What are these purple hairs?

I'm growing a strain called Kush Mints. Flipped to flower a couple weeks ago, and now I've got these cute little button buds all over as the plants begin to flower. But I'm seeing something I've never seen before. For some reason, this strain is showing some very deep purple...what?...stigmas? No other strain I've grown has done this. The strain I'm growing right next to the Kush Mints isn't doing this. What am I looking at, here? Are these purple stigmas? Are they leaves? Have you ever seen this?

What do you think?

These are invisible to the naked eye, by the way. I took this with my iPhone camera, so please forgive the poor quality.

Looks more like a leaf structure than a stigma, to me. But I've never seen this before. It might have very interesting looking buds in a few weeks.

Yes, it's normal for Indica leaning strains. Reduce lights off temps to 60 deg and the color will become more pronounced.
Sorry I'm stupid, but I don't understand what "Reduce lights off temps to 60 deg" means. Do you mean to reduce the amount of light until the leaf temperature reads 60 degrees Fahrenheit? That would be really cold.

You can lower the temp for colors, Anthocyans (?)

but lower temps is also counterproductive to growth/yield

Back in the day growing on the hill, maybe one plant out of 100 would start throwing buds with translucent purple hairs. Then it was a rare thing. She would quickly become the darling of the garden and be looked after a little more closely than the rest. They were beautiful. But I didn’t notice any difference in the smoke but we always kept the purple ones for personal. Seemed to be a pretty random occurrence and rare. Maybe not so rare with the breeding nowadays.Maybe a recessive gene Surfacing, maybe the soil mix, we didn’t know back then. When we put a garden in we would get everything from squat Indicas To Lanky sativa’s to tie looking plants that wouldn’t even get close to finishing. It was kind of a crapshoot back then. Late 70s early 80s.

I remember the heady days of the late '70s grows. Just when sinsimella was becoming a "thing" (and before the word "thing" was a thing), and seed was coming from all over the world. You'd plant it all, and just wait to see what happened, because it was all so unpredictable. Sometimes you'd get fast flowering plants, sometimes they wouldn't flower at all or very late, sometimes you'd get trees, sometimes squat plants, sometimes wide leaf, sometimes narrow. There weren't so many strains, and what there were was simply named by source location: Thai, Panama Red, Oaxacan, Kush, Maui Wowie, etc. And none of it was anything like what we have today.

Good times. 😎 🥰

Yeah they were! In my experience back then skunk was more of a generic term and generally applied to anything grown in northern California. I still consider it a generic term because anytime I’ve gotten close to a Flowering garden to smell it, no matter what strain is growing in it, it still smells like a skunk. IMO.

You have 2 temps, Lights ON (day for the plant) and Lights OFF (Night for the plant). Ideal ON temps for weed are in the mid 70's. Strains vary some in exact temps. Ideal OFF temp is 60 degrees. This mimics the cooler months before winter and helps 'motivate' greater anthocyanin production. Anthro is the pigment in the plant. That's what makes blackberries black and strawberries red. Weed doesn't start showing colors until into flower usually, so it's an indicator the plant is getting close to being done.

You can bring them out early with lower temps. And the 60 degrees is far from too cold for the plant.

Thank you. I am learning so many conflicting things. I'm taking a 6 month Cannabis Agriculture and Horticulture course at the University of Wisconsin, and what I learned there (recently) is that ideally the temperature during flower should not swing more than 6-10 degrees over a 24-hour period. Indeed, they say it should be a narrower range than in veg. And so I try to keep day temps between 77-81 degrees, and night temps no lower than 75 degrees.

Now you tell me something completely different.

I suppose that nighttime temps for cannabis differ depending on the region. For landrace sativa plants grown in or near the tropics, I imagine that the temps really do stay within 5-10 degrees naturally. But for landrace Indicas that were grown at higher latitude, where they would have hot days and cool nights, the swing is probably pretty big. These days, with all the mixed genetics we have, I have no idea whether there's a rule on this or not, but UofW seems to have one and you seem to have another.

The more I learn, the more I discover I have to learn, and the more I learn that people don't always agree.

That said, it would be fun to have more colorful buds, so what do you think about me lowering the temps in the last 2-3 weeks of flower?

That is exactly the point of the color. If you want it to mimic nature as close as you can, or should, then you wait until the last two weeks of flower to start dropping the temps overnight to simulate fall.

Personally, I don't care if they are colorful or not, as long as they are healthy. This is not a rule for growing, it's just how it works. If you want to do it, it's your choice.
Weed has a wide variety of ways it can grow. Each one has its techniques designed to fit that grow style. Each style is done differently.

A friend of mine lives in Madison Wisconsin. He wanted to try growing in his backyard so I sent him some seeds. Things were going great and he was clam happy, Had them named and everything. When they got to about 3 feet tall, PM Blew him out of the water! Looks like somebody had dumped white paint on them. That ended his growing career. I still don’t think he’s gotten over it! L O L

Potency is from the trich's, not the anthro's. There should be no ill effects.
I wonder if cold temps have an impact on trichome development. I have no idea. So unless I do side-by-side grows, one warm and one cold, I guess I'll never know.

I've seen photos of super colorful colas, and always wondered how they got that way. Figured it couldn't be natural, with all the blues, and purples, and oranges, and pinks I've seen. But now I know! 😊

Not directly, no. But temps lower than 70 will slow growth if kept cold for too long. Colder temps are one of the stressors that cause the plant to produce more trichs.

Thank you, dear. Yes. growchoice is a pretty good light. I did the comparision as well. But its price is too high compared the other brands, like Mars. liteongrow. etc. They are with better price and great performance as per their data sheet. I don't know it is real. Sales told me, I could try, they ship from USA. Sounds not bad. They show me some pics.
