You are correct, no reason to pull fresh air if you are running a closed system. The air in your room will be constantly circulated by your AC. Apparently air does not get stale so you just need to replenish your co2. (which I am sure you already know if you are doing a closed system.)

If you have an intake with no exhaust you will create positive pressure in your room, this of course will cause problems with smell.

More than likely it is a defective solenoid, it is a problem with CAP CO2 generators. They are aware of this, but have not decided to recall their burners yet.

The portable AC from NGW says "not 100% airtight" and the portable from hydrofarm says "This unit does not contain a sealed compressor and a small amount of room air will be exchanged through the exhaust port." So unless they were getting their portables from other sources those two clearly...
