It needs COLD temps. In the 50's. I was JUST writing about this very thing to a friend of mine online here !

In the northern sacramento valley, just shy of mt shasta I harvested a beautifully stinky and stony GDP plant that I called "Granddaddy Hashplant" because it was totally green. Left some on the stalk for another week and when the cold snap hit, it started turning purple from the outside in.

The smell and flavor are the rarest purple incense however, approaching PI but fruitier. I always dissed this weed but apparently what I had smoked before was mendo purple or erkle because they tasted like shit and my GDP is a flavor bomb.

I tried some Kens GDP I purchased from BC and had shipped to me in Ontario. That was some of the tastiest and prettiest buds with lots of purple, and it was incredibly rich and really helped medically with my chronic pain levels.

ken's grandaddy is the real grandaddy.. everything else is just taining the name... the most amazing flavor ever.. best body buzz for pain relief.. ive researched gdp as it is my favorite strain and ken gdp is (i believe) Purple Urkle x Salmon Creek's Big Bud.. i have the genetics and it grows very similiar to urkle.. except more aggressive and 3x 4x the yield.. gdp fixes all the problems that urkle has..

GDP is hard to find info on. Its suppose to erkleXbigbud. Ive heard kens is the orginal and others are copys. I have no clue, Ive read theres maybe 2-3 different cuts. I have 1 GDP totally untested from a local club. I have kens that was just gifted from me 2nd hand from possibly ken.Im at 6-7 weeks in and its the dankest looking plant and has started to turned purple on its own with temps 70-80.Rock hard buds even way down low. My budy has another cut thats different than the kens in veg, and ive smoked and seen that bud and its no joke GDP. We will see what they look like soon Ill get all 3 cuts together and run the best.

nice pics purple berry. you should take some more if you have time. maybe some whole plant shots, some in veg whatever so people can see the stages of growth and know if they got the cut or not

Nice plant purpsberry. I can almost smell the fucker.

The whole Cali purple strain lineage is all fucked up. Ive seen countless samples of grapey purple weed all of which smells and looks somewhat similar yet somehow they all have different names. Shit I've probably heard of 15-20 different names for the same strain. In all of the legit samples Ive seen I would say there was two maybe 3 different phenotypes. Cali's purple is pretty much just 2-3 phenos that at one point or another share names. What GDP is to one person is Urkel to another and Royal Grapes to another. For this reason, I have pretty much given up trying to identify each strain. To me it all just Cali purple.

I can't vouch whether or not Ken's GDP is separate from the gene pool that I speak about above however it seems likely that its not.

As far as purpling goes I've experienced that if you run it longer than the point when all the hairs are orange and it looks done, it will turn really pruple. In fact I've seen urkel turn almost solid purps during summer with low temps of like 70 just because it was ran so long.

While cold temps do probably help trigger the purpling Maturity plays a large factor. Especially with this strain.

DD, there is way more purple cuts than 2-3 in CA. Maybe some can be grouped as very similar. I have atleast 5 that are very different GDP, Querkle, Mendo, Magic merlin, Purple wreck, ect. Thats like saying all red apple are the same people just give them different names. There a reason farmers pic one red apple over another, same can be said for purple strains.
So far the GDP cut I have is the best, I have a few more to test out, but I really dont see anything beating it, except for maybe yeild, but I can work with that. Im thinking of trying to self it and run it from seed if comes out the same, I should get something more from a seed grow.

Hey Purpleberry,

Is that an authentic Ken's cut that you are growing? Do you know if it is authentic? The reason why I am asking is because I have some unasked questions about the strain. In example, best temp, humid, flower time and etc. One big question I have is regarding pests and bugs. What kind of pest or bugs have you encounter with this particular cutting?

Thanks.
Tone.

888 im pretty sure its the real cut. Ive only ran 1 plant so I cant really say about the fert, ect. I will say its easy to grow, i had other plants on the same run get yellow burnt leaves and the kens didnt skip a beat. I also got powdery mildew and I sprayed it 1 time and it went away, the other plants it came back 2-3 times i had to spray them. Part of the reason it will hard to beat is it seems so easy grow from mother to harvest. The hard part is getting the cut lol, Ive wanted it for a few years and now its getting my full attention :)

In my post I was mainly referring to original purples; Grape Ape, GDP, and Urkel

I've never grown any of those cuts but I'd bet they are all just crosses of the above with other various males and herms.

The reason I said "pretty much" is because not many people grow those strains. The majority grow those 3 phenos all call them all different shit.

Ill bet there are over 100 people with that same cut of GDP that you have that they call urkel, or even grape ape.

Kens granddaddy purple

My buddy got this cut at one of the clubs, as PK, but its kens, the erkel is the purple cut most everybody used to cross there stuff with, the erkel is a low yeilding very potent strain, Ive been running the urkel sence 03, but shit canned it a couple yrs ago, to much veg time and to low of yeild, if u let it cure long enough the grape smell will turn into a very sweet wine smell. My temps got down too 55 degrees with lights out, and 45 degrees for 2 days of dark period. DoubleDub, purdy much nailed it, with what he said.

Sooo tastey growmaster! Beautiful pics!

kens is the original...

Hmmm... I highly doubt this. If ken's cut was the original purple cut then he would know the heritage of the plant. He would be the one who made the cross and the origins of purple wouldn't be a mystery. While ken's cut is argueably the best cut by no means do I think it's the original.

Now I have heard that the original purple strains in Cali are in fact purple phenos of lavender by Soma seeds. I've never grown his lavender but it's not a far fetched theory. Some pics of lavender look strikingly similar to the ones above. Also I forget where but I read a post by soma that hinted that his genetics where all over Cali. Who knows... Maybe someone on here has grown both the clones from Cali and the seeds from soma, do they resemble each other at all?
