Some people use potassium hydroxide and it's strong but not a really good buffer. It can also be hazardous and their Safety Data Sheets are hard to find. I've never found them and I looked.

Not much right now but if you want me to run some tests in the lab, I can try to help

Sodium bicarbonate is cheap. Potassium bicarbonate not so much. Much more than potassium carbonate

How much about the aspects of chemistry from a soil standpoint do ya know?I don't think I replied correctly to your question. Not much soil experience right now but if you would like me to run some tests in the lab, I can try to help.

Carbonate would be a good choice to use in with my nitrifying bacteria additions i do 2 to 4 weeks apart...they can chew through 7.1mg of alkalinity to gain 100 ions of ammonium....

Id like to find out how much alkalinity my plants are actually using in the soil....ill take that to the extension service. Can you do soil testing? Edit: plants dont use alkalinity..lol....how much the microbes are eating....

I hate over buffering by adding too much alkalinity to the soil from tbe over addition of lime....everyone in soil has probably dealt with this or does alot

Alkalinity testing is pretty simple but not super accurate. Unless there was a big change in the soil, the test my not see it. I'll see if we can improve the resolution.

Ive seen the Hanna colorimeter but not familiar with it. Do you calibrate it? If so, how. Is there a blank that you use for zero?

havent calibrated it yet. Used just 5 or 6 times to get down how much P acid i needed to lower my alkalinity to a certain point.
