Hello THC Farmers!

First post, first grow, and I am so excited! I am 7 weeks and 5 days in with growing and flipped to 12/12 on June 10th. Almost at week 3 of flower from 12/12 flip.

For my first grow, I did a lot of non-stop reading from grow sites, forums, and blogs and from all that info, I chose to grow in coco with coco canna a+b with calmag for nutes for a more hands on learning experience. For all the equipment, I put together a 4'x2'x6' PVC tent with panda film, had two 2' t5 lights, upgraded to 3 300w LEDs from eBay (with one more possibly coming in making it 3 - 300w led lights from meizhi and 1 from viparspectra all bought cheap on eBay), exhaust fan, 2 fans for air circulation and some twine and cord to tie it all up.

My exhaust fan is spray foamed, in a box, and wrapped with clothing and bubble wrap to reduce the noise and it really helped. Now it sounds like a smooth box fan I guess? Attached a pic of what it looks like accompanied by photos from sprout. Canna a+b nutes spilled from the top of the closet shelf I initially started in and the seed, og kush supposedly, that was free from the unknown seed bank my friend got these seeds from, seemed to have gotten a taste of the nutes and turned yellow as you can see from the pic. One white widdow still had its shell on so i eventually had to pry it off to give it the help it needed. I dripped water on the seed shell to moisten and soften it before I went in with some picks. These were my intial problems and so I flushed the plants with water to combat the possible nutrient contamination and freed the sprout from it's seed shell. Will be adding more to this grow diary up until I harvest hopefully.

More pictures!

May 5th was when all the seeds sprouted
And I started feeding nutes at reduced strength. I forgot to mention I am growing in 3 gallon smart pots. I started in the 3 gallon and decided against the solo cup route of transplanting. Germinated in wet paper towels on top of a warm PS4.

May 9th I got 2 meizhi 300w led grow lights soon to be accompanied by another 300w viparspectra in the future. Plants grew very nicely!

May 12th marked week 2 of my grow and it's when I started everyday feeding. I noticed the white widows were leaning on themselves so I stuck a chopstick in the coco to straighten them out. I'm thinking it must have been when I was running only 2 - 2' t5's during sprout which led to stretching? Either way I eventually should have taken the chopsticks out sooner than later because they got white mold on them early on in veg. Growers must be using bamboo stalks for a reason for support. After removing the chopsticks, I didn't see any mold issues on the plants. I spritzed some water and vinegar on the top of my medium in hopes of combating any possible future issues with mold.

May 21st started LST. My plan for lst was to tie the plant down so it circles around the pot. Temps in new New England have been keeping my tent at 80 degrees and humidity of 60%. I hope to improve my LST for future grows.

Fun fact, I have been using vinegar this entire grow for pH down eventually switching to Apple cider vinegar. I am also in 100% Coco coir from the bricks. I have a local grow shop that pointed me in a good directions for coco bricks that don't need to be flushed when intually hydrating. On June 3rd, I screwed up defoliating by trying to pinch off a fan leaf when it was actually a node growing beneath the canopy. I was a bit high so to fix the mistake, I took duct tape and taped it up in hopes of it healing as can be seen in the pics. I thought of pinching it off completely and maybe taking a a clone but I wanted to wait and see what happens since it was my fridt time.

The pot that I believe is the free seed of OG Kush is the bushiest of the pots followed by the white widow that I accidentally tried to pinch a node off of, with the helmet head white widow as the smallest looking pot of the trio. This is towards the end of May up until I flip 12/12 lightcycle on june 10th. I was worried that I was doing lst completely wrong since the pots were looking cragely but I kept at it.

Time to flip so I went 12/12 light cycle, bumped my nutes up a little bit, added a trestle net from home Depot that has huge 5" gaps...for scrog, moved my lights down 18" from the canopy, and added another cheap 300w viparspectra led to mix in with my 2 other meizhi 300w LEDs. Defoliated for the first few days of 12/12 and will defoliate again at the start of week 3 flower for the last time. Started tucking everything at net level.

The formerly helmet head white widow in the middle seems to be catching up to the other white widow on the left. Og kush on the right has been going strong.

Netting with 2.5” squares is ideal and easily makable. You are not running 600w. Each of those only pull 139w max. Everything looks great but when it comes time to flower you will be very disappointed

Yeah I knew this going into the grow about the limitations of leds. I have limitations when it comes to this first grow because of time and budget but the opportunity was right so I plunged into the world of growing cannabis with a budget and a plan. That plan was to use many cheap lights that I can afford now and see what I get and hope they last for future vegatative growing. I ideally want diy LEDs people are putting together which exceeded my light budget and time restriction. This first grow gives me time to sort through what I want to do next really and what my next approach will be.

I wish I would have topped these plants. I had a tight schedule for this grow so I was worried about the topping slowing growth down too much but from what I've seen from other journals, topping looks amazing and I can't wait to try it for my next grow. Did more tucking throughout the week and feed has increased from 1 to 2 gallons in total.

OG kush is thirstier than the white widows. The white widow with a formerly pinched node is in a little less than 3 gallons of coco because of bad planning which may explain why I'm feeding the helmet head white widow which has more coco medium a little more than the other. I've pretty much been tucking and watering for the past 2 weeks of flower and growth has been looking nice. At the end of this week, my grow journal will be caught up!

The weather has been very hot the past week in the 90's so I had to keep an eye on my temps and humidity. Today however is very cool weather and I will be adding another cheap "300w" led by meizhi that just came in the mail.

Don’t doubt yourself, you didn’t need to top, you did a great job with the LST, def wanna get those temps lower, and that humidity you gotta get to 35-40 percent. I myself am from and live in New England so humidity is a constant battle, especially when it rains here.

Thanks. Yeah I'm worried about humidity. Going to need small dehumidifiers or something. I might try lining my grow tent with charcoal in hopes it drops my humidity by a few % maybe accompanied with damprid. Can't shell out on a dehumidifier since I'm still on a budget. Combating humidity has been on my mind for the past month along with worries of heat waves. Have you been growing for a while now?

This update catches this journal up to present day. So what has happened recently is that I snapped a cola while tucking under my scrog! I didn't notice how Woody and inflexible it had become and I may be a bit too rough with the plants. I put some white duct tape around it in hopes that it heals as can be seen in the pics. Will be defoliating for the last time today.

Dude I got a 4x8 tent up in Manchester on Craigslist for 100 bucks what a steal. If you’re willing to drive you can get shit for a steal from people who either can’t grow or upgraded or don’t need the equipment. Search inline fans, 6” cfm. I bet you can get one for 50 bucks, that’s well worth the investment

So tempting! Moving at the end of this grow to a smaller place so there's a bit of uncertainty of what I can fit into the smaller new place without being cramped in there since I'm in Boston... If only I had the space for a 4x8 because im already feeling cramped in there with the 4x2. Hope they sell soon! Hoping to hit that 3 year mark myself.
