How to build a self watering clone Stealth box

Create the perfect environment for your plant clones with this stealthy clone grow box. This guide will walk you through the steps to assemble a self-watering, well-lit, and air-circulated grow box that allows you to leave your clones unattended for extended periods.

Introduction

The stealth box is designed with a large plastic toolbox as its base, providing space for approximately 30 clones in jiffy pots. It is essential to use a non-recycled plastic toolbox, as recycled plastic can release chemicals that harm the plants. Note that some light may be visible through the lid opening.

Assembling the Stealth Box

Required Materials

  • 1 large (hinged) plastic toolbox (non-recycled plastic)
  • 1 2ft double fluorescent light (with self-contained ballast)
  • 1 2m length of 1.5mm 3 core cable
  • 1 13a male plug with a 5amp fuse fitted
  • 1 TRS gland (a rubber grommet to hold the cable)

Assembly Process

  1. Remove the lid from the toolbox.
  2. Place the fluorescent light fixture in the center of the overturned lid, and mark its outline.
  3. Cut any plastic ridges the fixture touches to allow it to countersink into the lid.
  4. Secure the fixture to the lid using bolts or superglue.
  5. Drill a 20mm hole in one end of the box lid for the power cable inlet.
  6. Fit the TRS gland into the hole, and slide the power cable through the gland into the light fixture.

Wiring the Ballast and Plug

Wiring Process

  1. Strip the ends of the cable.
  2. Connect the Red/Brown wire to the "L" marked terminal on the ballast.
  3. Connect the Blue/Black wire to the "N" marked terminal.
  4. Connect the Green/Yellow wire to the "E" marked terminal.
  5. Wire up a male plug onto the other end of the power cord, matching the colors to the appropriate terminals.

Using the Stealth Box

Operation Instructions

  1. Place clones in jiffy pots inside the box and water the soil.
  2. Turn on the light and close the box.

Important Tips

  • Check the clones only once a day to maintain the desired environment.
  • The fluorescent light creates a convection that warms the air, drawing fresh cool air through the lid opening.
  • Humidity averages between 54% - 68%, and the temperature is around 74°F, depending on external conditions.
