Gmd's Freaky Grow Dungeon

I've been bothering folks over here long enough, I figure I'd better start a journal of sorts. I've been growing 10 years. Started with 3 beans in a single pot with FFOF and the Fox Farms trio, under a 400 watt HPS. I fried those plants to a crisp, literally. Then I joined a online community and started learning.

Over the years, my grow rooms have evolved and changed. I'm a crusty ol bugger and I like to play. I started with my first real grow room was a 1K watt HPS in a homemade hurricane lamp cool tube in soil with Fox Farms and got some great buds, thanks to the online community I was a part of. That evolved into a 4K watt flower room 10x17 with running water, 2 circuit breaker boxes and an 18K BTU mini split AC, separate clone/veg room and my mother plants had a small room all to themselves. That was the best set up I've had to date. Where I am now is in a different house (old crappy house with a crappy basement) with a 3K watt flower room, the same mini split AC, running water (Evolution RO unit with the DI post filter, and inline ozone generators for odor control, exhausted out of the house, of course. The last time I had to haul a CAN 150 up a flight of stairs was indeed the last time i ever wanted to do that shit again.

My veg room is a mess. I am currently running 1 8 bulb T5 loaded with veg bulbs and a couple Hortilux powerveg bulbs, 1 2 bulb T5, 1 4 bulb T5, 1 400 watt MH (air cooled) and 1 apollo 8 LED. I like the powerveg bubls a lot. I'm seeing faster plant and root growth using them. You only want them to be 50% or less of the bulbs you are using - they will fry your plants.

I run Advanced Nutrients Jungle Juice 2 part in both hand watered coco and hydro. No I don't buy into all the hype and I don't have all the ridiculous additives and BS. I run the Hobbyist line and for all the crap many growers spew about how terrible AN is, I will say this shit works exceptionally well.
Jungle Juice is the old pre-pH perfect Sensi line. I also add in B52, Bug Bud (weeks 1.5-6 or so in flower), Voodoo Juice (yes, expensive and I friggin love this stuff, so do my plants), Overdrive (last week before the flush) I also add in Bud Factor X (again expensive and it gives a noticeable difference in the buds), Sugar Daddy (i think it's something in the sulfur that adds to the terp profile of the finished buds - they are delicious), and Great White myco. I have a system: I fill 2.5 gallon gas can with RO water. 1 full shot glass of base nutes, the additives are 1/2 a shot of each at the appropriate time in growth, ph to 6.1, feed, water, feed, water, feed, water, wash rinse repeat. I have not fried a plant in flower since I stopped using GH nutes, period. If I get a little tip burn, I've give them 2 waterings in a row. It's that easy. I have found that AN is gentle on the plants and the nutrients are more bioavailable.

My Moms are in FFOF and I feed them a variety of stuff, Sea Bird Guano, epsom salts, Fox Farms nutes, cal mag, etc.

I'll say first and foremost this:

I don't freak out over a yellow leaf or 2 on a plant, the occasional pH twisting, tacoing of leaves, or minor stuff like that.

just saying. I have just come out of a 2 1/2 year long broad mite infestation. For 2 years, I had no idea what the hell was going on. After I found out about the broad mites, I fought them for 6 months with everything: AVID, Green Cleaner, Forbid, etc, you name it, I tried it. I did a total clean out and the rooms sat empty for 4 months. After that total hell, I will welcome a tacoing leaf with open arms. Life's too short

current Strains:
Black Berry Kush - clone only - tastes like Blackberry syrup with fresh Thyme and a hint of lime. Great relaxing daytime smoke - makes me relaxed, happy and want to dance.

Blue Mystic - Nirvana - variety of flavors in this girl - berry with citrus and hints of mint. Another great daytime smoke

Skywalker Kush - Riserva Privada - smkunky skunky skunky. Nice buzz. too

Double Strawberry Diesel - Reservoir - I bought these beans back in 08. grew out a few and love her so much I made F2's then did 2 backcrosses to my mom. I think i have about 20 of those beans left. She has a beautiful earthy taste with a sharp wild strawberry finish and her high is all soaring ECSD. I mean you'll feel like you're being sucked into the couch while floating 10 feet above your body. Scared the shit out of me the first time 2 friends and i smoked her out of a bong. 3 of us couldn't finish the bowl. I thought it was permanent,

Hippy Slayer - Clone only phenotype of Bodhi's Dirty Hippy x Road Kill Unicorn. First girl will come down this coming weekend depending on how the trichs loks. Friday will be 9 weeks but she doesn't feel done yet.

Kali Mist - yes I like old school genetics. I just started one girl in hydro in the flower. I'll post more as information comes available.

C99 (Holy Grail cut) x Starfighter - test grow for a friend.

Cali O x Starfighter - again a test grow for a friend.

newer plants -
LA Confidential - my all time favorite. Such simple genetics. I can take 3 tokes, dance on the table tops at the bar and after a couple hours want to sit and melt into the couch. My back won't hurt for 3 days too. The potency on this girl is off the hook. I rolled a nice 110mm cone and smoked out 8 people at the bar one night. When the joint was done, a good friend sat with his head in his hands he was so high. I had trouble seeing well enough to drive home. I popped my last 3 beans. I got these in 09, i believe, before DNA lost their LA mom, so I am praying for a male out of the 3 plants i have. I will make beans and do some back crossing

Clementine - Madd Farmer - Madd was kind enough to send me his Clementine beans, which is one of his staple plants he does his crosses with. Supposed to be much like LA. She looks dangerous

D-Con - popped this girl on a whim - she just sounds ridiculous. It's Soma's NYCD x LA Confidential. i fail to see how that could be bad. I got one bean to pop and I hope for a girl.

I'm looking forward to getting the Holy Grail cut back. She is alos one of my top 5 favorites. She tastes like fresh passion fruit and makes me want to get naked and run down the middle of the street. She was my go to strain for taking to concerts.

now, lets see if i can figure out how to upload pictures.......

hey, that was easy..
The hydro project is basically me just playing around and seeing what happens if I do this or that. I have a blackberry kush in a cooled bucket in the veg room that i have high hoped for though. stay tuned.
I'll try to spare everyone the boring stuff.

anyway, thanks for stopping by
Have a Grateful and Freaky day!

I do have a few seed prject coming up, more like preservation project:

I'll be making F2's and then backcrossing a couple times to the original mom
LA Confidential
DSD
Sour Diesel IBL - I have 3 beans of Reservoir's Sour Diesel IBL and a good friend just sent me another ten or twelve. I toyed with the idea of hitting the DSD mom with SOur D pollen and then backcrossing, since it's this Sour Diesel that made the Starwberry Diesel iu the first place.

i want to be sure these strains are around a while longer.

Nice! I'll be following along.

Just a quick question, not sure if you can answer it or not (probably you can). How hot does your 8 bulb T5 get? I'm in the process of setting up a third tent, a little 2 x 4 (actual dimensions are 31" x 59") that I'm gonna use for mother plants and veg. I have a Sunblaze four foot, 8 bulb T5 that I'm gonna use for lighting (bought it a year or two ago and never used it haha), but I'm curious how hot it gets, if I'm gonna need to vent it outside etc. I don't wanna set up the tent and then discover that I'm gonna need to vent it outside and have to move everything around and shit. I've looked all over the internet for reviews and whatnot, but the reviews are all over the place. Some people say it gets really hot, other people say it doesn't get hot at all. Super-annoying. So yeah, just wondering.

Those plants look pretty stellar, btw, especially the third pic from the bottom. Looks like its got about 25 tops haha.

High Minitiger, thanks for stopping by. If it's winter, I run all 8 bulbs with ventilation. in the warmer months, I only run 4 bulbs. it does get warm. I actually have 2 of those mother keeper tents. I fire them up during the winter with the 8 bulb fixtures for cloning and seed projects. Keeps the clones nice and warm.

That bubkets of tops is actually one plant - Blue Mystic. She did very well.

Sweet, thanks!

So running your 8 bulb T5 with only four bulbs doesn't mess up the ballast or anything? That's another thing I've read, that if you don't use all the bulbs, it can fry the ballast or something.

no. The 8 bulb fixtures i have have 2 switches, each switch turns on 4 bulbs.

here's some trich porn. I was hoping she'd be ready by today (Frida), but she's pretty Sativa dominant and there's too many clear trichs still. I'll trim a branch to get a goo dtsate but the rest of the plant will wait a few days. The other three will wait at least another week

Nice! Which plant is that?

I'm just gonna get a 2 x 2 8 bulb and throw it in my 3 x 3 drying tent and turn that into the mother/veg tent and use the 2 x 4 tent as my new "drying tent." I decided that I really don't feel like taking down my window box thing and cutting another hole in it to vent the 2 x 4 T5. Maybe I'll just sell that fixture or something. Or keep it around in case my flower tent light craps out on me unexpectedly.

Anybody interested in a never-been-used Sunblaze 8 bulb T5 HO unit? Haha.....

your 2x4 doesn't have vent holes? what brand of tent is it?

the trichs are Hippy slayer at 63 days. there's a hint of amber coming in. I prefer, generally speaking, 50/50 cloudy amber, depending on the strain, of course.
Awesome, I was gonna ask you about that Hippy Slayer. That's the strain you're running that I was most interested in. Gotta love Bodhi.

My tent does have vent holes, but unless I cut another hole in my windowbox (or whatever you call it; big box I built out of plywood to cover the window that I vent out of) and attach another flange, it'll just be blowing the hot air out into the room. I suppose I could get one of those T flanges (Y flange?) or whatever they're called and use that to replace the flange I'm currently using, but, uh, I'm lazy. I don't think the 2 x 2 will get so warm that I have to vent it outside, but the 2 x 4 probably would. I'm in SoCal, no need to use heat generated from grow lights to warm the room in the winter time, ya know?

Have you grown that Hippy Slayer before? Impressions?

If I were running a vented tent my ideal setup would go like this.

The vent flange on the window, wall or whatever it went on would be a double flange (one on inside & one on outside). Air intake filter would be on outside of flange. Then ducting on the other side of flange would bring the fresh air to the tent. I would use the lowest tent port available.

This allows the cold dense air to fill up the tent like water. As the hot air is drawn from the top of the tent the cold air fills the tent from the bottom upwards.

Now you want negative pressure for your tent still to control smells.
So your inline fan must be inside the tent. If your intake ducting is too restrictive/long an intake fan may need to be utilized on the intake portion.

The next part is the exhaust portion.
We start with the charcoal filter mounted as high up as possible (think of it touching the ceiling/roof). Then duct from the charcoal filter to the inline fan intake side. Duct From the inline fan exhaust side to the air cooled light fixture. Then duct from the other end of the light fixture through the vent at the top of the tent to the wall/window flange where air is exhausted.

This setup allows you to run all major functions of the intake & exhaust functions. While maintaining clean intake air supply and scrubbed exhaust air. Only using 2 ports on your tent.

Come on, @rmoltis you've "liked" some of my posts on my grow logs and shit, you know I know how to set up a tent haha!

Just fucking with you...

That's pretty much how my tents are set up, but I use passive intake with a Dust Shroom on the outside, rather than an intake fan. I was just wondering how hot those T5's get, on account of me being lazy and not feeling like going through the trouble of attaching more ducting and then venting outside etc.

I'm gonna get that 2 foot T5 and see how hot it gets and stuff. If I have to vent outside, I will, but if I don't have to.... My 3 x 3 tent is at least a little bigger than a 2 x 4 anyway, probably should've been my plan all along, especially since my 3 x 3's already set up and everything. I just figured, you know, I already have that 4 foot light, so....

For some reason I thought you were already drawing air in from outside my bad.

T5 fixtures do get hot.
My little 2ft 8 bulb will heat up my lower chamber to °95+ if I don't keep the air moving.

no need to apologize, my friend.
my veg room get up to around 85 max in the summer, during the winter though, it get too cold to clone down there so i have a mother keeper tent with an 8 bulb T5 fixture, I take the cuttings downstairs and place the in the coco cups, then carry them up to the bedroom for rooting. works like a charm. I have a side flange open so some heat can get out. but in the winter it works very well

A note on the Hippy Slayer:

I took a bud yesterday and a branch last night. This afternoon a ground up a few small buds and put the ground bud on a plate in front of a fan. When it was dry, it smelled like fresh cut grass. I thought, oh man, this is going to taste like shit. I rolled that stuff up into a skinny joint, I roll 110mm papers, but it was about half the diameter of a cigarette. Met up with a couple friends tonight and fired it up. I was a little harsh but not like i expected. The flavor wasn't bad either. I did have a touch of skunk to it. Potency wise the three of us couldn't finish that j. We got through 3/4 of it when my friends said they wanted no more. I feel completely retarded right now, very heady high, not so much premature heart raciness at all. I was very very talkative though and goofy. I'm going to go ahead and take one down tonight. The other 3 will come down next Friday, I think. The smoke from those 3 will take people's heads off.

very nice!

Worrrrrrd. Hippy Slayer sounds real good. I like talkative, goofy highs with no raciness, that's pretty much my favorite kind of stone haha....

ah your location speaks volumes. I'm on the Great plains where it's 95 in the summer and -20 in the winter with a couple feet of snow. When it's cold out, i just fire up the T5's in a tent in an upstairs bedroom, keep the tent closed for the most part and it's stays nice and warm - the rest of the house runs about 65 degrees.

yeah the thing i found most impressive is i have 3 more that I'm going to wait another week to harvest. I cna't imagine how potent those will be.
My impressions on the Hippy Slayer - some guys using GH nutes had some troubles with her. Not sure on details though. When i first put her in flower, she didn't like the bloom nutes much. Her skinny leaves curled and and rounded like an inverted taco. So I lowered her nutes to the point where she started asking for nitrogen (some yellowing leaves) and then added a bit more of the base nutrients (Jungle Juice 2 part), Once she started budding, I added in the Big Bud at half strength. Once the bud here decent sized and she was asking for more, I started pounding the hell out of her with full strength everything. She took it well. Buds are a little fluffy - I don't have her dialed in, but i have a great baseline for the next time i run her. She's been on plain water for a week not. Fan leaves are pretty much used up but there's still a few left that are green. She'll go another week. I'll go grab some pics

That's why I grow totally organic: so my plants don't "ask" for too too much. They still ask for things occasionally, but at least I know that, for the most part, it's in the soil already.

Or something like that haha.

Looking forward to those Hippy Slayer pics, it sounds like a really good, up my alley-type strain.

Can you tell it's starting to get a bit chilly here?

I checked trichs on the half Hippy Slayer girl last night. She was all cloudy, a few amber and at 67 days as of today. The rest of that plant came down.

she's pretty but fluffy as hell. I pounded the shit out of her and it shows. But, like i said before, she took it well and now I can start dialing her in. I'm planning on going with less of the whole nute line i use to get the fluffiness taken care of and adding some calcium nitrate. This girl loves her Nitrogen but didn't like much else. So I'll cut the nutes down, keeping the same proportions with the bottled stuff and add a couple grams of Calcium Nitrate. I have a bunch of raw salts from Custom Hydro Nutrients. Great spot for micro tuning your nutrient regimen or getting your raw salts.
