I need to keep my plants relatively short...

...so is it better/okay to use MH on them for the first week of 12/12 and then switch to HPS for the rest?

Or should I start and finish them under HPS?

Cheers muchly

You can flower under MH if ya want, it will work and the plants will be smellier due to the greater blue spectrum, but HPS works better. Using MH for the first week will not harm the plants but it probably won't make much difference to the stretch.

FF....if I can add something here...the very best way to keep them short without LST is to HAMMER them with light.

How many plants do you want/need to run in the tent? If you don't have to run lots of plants in a Sea of Green-type fashion, then you might try running a bare bulb with no reflector. You can loop the lampcord over something at the top of the tent and simply let it hang down in the very center. Then the plants will be placed around the bulb so that they encircle it. With a style like this, the plants are encouraged to bush out toward the bulb horizontally instead of shooting straight up. Then all you have to do is turn them once or twice a day during lights-on to keep everything even. Am I making any sense?

I have experimented quite a bit with this very same vertical lighting style that I'm describing to you and believe me IT WORKS WONDERS!

BTW.....a new space that I'm gonna be building is gonna be setup to use vertical lights. Whether you want to go this route or not is totally up to you. I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Well I actually keep the Mhal in until day 14 of flower.

Mostly cause I grow big stretchers and I really believe the Mhal helps to control stretch and up yield by creating smaller more squat plants.

I am going to start with the new sunpulse lights as of tomorrow.

I think I'll leave the MH in there for a week...i could do with any stretch reduction, if any...

i do this on a regular basis. im a big fan of mh, ive run them side by side with my hps and just always like it better. pro gro is totally right though. if you want them to stay short, keep them as close to your light as you deem safe. the closer you keep them to the light the shorter the internoding.....

I've always had better results from hps, though I can see where herb was saying it can be used as a means for stretch control.

you can easily use the mh for the first 2-3 weeks in flower..i do it regularly..put the light as close as you can without hurting/stressing your ladies..so it would be good to have an even canopy..after the main stretch from flipping stopped put in the hps for budding..
thats how i do it..:smoke

FF, Sometimes...Ill use the MH the last 10 days or when I start to flush, also cut the days to 13/12 or 14/11 you'll be surprised in the colors and flavors that will come out by doing this...Remember were trying to recreate the natural environment indoors, switching back to blue light and increasing the dark period simulates the fall...

yup this is true folks lotsa red, orange & purples when ya do this..to save on electric & be able to run triple crops ive been using only 6-8 hours on & 16-18 hrs off..buds still get big,not much difference really & this way i can run 3 seperate crops in diff areas at diff times without blowing fuses all the time..

awesome! people agree! been trying to tell folks about this for years. i try to get as many under my mh as possible, often times ill use smaller mh for side lighting, folks like colors these days.dunno why, they think it means its a little more chronic? got me. looks neat though! also seems to produce more nugs than airiness with sativa leaning strains.

That's v. cool - when I get a strain that has purplish tendencies I might just give that a go....

Well the wholesaler delivered the new sunpulse bulbs to me.

I have the 3K and 10K lamps. And they are all Metal Halides. This will be insteresting. I have swapped the bulb on the SSSDH for the 3k and I will run this until around 10 - 14 days befor chop, and replace with the 10K Bulb. State side there may even be a 25K lamp.

An option that I am surprised that hasn't been mentioned yet is the dual spectrum bulbs that are out on the market today, I'll attach a picture. These bulbs are pricey for sure, thinking I paid $190USD for mine. This is a 1k bulb producing 40%MH and 60% HPS.

duh..a bit pricey..i've seen cheaper hps bulbs with an increased blue spectrum..but i'm not sure if they are the same than the ones mentioned above..
btw..there's also mh bulbs that would run in a hps ballast..so you just have to change the bulb..

What I've been doing is put a 400w MH between 2 600w HPS throughout the entire flower period. The plants seem to like it:flower
