Ohio has some pretty good dispensaries and some really bad ones. Up in northwest Ohio Michigan keeps them on their toes and prices are much better. In SW Ohio you can easily find top shelf but the price! That's why I am here the good stuff is retail 270 oz on sale up to 35% off at least once a month. Every once in a while we get a new supplier/grower and for a while they can have great bud at a good price but no damn consistency. You buy the same jar or bag 3 times one of them will suck.

Here in NY the dispensary bud sucks. Over priced. Which I can understand with overhead, taxes and shit. Dry as shit,no smell.
I went to Colorado last summer. Went to a dispensary for the 1st time. Killer bud and great prices.
NY government fucks up everything it touches. I'm all for supporting your local cannabis grower..fuck the stores...I'm black market all the way.
My buddy grows bud better then any dispensary here in NY. Not one or 2 strains but at least 10. Every month these is always something fresh.
I have had quite the opposite, but mileage may vary with anything. Dispensary bud is consistent, clean, and great. $120 an OZ for nice outdoor 29% indica. No nasty fertilizer or chemical taste.

you get what you ask for at the dispo..... for all the hate dispos get, you'll still find that newest drop for $120 an Oz at the deli... have bagseed from the first test grows of jungle boys' wild OG varietal that way... still, if you are buying the cheap options expect it to be barely under mold/yeast/metals thresholds, remediated with spraying terps, remediated with radiation, or even have chemical-shifted isomers sprayed onto them...

one of the funniest things to me is people representing these markets (cali/michigan) like they are any better than the street corner. cali hasn't enforced cartel growing with nuerotoxins in years... michigan regularly has counterfeit problems on BOTH their dispo side (buying fake cheap products then selling them to patients) AND the cultivator/processor side (missing lbs, suddenly appearing lbs, and even fake carts from the processors themself). The shoutout to Ohio is funny because they are a vape only state, which led them to putting the 100% conversion rates for potency on packages....which does NOT happen when you smoke it. Ironic seeing all the 30%+s in Ohio when in Michigan the same bud would be labelled 20%

To the original thread though, flavorants are clearly the answer for why this question is. People buy based off packages when the important information is largely missing. It would be like if I made you buy a car and you got to see the left quarter body panel and the transmission....but thats all.... we dont get numbers for non-isoprene molecules on the lab reports... hell, you'd be lucky to get a terp analysis past two significant digits for the 3 primaries for a strain.

I guess if you're getting old famous strains like Jack Herrer or Northern Lights it will be a different adventure than if you buy bud somehow flavored like sour patch kids or some shit you can't even begin to recognize.

I only have two experiences (both with prerolls so take that for what it's worth).

Denver: I think I probably I got THCA as I'm guessing that's what their recreational menu consists of (store was the Green Dragon) or it was just super dry. Not a very pleasant smoke but I got high off my rocker. I have to include that we got to the store some 15 minutes before closing time so I hurried up with my choices to not inconvenience the staff too much.

LA: I paid about $20 for a fancy, kief-coated, diamond infused joint on recommendation from my budtender. That was a pleasant smoke (I took it easy with it and smoked it over the course of three days). Got it at Medmen but I doubt it was their house brand.

Stories of long lines at dispensaries kept me from trying my luck in Montreal back in 2019. Another visit is due ...

Edit: just to add that for both cases I didn't get blown away by aroma or taste.
All bud is mostly thca, it converts when heated

Jack here never grew weed as per his son, none of those varieties are what they used to be. It's all new stuff, they didn't clone the original and carry on with it. Any time you make seeds genetics vary

It's not randomly named based on nothing. Companies have affiliations and awards after all.

I live in michigan, and feel that dispo weed has a few issues. The first is stale flower. The time a plant sits in warehouse before it hits the shelves is embarrassing. Some prerolls are over a year old. They gas off so much flavor, in this time. Dispo weed also has multiple pheno plant runs. When it's tested, they get varied numbers, because they haven't isolated the winning pheno. When we pick up our weed, the first time, it may not be the same pheno, when you go the second time. This is lack of consistency. Big no, no in the hospitality dept. A big mac is always supposed to taste like a big mac. Let's not forget dispo weed runoff is not good for the environment. It's a pollution, that nobody wants to talk about. And don't get me started on METRC. Those fucking blue tags. Drives me nuts. Couldn't they be biodegradable for fuxks sake? And lastly, salt weed doesn't have personality or medicine, because of the grow. They are all white lab grow rooms with no soil.

They say terroir is all the factors that influence a plants life, and the farmer is a big part of this equation. Commercial farming lacks the love. Small farms get more interaction with the plants, and this is important. You can feel the difference in the flavor, and the effect. Last year my pine tar o.g. blew out everyone in the grow. Worker said it felt really nice to be stoned again. Hasn't felt this kind buzz in years. Soil/sun weed is just better. You can't make a light that does what the sun does. They have really good ones out now also, but they will never beat the sun. Synthetic/salt growers say the plant can't tell the difference between salt nutes and living soil. But research tells us plants communicate, and help each other using the root zones. And they can see/recognize us. Its not fairy tale hippy stuff anymore. Its factual.
I shop dispo weed alot. I like to check the market. And it's not good. Have not found a brand that I like as much as my own grow. Went on vacation to ventura cali two years back, and smoked the dispo weed. Wasn't any better. Just same dispo athena weed.
The best weed I've had was home grown g13. It made me hallucinate. 🤣 you will never find a dispo strain that will take you to this place. It just won't happen. Homegrown in michigan since legalization, has went waay up. The boof growers quit, and the all you have left are farmers that are growing fire! Just like beer and wine, and bourbon, the best is small craft sun soil weed!

If anything, yup I've found commercial weed is stale. Two brands use a "free range" label, I think some Nanticoke and one other brand. It's like $2 more. The claim is outdoor plus only biomass fertilizer and some other blah blah. I get grumpy about some new things, anything other than flower, keif, and hash is kinda over-sciencing. If I hadn't heard of the strain before 2000, I probably won't touch it. Ditto for celebrity brands.
I'm just happy it's not moldy or full of unrinsed chem.
Fucking journalists though, they purposely included the "case nugs" that aren't for sale in a contamination scare article in my area because fucking of course shit was growing in it. It's just for the display and gets suck in open air under a lamp. God knows what they do with it but as they say "we can dispose of the garbage collective quarter ounce and not even notice".

I used to buy my weed from a WW2 vet, always a crazy experience. Best thing that ever happened is when they threw his sawed off in the canal.no matter who you bought from , always the same. Never turned down any weed, if you were looking, you were out. Enter dispensary’s, mind boggling amount of rock hard nugs with crazy names. No thanks. I gave the waitress who waits on us at pool night an ounce of my weed. The next week I asked how it was. She said me and my husband never seen weed like that before, only indulging in desp. Stuff. I took out my phone with the magnifying glass and showed her a bud. “See all that crystally sugary stuff?” . That’s what you want. Now she happy takes bags for her and her husband, they are early 20’s . People aren’t exposed to anything but that stuff nowadays, gimme my own grown!

Well, I'm happy that we have Medical and in states where it's recreational happy for that too.

As a medical person who writes mathematical papers, my weed needs to work for me.
It is always a guess if the "Strain of the Day" at the dispensary is worth the $60 for an eighth.
So, when I find one there that is close enough to my personal strain, when I am out of my personal, it then becomes "will they have it next week?"
So it's produce people. Crops come in and good weed goes out fast.
Now I am not a big fan of machine trimmed bud. I assume they make other products off the trim but the total goodness is gone in some cases.

Anyway.. what I hate is the "Pay a lot and take your chances." That is for medical use. Not every cannabis is what works best for me. Spending bank to get bunk really sucks.

So fight for the right for all Americans to grow their own. Just sayin'

Does anyone else just feel that dispensary cannabis is awful? Once you start growing your own, there is no going back.
The dispensary weed here in MASS is pretty good, but not as good as the weed that I just grew. My hybrid from Exotic Genetics is super strong and smooth as silk. You can rip a massive hit and there is nothing harsh. The dispensary shit I think it not cured right? I don't know. It's usually dryer and a little harsh. I cured mine for 6 months in Grow Bags which I'm sure they don't do.

A 1/4 lb of my weed makes it up to your neck of the woods every year. Just trying to help you cape coders out!
