Hey guys I need help. I'm on my 4th grow and have issues with drying my medicine and it smelling like hay. My medicine smells amazing before I cut to dry but once it starts drying it smells like hay.

I put it in large cardboard boxes because I have to turn over my tents for the next batch.

I know the slower the better and need to be around 60° and 50-55 rh. Hard to say exactly where my temp and rh is at but I keep it relatively cool in my home around 68° and my rh in my home is around 50-55. My wife grows carnivorous plants and the multiple hygrometers around the home keep those numbers pretty constant.

Any info will be much appreciated. I have a good crop that will be coming down in a few more weeks and want to avoid this hay smell and keep the fragrance of my medicine as it is while it's still alive.

Do you use any terpine enhancers?
My guess is you dry too quickly and too much. It’s supposed to be a slow process. In the dark the chlorophyll breaks down makes it better and sweeter. But if you dry it past the point you lose everything you worked for

Realistically should take 7-10 days to dry then jarred for the cure. Sometimes 3 months depending on the strain

Not sure what you mean about heroine enhancers. I use fish shit throughout my grow. That's suppose to enhance flavor and terps. But I'm at a loss at how it could be dried out quick. It's in a cardboard box which is dark. I'm on day 3 of dry and like I said it's in the 60s for temp and 50s for rh.

Terpine. It’s what gives your plant flavour and smell. Look at a product called terpinator there are a bunch of others

Will look into it. Is this something that is used at the end of flower? Or during? Or throughout the grow?

Temps a bit low. Below 60 slow growth. Rh ok for first half of flower but drop to 40 in final flowering for crystals buds. A lot of thing affect smell and flavour. Low dry temps for drying preferably dark. Hay smell = cut too early or dried too quickly

Maybe that's it. I did cut early because I needed to make room and genetics were kinda funky on it.

So where do you tthink I need to be at with temp? Id say I'm between 68-70

Its been a while since ive grown any, just now got back into it, but when I think back to my first grows I too suffered from your problem. And I also think I cut too early. Even though I had a small microscope to check trichs, I think that's all I was doing. I wasnt looking at the plant as a whole.

How many days are they usually drying in the conditions you speak of?

Well I'm trying to go for 10-14 days but it's at 3 now and it's super dry. But this plant was critical strain and was very larfy it never really got any dense flowers. I think I just grew a seed that had a bad genetic code. So because it wasn't the greatest plant and I needed to make room in my tent I pulled it. So not only was it pulled early it also didn't really have any dense flower to slow the drying process out.

So between what everyone is saying I believe those 2 factors are why it's dried out already even in the 68-72° temps and the 50-55 rh.

I just have some nice flowers that will be ready in 3-5 weeks and don't want what's coming down next to smell like this.

When are you experiencing the hay smell? A couple days after chop or after a few months in jars?

Fresh grass cutting/hay smell is common (and normal) right after harvest. It'll persist until a week or two into cure, and full terpene profiles won't return for at least a month. I don't like the idea of a cardboard box, there's no air circulation and you're asking for mold issues. Your temps are fine, not ideal, but fine.

This explains a lot. Early harvest means that a lot of the terpenes aren't going to be available. More volatile terpenes are present early in the flowering stage, and well, by nature of volatility, they evaporate quickly. If you have a space to dry that's cooler than inside your house, it'll help a little, but early bud is going to be grassy regardless.

I'm really open to suggestions. I have fans shoot I have a small computer like fan I could cut into the box just for some airflow of needed. I just don't really have anything else to use. I turn my tents over to have continous grows so can't really cut and leave in my tent.

Nah, I get that. Space is a premium, especially when trying to run perpetually. The idea of cardboard + wet flowers just begs mold issues to me. Hell, even drying in a bathroom would be better, a bit of a bitch having to move plants around every time you need to bathe, but at least it's not a stagnant air box. Given I don't know anything more about your living situation, my best advice is consider any other options you have. Personally, I don't dry in my tent either. I dry in my garage. Also not ideal temps, and not perfectly dark, but the bud turns out just fine regardless.
