Would anyone know: when using an air stone for aeration, must it be on 24 hours a day? Or is it safe for the roots if the pump were timed to come on in intervals, i.e. 3 or 4 times a day?

To my understanding the key is the keep the water from becoming stagnant. I can see this working, but I need more opinions.

good to leave the air pump on all the time less electric bill is really a problem. What your doing is introducing oxygen into the solution. This helps the roots system "breath". yes keeps your rez from being stagnant but a small water pump will circulate better for that purpose. IMO .5 cfm of air for every 10 gal of rez but I am sure there is a real ratio.

Well I was wondering if the idea was feasible. Elec is not a problem but the idea of keeping cost down is always welcome. I see your point though. Those fine root hairs constantly require oxygen. I'm going to search around for that equation too. Thanks for your chime.
