I'm in NY and we can grow weed now. Wanted to get something like a grow box that is discreet and can grow at least a pound. I see they have some that work with smart phones are these a gimmick or can someone grow high quality weed with them? Can someone recommend some brand named ones or lower priced ones that do the same as the high priced grow box

I am not familiar with the term "grow box," is this what you are referring to? If so I think it is crazy overpriced. What is your available size?

Are you opposed to setting up a grow tent yourself, and buying the supplies individually?

I think something like this is a much better deal, and this is actually a steal, because there is a $80 off once you hit that coupon button making it only $320!!! for a tent, brand name light, fans, etc..

Is this something you're looking for, or much bigger? if bigger than you should buy the parts separate most likely.

The pre-built cabinets are fools gold. Save you nothing. Offer no advantage. Just get a tent. A charcoal filter. Some fans. And get started. If you don't smoke much you can get away with a small one. But 4x4 and 5x5 are pretty standard sizes for use with most lights. A nice LED array and tent set up. Right around a 1000 bucks with everything in a premium trim.

VIVOSUN 2-in-1 Grow Tent, 48"x36"x72" High Reflective Mylar with Multi-Chamber and Floor Tray, 4x3 for Hydroponic Indoor Plant Growing https://a.co/d/a4Hj4x9

Something like this gives you a spot for mothers and clones and a finishing side.

This setup, take no offense, looks like utter garbage. IMO it's worth $200 not $1000. If you think that a "smart box" will eliminate any work from your end on maintaining plants, or making it easier, I don't see it. Once you start shopping around you will see that those parts don't cost that much separately, and that no one needs a voice activated grow room. Everything should be automated, not voice controlled. The lights, fan, exhaust, pumps, will either be constant or on a very cheap timer ($10-20) to make them automated.
That box looks like a millennial's pipe dream. It will cost a lot and still only produce the same as other setups that cost less than half of that.

IMO I would research/google Grow tent packages, look at what's included in the complete packages like the one listed above from another user.
If you can sacrifice 2x2 feet, maybe you can do 2x4' ?? I don't have a lot of room either, and I went with a 2x4 setup. I project over 1lb from the yield in my 2x4.

The other Con about that smart system is that everything seems locked in. In a grow tent you can upgrade your lighting, change from soil to hydro, trellis net, etc... modifications are easily available to accommodate your growing style.

I remember this thing from when I was a teenager, I saw something like this in High times and it became my growers pipe dream, that I never bought thankfully

How crazy is this? this was my young grower's pipe dream

Yes I'm in my 40s and my friend use to have a phototron but he never used it because someone stole it but it looked good and it looked like it can grow bud but I was like 16 or 17 at the time. I figured technology has improved so that these things were legit.

But I been asking around and nobody is really using them. I haven't seen anyone on forums praise them. I did check Amazon and I seen those so I guess I will get something like that.

Are there any models that specialize in keeping the smell down?

Yeah I want to make sure I buy the best parts now and not have to upgrade in the future.

Bingo, @Ponky's response is the one the OP should focus on. Personally, I would go larger but that's me and my preference. However that 3 x 4 is much more likely to yield a pound a grow than that little cabinet would. I'm not even sure that $800 cabinet could produce a pound, all grows combined, in a year!

The secret to growing good weed is quality equipment and some growing experience. On a positive note though, if you go the way Ponky suggested, you could have a very nice set-up for a whole lot less than $800.00.

P.S. if you're looking to automate, AC Infinity gear might be what you're looking for. It is a bit more expensive but it's also high quality gear.

If that is your aim then yes! It's so cool man. You get one of these carbon filters that connects to an inline air pump that will filter the exhausted air. I live in an apartment, so odors must be considered. I have a busting 2x4 tent, I have a carbon filter on it and I can't smell a thing. And IMO I might get a pound out of it, but it's just a hopeful prediction. This is my first grow. P.S. Don't mind the lower leaves, I defoliated right after this pic was taken. The point is that I have this much vegetation, and I can't smell a thing and I'm 2 feet away. Now, the minute you open the tent door is another story.
I did this whole setup for around $400. Intake and exhaust fan fyi, only exhaust has filter.

Or you can DIY yourself a nice little piece of furniture if you don't want an ugly tent in your space(you did mention discreet). Might require a little MacGyver skills and some effort but can be easily done - just needs passive intakes, an exhaust hole, LED, exhaust fan.

^ Is much more realistic and would likely meet your goals. It's a much better idea than those grow boxes.

I like to add the inkbird wifi temperature controller. Use the app. Let's you set everything on the phone.

I've got a couple of older tech Bayite Hi Lo temp switch controllers. You can really dial in the details temp-wise with them but they are older tech and at least the one I have doesn't connect to a smart phone.

Inkbirds are well known. It's good quality gear and might even cost less than the Bayite.

What are your limits in NY for recreational cultivation? How many plants can you grow?

I think it's a plant per person in the house hold. But who's going around checking? I don't have to much space so I'm going to try for at least a pound.
I've got Vivosun tents, and several carbon filter systems of various sizes. It's solid gear. The difference between it and AC Infinity is the automation they offer (for a higher cost) built right into a lot of their gear.
Ok so let me know the carbon system filters that are the best to get with the vivisun tents. I'm going to order everything this weekend. Do those AC infinity come with any stuff with them? Or do I need to buy the lights and stuff?

So it seems like I need a tent, lights, fans, dirt, and seeds and carbon filters. Am I missing anything? I'm scared the lights might got hot and burn things so please let me know which ones are the less dangerous. I would think the lights would be the most important, what brand of lights is good?

I’ve seen cabinets like this sold pre done with everything but they might be another of those pipe dreams ponky mentioned. I don’t remember the specifics of everything that came in them but they looked cool. I really wanted one at the time but it was expensive as hell. I’m sure dyi is much better route.

DYI is like 1/5 the price what they would charge. Anyone with some basic tools can easily build their own grow box :) Back in 2008 when I was still living in my parents house I used an old computer cardboard box and built myself a little 3'x2'x1' space. I made my own custom charcoal filter, and for ventilation I had computer case fans with thermo sensors, the grow light I was using was a 65w Hans panel and that was my very first grow. I think I got 60g out of that box my first try.

That dresser I posted brand new is like $200 I'm sure you could find a smacking deal on Facebook marketplace or Kijiji. Paint it flat white. Drill a 4 or 6" circular hole for your exhaust fan and then cut out some rectangular passive intakes that you can cover with some mesh material. I know you like my Mspaint skills:

Then you hang your light with some ratchet straps and some eye bolts to the "roof" along with the carbon filter & exhaust fan.
