Ballasts basically take the AC from the wall socket and convert it to a higher voltage the lamp can run on. You screw the lamp into the hood, which has a reflector so that you don't waste the light going off the top of the bulb. The cord from the hood plugs into the ballast. There are a few different looking plugs in use, make sure you hood plug matches the ballast.

???

Can you explain:

Don't forget to account for voltage.

What do you mean?

2 wires for 120v and 2 other different colored wires for 240v. Of course, if your ballast isn't dual-voltage it's nothing to worry about. There would be a color-coded legend printed on a label somewhere on the ballast.

The voltage at the socket varies even within same wattages. 400w MH can be 250v-360v with ANSI M59, 285v-345v with ANSI M128; 400w HPS 170v-255v with ANSI S51, 430w HPS 180v-220v ANSI SonAgro S145. Is this in the direction you seek?
