Thank you for the post Madmax, I was thinking of vegging for roughly 5 weeks also. I do understand the value of a healthy rooting system and also am trying to figure out the best size pots that would allow watering to be as efficient as possible. I have been reading and see that many growers are only watering every other day. On my 1st run I water every day and the grow seems to be doing ok for the 1st try. I have also read on many site that is you water as often as I have been, there is a chance the rooting system doesn’t stretch as much because it isn’t searching for water and could stunt the size. So the biggest question is does the size of the pot and watering of that size pot make for a better grow in your experience? I do not mind watering every day as I am enjoying growing but would really like to maximize that entire process. I did and still do worry about over or under watering and would love tthao know the best way. I am growing in soil (roots organic). Thank you for the advice in advance.
Hi mate..oh your in soil.for a minute i thought you were in coco/perlite.sorry brother cant help you with that. I do have an experienced friend who waters every other day using pro mix hp under gavita 1700e led.has quite very informative and thorough grow diaries here which you could learn a great deal from..but sadly hes not on here anymore ..checkout sshz's grows under gavita 1700e.just type in the search bar and they should come up.im reasonbly sure hes running 3-4 gal pots..12plants vegged for 5 weeks in 4x4 room....huuges yields..

Schwifty, I would like to know more about soil as well. I by no means am stuck to growing in the roots organic. I actually have not bought the soil yet for my 2nd grow other than the little I had left from the first that I planted the seeds in. I did like it but there are only enough nutes in that coco based soil for roughly 10 days up to 21 but most sites I read they start adding nutes around day 10. What organic did you use by the way? Would love to use the best premade as I don’t want to mess with making my own at this time. Would rather purchase one already mixed by someone much smarter than me right now.

Also thank you on the advice on the pots and watering. Looking forward to learning more.
I’m in Mexico and just picked up this soil from a local Home Depot and seemed to work great for my plant. I’m personally going to give this one another go for my next run because I love how it holds the moisture. The only thing I add is a tobacco dust to the top soil every other feeding during veg and the first 3 weeks of flower. That helps with the nitrogen, ph balance and pests

Tobacco dust? I seem to be sleeping on that. Very interesting may have to steal that! I looked up all the “Super Soils” today and didn’t realize the market there is out for that. Wow…. But I did see one I am extremely interested in FoxFarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil. Seems like it is right up my alley. Kind of simple and I can still mess around a little with things like Tobacco dust and learn a little along the way. Then continue using Bio Bloom and then Top Max in the flowering stage. Am really happy with those 2 flowering nutrients. A little expensive but I like the results I am getting with those nutrients.

Update for the evening.

1st picture is of the girls.

My brothers 6 girls we have decided that we are going to give one girl another day before calling her finished. Not much more action on her today but she definitely isn’t dead. Maybe this is the evening she decides to take a little jump away from the soil finally. He has the other replacement Tut seed in a napkin, it has cracked but not a long enough tap root so he decided to let it stay as is and he will plant it tomorrow.

My 6 seem to be doing fine and look like they may start working on their set of 3 leaves by tomorrow. Looks like I can barely see them starting to form.

Pic 2 is what the tent looked like a few days before we decided to start this run sooner. Thought we would finish grow 1 and dry in the small tent and then start 2 in our 4x4’s but we got to excited and wanted to start with grow 2 in our 4x4’s with actual 2 week old plants. Trying to flip them sooner in our big tents and simply just go from the small to the big and the big to the small to dry. Sounds good again in theory, will let you know if it was a good idea here shortly. We do have a small backup plan in case they aren’t all ready the same day. It’s short term so let’s hope they are at least close to the same day. Anyways that’s what it looked like, I said we will slowly improve that tent over the next few months and we have started with a few small things. Notice the awesome big black surge protector on the floor in picture 3. Well as nice as it is it is taking up way to much floor space so I went with a thinner one as you can see in picture 4 and zip tied it down to where I think I like it but still am not finished so I do not want to trim the ends off the zip ties to make it look better. Tucked in a few cords, only have a few zip ties left so I haven’t zip tied the cords behind the tent poles yet, but cleaned it up some. Also cleaned up the lights ropes a little. Will completely switch those ropes out soon as I get to a store with some adjustable ropes.

Video - 1
The main growing tent, my small one will never be this nice but I would like it to be close to the first one by the spring. May do more with the 3x3 for future auto flowers and cloning.

The video shows my first grow and I know it isn’t the greatest but we sure are proud of our grows seeing how we knew absolutely nothing other than we wanted to try. Will get a video of my brothers this weekend when I go over his house. Well that wraps it up for the night. If you made it to the bottom of this then all I can say is wow.

Here’s from an article I have a PDF but can’t se to upload it but here’s a couple snippets. The only nutes I have is open sesame, beastie Bloomz and cha Ching from fox farms
I am so using it!!!! That is perfect, now for me to decide 4 or 5 gallon pots.

Nice! Make sure to stop adding any extra to the top soil 4 weeks minimum before you finish. Tobacco dust does have nicotine and will need a few weeks to filter out completely.

Today was the day for me to pull the trigger on some “super soil”. Went to my local hydroponics store and I walked out going a little different direction. Went with Sohum Living Soil (new to me), Roots Organic Terp Tea (also new to me) and Fish Shit, which I used last grow.

I do plan also on using my bio bloom and top max when I flip to flower.

The grow today is a little more of the same as they are growing well and trying to form some roots. My brother did get another seed prep’d because we were pretty sure there was no need to continue trying to make that other seed work. So he has decided to run a third different strain in this grow. So he will have 4 Tut’s, 1 Purple Ghost Candy, and One additional strain that he just purchased but the name escapes me right now. I will ask him again tomorrow though.

Did also include a pic of the plants looking like birds and a pic of bud from my first grow. They are starting to get a little fatter and some more trichomes.

Shutting it down for the night so hopefully soon we will show the first set of 3 leaves taking shape.

Today was a pretty simple day for the gardening. No water needed for the little girls as the soil is damp and they are looking pretty strong. 1st pic is of them. My brother has the additional 2 seeds planted and put them in his tent for the night and will bring them over tomorrow afternoon. I did not remember the name of the other strain he is going to grow yesterday so wanted to update on that one though. He has decided on a Purple Queen (also from Seedsman). Looks like a really nice smoke and I look forward to watching it grow over these next 3 or so months.

Taking advantage of the easy days because I know there is going to be some work to be done over the next 3 weeks as harvest is close and then setting up the young girls to transplant into their forever homes. Excited for the new soil and tea for this next run. Going to be fun!

So today my brother brought over his other 2 plants to replace the 2 that didn’t pop. We hope these 2 pop and then we can start watching these little ones grow for the next few weeks. Thinking about adding an additional 150 watt light in a week to give them all 300’watts to grow in prior transfer. Not positive about that but am contemplating it for sure. Want to get them as big as I can before the transplant and tent change. Still are looking to only have them in the big tents for roughly 3 maybe 4 weeks tops. Seeing if we can get the veg time total from pop to flip under 6 weeks was hoping for 5 but I do believe I am going to top twice. Looking to improve on my first grows canopy. This 1st grow was OK but I am sure I can do better. Especially with the additional 2 plants. Couple pics today 1 of the little girls and one of the big girls.

Today we can see the three leaves starting to form on a few of the little ones and I assume many more tomorrow. Now on day 8 so we have to get these other 2 to pop. Planted the 6th seed today for my brother and I sure hope it finds the surface by mid day tomorrow. Do not want to slow his flip time up an additional week. Would allow for me to double top though on the older ones as it stunts them for roughly 2-3 days from everything I read as well as my knowledge from my first grow. So not a bad thing,
Maybe decide to just top his last 2 once. Would put them closer to maturity level. He will have to make that decision when we get much further along the road. Looking forward to his choice.

1 pic today of the little ones, the older ones are ripening more every day.

Today I learned something cool. I will attach pictures as I was shocked but the cool new learn also came with a question.

So let’s set this up. I was deciding on how exactly should I start my new seeds I went solo cups just because they can get a nice root system before transplanting to their forever home. I also didn’t feel like having 12 plants in 1 gallon pots. To much soil and that isn’t what we are truly growing in. We popped them in Roots Organic, so we went with the solo size. I thought it would be cool to go with clear ones so I could learn a little about the rooting growth also. Well today is day 9 that most of them have been in the dirt. I noticed today that the plants may be 2”’s to tops 21/2”’s. The rooting system is all the way down the side of the solo cup and starting to go across the bottom. Very aggressive growth going on under the soil. Way more than the top. So the question comes in, don’t root not like light? So maybe I should cover them up in a red solo cup and I can just slide it off and look at it? Probably going to do that tomorrow as I think about it tonight.

Attached 3 pics.

1 of the little girls - all doing well and we should have the other 2 out tomorrow morning. They have some catching up to do. Will be roughly 8-10 days behind their sisters.

1 of the rooting systems forming at 8-9 days old.

1 of the big girls - really starting to see some color change in the trichomes. Maybe a few more days on a couple. Should be close to day 56 which is a pretty close to ripeness for some strains. Hopefully all go by day 65.

So today it looks like my brothers replacements seem to be popping out and look like tomorrow we should see some leaves. Only puts them about a week behind his others.

Also found 6 total red solo cups so I slid them over a few of the others and we will see if those grow faster than the others until I make it to the store. They are right on pace with my first grow as far as size and leaf structure.

The leaves of 5 are now starting to grow. Should be leaves of 7 by weeks end I hope.

1 - pic today

The little ones are doing well. They only need water every few days at this point. Hoping that when I transplant into the 5 gallon smart pots (fabric) that I will only have to feed them every 3 days or so.

Little ones are now fully into 5 leaves and are starting to root very well. 7 leaves for sure by weeks end. I am very excited to get these little ones into the big tents and their 5 gallon pots. Should be soon as the flowering plants are in day 57. When I looped them today the trichomes really are getting cloudy. Looks like a couple plants may get harvested by day 60 which is Sunday the 11th.

2 pics

1 of the little ones. Really are performing well in the 3x3.

1 of a bud off of my Red Hot Cookies plant. Trichomes are covering the plants pretty well.
