Is coir a good alternative in a soil mix for perlite?

I dont think so, but perlite is great why do u need an alternative?.....hydroton would be a good alternative i guess tho?

I prefer coir to soil, only because its simpler... but many veterans wouldn't trade in their soil secrets for a bag of canna coco for n e fing... I've found different methods liked by many, seems like its down to how much of a challenge an individual wants to set themselves

It is not, but you can do a 40soil/40coco 20perlite with some domolite lime. I'm like Joe I swear by Coco and started as a soil grower when I started, I did mix the two before making the full transition to just coco and perlite which IMO is the way to go.
