first time grower here. right before the first transplant i noticed a bit of a deficiency but figured the fertilizer was running out, so i thought maybe tranplanting would be an easy fix. now its 4 days after tranplanting and the browing and curling are spreading fast.

im in a 3x3 ac infinity grow set, fox farms living soil, and gaia green worm castings and fertilizer. if youre wondering why the pot is so big, i had to transplant to 3gal bc i bought the wrong size pots.

im not able to get cal/mag atm, but i did crush up eggshells yesterday and added the powder to both pots (only 1 plant is experiencing this deficiency but just wanted to be safe) im really not sure what im doing wrong and im not sure if i should remove the dying leaves.

sorry if this is a bit confusing

The egg shells wont break down in time to do that much good. I'm thinking its some type of lockout, have you checked your soil PH (or runoff). What PH are you feeding at?

My first few grows looked a bit like this--- it was due to the fact that I wasnt watching PH and PPM in the feed/ runoff. (I had salt buildup, bad PH and my feed was way too strong. )The good news? I dont think your plant looks that bad , the top leaves look ok, the bottom leaves are temporary anyway. (at least for me)... I think this one wont be tough to fix.

I was new and kinda ignored the PH and PPM thing. Bad plan ! Its very helpful to be able to test PH ( PH very important) and PPM ( not as important, but very helpful).... Otherwise you'll be chasing your tail adding nutrients that your plant cant use.

Last thing, if your on the east coast buying Fox Farm Ocean Forest, I'd warn agaInst. My first few grows were in FFOF and nothing I did could fix them. Moving to Happy Frog was MUCH better for me. Not sure why I had so many problems with ocean forest, but my plants looked just like yours.

thank you so much! i actually checked and i dont know where i got fox farms from, because my soil is actually happy frog. i think i was thinking about purchasing fox farms and thought i went with that. so we’re good on that front. i have been watching the ph of the water (its been at 6.5 - 7) and i do have a soil ph meter but no batteries atm (didnt realize it would need them)

when researching calcium deficiencies, i did come across somewhere saying that filtered water could be deprining the plant of nutrients and ive been using filtered water, so im going to just use the tap and my airstones from now on. again very thankful for the tips!!

Yep ! This is why PPM meters are useful as you'll know if your water is hard or soft etc... Not expensive for a PPM meter, around 12 bucks. (not curtting edge but gives me clues that I need--it gets me in the ballpark.)...

Fox Farm Happy Frog (or some call it happy gnat) is great stuff if you ask me. Just boil it or cook it first as all of mine has been loaded with fungus gnats.. Do you have any flying insects? Also needs a good addition of Perlite as it can get bogged down with water, I'd water it lightly---watering to runoff early veg with Happy Frog choked my plants.. (without perlite)...As the plant matured and drank more, I could water more heavily to runoff.

Lastly, really let that soil dry out before watering. My plants went nuts and grew great with less water and some dry spells. They choked and slowed down with too much water. (My biggest complaint with this soil, it can get overly saturated) I used a scale to weigh my Happy Frog wet and dry, it took 6 days early veg (after flushing) to dry out. Not good ! At least I knew not to add more water...

ive not seen any flying insects luckily. i have been watering when dry, like ill give it a enough to where the top is fully saturated and it dries out in about a day and a half. i was going to get perlite but wasnt sure if it was needed in living soil. ill look up how to prepare the soil like you said and get a ppm when i can.

You might be surprised to find that your soil isnt as dry as you think. let is go 1 or 2 more days before watering. Weed LOVES the dry spells..

If you can, weigh the soil dry and weigh it after watering, you'll see what I mean. That soil early veg will hold water a lot loger than you think even in a cloth pot.

Lastly, your plant will let you know when its thirsty and little damage will be done (compared to over watering)... This will let you know when its time to water. I'd say 3 or more days in between waterings with your plant in its current setup.

And the pot will be VERY light weight wise when its time to water... After watering it will feel like its full of lead.

Here is a Durban Poison in Happy Frog very similar setup to you...(watered lightly)

Looks like Phosphorus deficiency to me.

Calcium deficiency is small brown dots usually along the veins of the leaves.

Did you add any organic amendments like Crab meal, bat or Seabird Guano or a mix like Dr Earth Tomato and Veg Herb and Bud and Bloom?

Also you should mix 3/4 cup dolomite lime in the soil before transplant or you'll have to use like 5ml of Calmag every week when you feed

Your lower leaves look like bronze purplish.

Might be the light and camera flash but this was a very healthy grow for my 2nd try. I was using happy frog and had pretty good luck as a newbie. I've come a long way sinse then but thought this was a good pic considering I was using the same soil as the OP. My only complaint with Happy Frog out of the bag is the way it drains and holds water. For me, if I water to runoff it holds way too much water and chokes the plant. If I water lightly without runoff, salts build up and a flush is needed, which again over soaks the soil and chokes the plant. The picture is a plant in Happy Frog watered very lightly and allowed to thouroughly dry before watering again, sometimes 4 days or more. Yes, I made mistakes, but over watering was not one of them.

I used Happy Frog again for two more grows and added a lot of perlite, but I still feel it doesnt drain as well as it could. I've moved on to Coco Loco for my current grow. (which very well may be Coco mixed with Happy Frog.)_

most filters wouldnt remove calcium as far as I know
ro being an obvious exception

I bought Happy Frog for growing seedlings. It's not really nutrient rich. Their Ocean Forest soil is hot loaded with nutes. Not really good for seedlings.

Other issues I have with it is calcium deficiency because I keep forgetting to add 1 cup of Dolomite Lime to the bag and mix it up. In fact I grew 4 experimental plants in Happy Frog recently and now having Calcium deficiency big time on my Big Bud plant in 7th week of flower.
