Hi all,

Would love some direction or Insight from the forum.

I’m having a hard time finding the science of dabs/extracts. Does anyone know a resource that has information on each different extract types. I’m looking for things like viscosity, thixotropic index, flow rates, etc.

Thank you in advance for any information or direction you can provide.

stay safe!

I’ve found most info on this subject to very opinionated , loosely interpreted, and just a lot of confusing bs - my opinion is concentrates and extracts uses science but is almost an art form imo. The various techniques people use all seem to have their own little nuances
I press my flower into rosin- I can take the same flower and make different consistency/flavor based on heat-time-temp
Sorry not much help- what exactly are you trying?

Appreciate the reply.
what is there about 14 different types of extracts? Rosin, shatter, butter, etc.

i would assume each type at least has a range. Understand your comment about art form. Making it up but rosin is best between 90-95 degrees, that would then give it a viscosity of X.
hope that makes sense.
thanks again

I press at 190-220 each strain s little different quantity also affects technique-
When ur talkin Rosin that’s for sure a concentrate in my opinion - shatter/budder and others are very opinionated as most people base on consistency/viscosity as you mentioned - when actually these are extracts and should be named after the extraction technique not the final product consistency just all my opinion

There are many methods used to extract both solvent based and solvent-less based - although I do smoke some bho I prefer my solvent-less concentrates

I like to enjoy these Products although as you noticed. Definitely a newbie on the creation process.

Moshmen - understand your point on extract process not end product. Very helpful.

Canada - great info. Thank you temp ranges.

I save them and decarb for oils/edibles/tinctures -
I’ll add that I never double press a puck so most have trichs left in them - I’ve had people smoke em but no flavor/harsh/ and little buzz in mo

I press 190-195 always. Sometimes with larger producer will drop to 175F. I have been extracting for over 5 years. I produce my own ethanol and have done a variety of extractions including BHO, Rosin, Distillate, Full Spectrum, hash and dabbled in Diamonds and terp sauce, I dont have the time for it so I have a buddy who makes it for me. I am geared more towards rosins. I have a 30 ton 3200 watt custom built press with stainless steel plates. I run round plates so Flow Packing is not needed with parchment. There is nothing like fresh pressed rosin flavour and profile IMO.
Just curious what time and pressure you use at 190? I hardly ever run over 2 tons at about 2-3 minutes , are you using more pressure or time or both?

I don't think the type of info you want exists. And if it did, to be correct, would need lots of qualifiers.

I pretty much do them all except BHO and CO2. The plant makes a huge difference until you get into things like short path distillation or similar concentration methods. Pressing is hugely dependent on the amount of water in the bud, bud structure, temp, time and pressure.

I think you may find some rules of thumb, but any hard data on this would likely be misleading because it will be very hard to match conditions perfectly.

If you have specific questions, I may be able to help. I have a rotovap, short path, press, chromatography column, and lots of other fun things like vacuum oven and the like. I grow way more than I can use personally, so I've "wasted" pounds trying to dial in all my processes.
