So I see many many people dropping in and saying "1st time grower need help" and "I am using this, that, and the third," right? First off glad you popped in and welcome to the community and I hope I can help you in some way, but this got me thinking....

How many people, and this applies to every type of grower, be it soil, coco, or hydro, but soil growers in particular, took the time to actually grow a plant in the soil that they are using adding nothing to it but just water? Don't get it twisted, nutrients are a GOOD thing, mkay. My point being, you are adding products to your soil before you even know if it is what the plant does or does not need. We see all these descriptions of what people do, my water is ph'd to this and I use such and such fertilizer line, and I follow this or that schedule, and those things have a place and a time no doubt, but what's your why? I mean, you are a 1st time grower and I wonder have you asked yourself, why do I do this or that? Is it because it's what so and so told me I need. This is what so and so told me to do.

Why not just grow a plant from seed, in just your soil adding only water, to actually see when and what the plant needs? Take any store bought soil as an example, ocean forest, happy frog, roots organic, a test if you will, and try it with your freshly acquired fem seeds. Just one, before you grow the rest, to see this is what my plant does, this is when my plant does it, if I just add water to the soil. I'm not throwing shade at anyone, belittling, or even being arrogant or condescending. What I am asking though, and what you should be asking yourself, what I had to ask myself, what is my base line for using what I am using, the when and why I am using what I am using or doing what I am doing. Without that, the WEALTH of information on this site is just throwing darts, if you have no base line to start from.

You may being saying, I don't have time for that, gimme the grow hack, the secret formula Mr. Wizard. I got news, there is none in growing, there is only observation and trial and error. Do you have a base line though, a starting point, a place of nothing added but water, so the plant can tell you what it needs and when? You might be surprised.

I don't know, maybe just stoner rambling, and I got nothing but respect for anyone and everyone asking questions and making comments, maybe its the "give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats a life time" thing.

@freezeland2 Would definitely like to see your results. I'm interested in the results from this post because you will have multiple different opinions and reasons. personally, as a newbie I look at other successful growers for info trying to bypass some of the trial-and-error process. which may end up hurting growth as a grower in the long run. but it works right now for me. There are a lot of experienced growers and nutrient people that are willing to help in any way just like this forum. I think people get in trouble trying to recreate what they saw someone else doing and expecting same results and not want to take the time to actually learn about the plant and how the whole process works. in my experiences most people think all you have to do is have seeds, soil, some sunlight ,and water which is essentially right but not correct. roach from jungle boys once said growing shitty pot is easy growing good pot is a whole different level. it takes time and dedication. I feel this is truly an art and if your arent prepared to take the time to do it right and fail once or twice than be prepared to be let down. cheers to everyone have a great 2022!!!

I’m two weeks in to a new grow now. You can follow it here.

It’s super amazing how you can stick a plant outdoors, do virtually nothing and have massive plants.

Growing indoors is a whole different environment from an outdoor grow.

Symbiosis is very, very extensive and complicated outside in nature.

There are elements/animals/plants/fungi/microbes/insects/etc outdoors that work together to bring your plants what it needs. But you simply can’t bring dirt from outside inside to use in your grow as it would eff up your grow quick…. You COULD use the soil from outside, but you also have to bring the entire outdoor environment inside too, which is not possible. Our small, indoor, cut-off mono crops will need you to take care of them the whole way.

Soil that we grow in is sterile if it’s compared to outside dirt.

There is science (and proven bro science) behind the amounts of nutrients/factors they require. Plant specific. Strain dependent.

Same here and also have a bunch or plants @ about 2 weeks as well, it's my ~second run with water only organic soil, first was okay but I let the plants get messed up a bit. They never ran out of food though and this time I will not let them get messed up so I can see if the soil has enough for them when grown properly.

1 gallon final pot size. Electricity free fully automated 24/7 bottom feeding (wick irrigation, just fill res. when low, no timers or electronics), pH'ed water only. 12/12, kinda low watts (~200 in a 4x4 (probably helps not needing to 'replenish' the soil)).

All excellent points. I dig this thread, and talking about this kinda stuff.

To me, growing in a pot, indoors, water only, is an art based on science.

My only problem with it, is once you dial it in, it can get very boring, lol, in a good way i guess. At this point the plant just wants to be left alone, Literally.

So, to close, I bring the outdoor micros inside with fresh homeade worm castings or vmc. This goes to the op's point, and makes it easier to use less inputs. Fresh worm castings will quickly populate your pot with little worms doing all the work for you.

It does get boring. Humans have a need to help others. We need something to take care of. Shit is hardwired. Why so many growers “love their plants to death”

back in the early 00’s before all the crazy amount of advanced information and products, I relied on organic growing like a mofo. Didn’t make it to harvest before, but I really like the idea of adding living/dead material to my plants versus shaking a bottle of something that looks like windex or anti-freeze. 🥳

I like this as well. When I decided to start growing last July, everywhere I looked made it out like I needed 10 different bottles and a lab to do this. I tried and hated it, but finally found some people doing it much more simply to follow along with. It is a little boring, but it’s clear the plant is better at this than me haha gotta let her be.

It really is simple and the plant does all the work as long as you give it a comfy environment. They do seem to love your company though. Each time they don’t see me for a couple to three days, they always seem to be hating life. They bounce right back just by having you close to them.
