Chinese crime gangs are setting up cannabis factories in Northern Ireland and supplying the drug across Ireland and the UK, the PSNI has revealed.

Police have mounted a major operation against the gangs since the start of the year to combat what Chief Constable Hugh Orde told the Policing Board yesterday was a "fairly new phenomenon".

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Sheridan said those involved are organised gangs of illegal immigrants. He said: "Many of the people involved would be illegal immigrants. They are clearly organised crime gangs."

When asked if the gangs had trafficked anyone into the province and forced them to work, Mr Sheridan said: "There is no evidence that the people involved in this are doing so under duress."

This week 13 people were arrested and 2000 cannabis plants seized with a potential street value of £1.1m as well as 20 kilos of prepared cannabis worth £200,000 as part of the police operation.

Last month, plants with an eventual street value of £750,000 were found and another 400 plants in separate raids in Castlerock and Portstewart.

Six men £ five from China and one from Korea £ were charged with possessing cannabis and possession with intent to supply following the raids.

Just days earlier a huge haul of cannabis was recovered by police in north Belfast £ with those involved thought to be foreign nationals. The plants were discovered by drug squad officers who swooped on a house after a tip-off.

Sir Orde said the crackdown would continue and added it is "a major commitment, but it does show it is working".

Cannabis remains one of the main drugs of choice in Northern Ireland. Seizures of the drug increased by 16% over the past year, according to police statistics.

Last year the Belfast Telegraph revealed the PSNI's hi-tech helicopter was being successfully used to spot cannabis factories. A number have been discovered by the helicopter's heat seeking device.

Other drugs that are becoming available in the province include cocaine, ecstasy and heroin.

The Chief Constable revealed however that in the last financial year police disrupted and brought down more drug gangs than in the previous 12 months.
