a problem if I flip now.

Do you have any opinion on the 24 or 36 hours of darkness thing when flipping to flower, or do you just go 12/12 straight away?

Exactly what I purchased. The Trio. I like the flexibility to be able to move them where ever. I’ll be running a side by side with a Chinese quantum next run. Both around same wattage.

I used to be of the mindset just go 12/12 but I'm playing for the other team now. You will get conflicting opinions but I feel there will be a benefit of faster bud onset and will be doing so this grow.

Nice dude, I'll be interested to see how it works out! My trio is supposed to be ready a week from today and I'm about to flip so I'm stoked!

Cool, I had been leaning towards trying out 24 hours of dark just because of what little I do understand about how the plants signal the change to flower.

I did that this grow. A noticeable difference in the stretch. I didn’t see faster bud onset but I think this strain is going 9-10weeks.

Yep. Both 3500k
oh word - when you say side by side do you mean in the same tent/room or tents next to each other? My trio is at 3000k and my 4VS is 3500k but I'll be using them in the same tent. Just hanging extra lights for flowering
