No really. Burrowing insects leave a little bubble of their excrement behind at the location they enter at. Usually they're headed for a stalk.

There's many locations. If it's a bug, it's an infestation of only one plant.

How will it affect the smoke? The article posted said its basically sugar water so it's unsmokable. I wonder if that means as is or take it out

i really hate to say this, but my plum tree gets that and it's some sort of boring insect or fungus.
i hope i'm wrong

i would, but even if you can't see anything with a loupe i'd be pretty leery of ingesting it in any way shape or form.
