Hello everyone.
I was wondering if there was a way to put my plants into flower to identify makes and females and then go back to veg. I grew 8 from seed. There are about half tall and half short. Still youngins . I want one male but I have no idea what they are. So I wanna keep all females and one male and I need to figure this out so I'm not wasting my time and energy on more than one male.
Thanks again for quick replies!

When you put your plants into flower and then revert back to veg, it will change your plants normal growing regimen. plus the time it takes for them to turn and so on.
Then you risk them to disease and what not, plus loss of the original vigor. I would think that would effect your seed quality output. not advisable!!!

Most strains will usually pre flower if grown for at least 8 weeks. they will mature and start showing sex. some are very obvious some not. The male (imo) seems to always grow taller and the stem will be stockier...not always, cause you can get females that will show short and squat and others will grow tall. also cosider the strain too. And you also can get males that just look killer and stink...it stands out...thats the dick you want.
You can also cut some clones and put them on 12/12 right off, have them labeled.
they should show if you can keep them alive.
and growing out any of them is not a waist if you can compare and find your best stud.
best of luck

Cover a individual branch each night with some grow plastic or trash bag. Something light tight. This should help you out a bit. Rubber band the plastic around the branch

Also blue light and cooler temps as well as properly watered plants make for more females as to red light hotter temps and water drenched soil with make for more males

Good luck :)

Bollocks! Go right ahead with your idea for sexing them - its a well established accepted method of sexing. As soon as the sex shows itself, go back to veg lighting. Its not going to hurt them. This talk of confusing the plant and causing some kind of some kind of bad dominoe effect is way overblown - must come from reading too much Ed Rosenthal.

Do not listen to this dudes. Weeks to show sex weeks to revert. What a waste of time.

Take a cut and flower it or cover a branch. Simple as that

Weeks? Nah
Put it back to 24hr lighting after it shows the first hairs. Dont wait long is the secret
it'll go back to veg mode with hardly a hiccup.
It might push a few more hairs at the most but its not like its going to flower in any big way. Its going to keep growing during that transition back to full veg and that new growth is going to be mostly veg. with perhaps some single digit leaves but it reverts quick. Not even close to what a full reveg from a mature flowering plant would entail. Just be sure to flip back to 24 hr veg as soon as the sex shows.

I do a similar technique where I take a cut off of a plant that has been flowering a couple weeks.or less. The cut takes and reveges pretty quick.
I do this because it helps keep my plant count down.

youre not going to gain a whole lot of time anyway with this technique because a small seedling takes longer to force sex than a more mature plant which would likely be showing it sex already anyway. Unless time/space are really tight or you have a large seed run to plow thru, its probably not worthwhile to do it.

The first part is an ingenious idea.

The second part is not true, however. Light and temp will not affect the sex of the plant (except in cases where it hermies due to stress).

The seed is already a girl or boy before you pop it--no amount of blue light or cool temps will turn a male into a female.

This is what I do. I take a cut as soon as one is available from the plant I'm looking to sex. I let it grow to maybe 8-12 inches and then flower it.

This allows me to do a few things:

1. Sex the plant

2. I can start dialing in the strain and seeing how it likes my medium for flowering and other stuff like that, before I actually risk the main plant.

3. Obviously I get a nice sample of the bud before the main one is done flowering--and I can see if I want to alter how long I let it finish, how long I flush it, etc.

There is some truth to the fact that you can help you seedling turn female, it has to do with light spectrum, your light regimen 18 on/6 off deal, your temps and so on. do some reading.

I think a nice cut would be a good idea. I could take one from each plant. Some of them are showing long white hairs. Only a slight few.
