How to bring out taste/flavour

I've been growing for almost 3 years now and I've never produced bad weed, in fact it has all been well above average. It smokes nice, good effects and not harsh one bit. The smell is always on point, but for some reason I can't bring out the taste of the terps. It doesn't taste bad, I must stress that. 80-90% of the weed I've ever smoked doesn't have that kind of flavour, but I know there's weed out there that when smoked you can taste the orange, lemon, Z or whatever. To be fair, I don't smoke top shelf dispensary weed evey day though so maybe that's why I don't see it often.

I come from England but now I'm living in Thailand. I had to start off small and because of that, I didn't have the money to buy everything I wanted. I've had to use the tap water which I've learned is full of 'something', all I know is the ppm is around 260 and there's no calcium or magnesium in it. I have to run calmag with every feed. RO water is available here from machines nearby but not easy to carry 5 gallons in 35-36°c heat with without transport.

Regardless, I'm going to start using the RO water as when tested the ppm was around 20 I think. I grow in soil and the stuff I've just taken down got 3 feeds with water only after tapering down the nutrients, the last one was with the RO water and it has no taste up to now. It's into day 17 of drying and its not done yet as I do it low and slow, hung as whole plants with large fans removed. Most growers here have recommended 3 weeks to me, after that it will be going into Grove bags, heat sealed and stored in my new wine fridge for a few weeks. Tried some today and unfortunately it's burning quite dark. Not black, but like a darkish grey colour. No harshness or bad taste as mentioned above. There's still some excess moisture in it but I think it could also be down to whatever is in the water. I should have tested the water a lot sooner, I hold my hands up to that dumbass mistake.

My question is this... At what point of the grow or drying phase does the taste start to come out of the flowers? I've had flower that literally coated my mouth with flavour, and then I've had buds that smelled amazing and tasted like burned flowers. I can't seem to get this part right, definitely switching to RO water and flushing harder next time which should fix the ash colour, a minor issue in my books, but I need to know what it causing my weed to have no translation of the terpenes. I want to make a legitimate business out of this here and getting my weed to taste right will make it stand out from 90% of the stuff here.

The only time my weed has had 'terp flavour' was when it was left in a jar at very low temperatures for 3 months without being opened (I was on holiday). The house had no heating on so temps were probably around 10-12°c. There must be a way of doing this quicker though as I bought some Gypsy Soap here not long ago that clearly wasn't cured for long but was the most flavoursome weed I've ever tasted, the flavour was still noticeable a few minutes after having a bong. In 20 years of smoking this plant I've never experienced flavour like that and since then, I've been obsessed with trying to figure this out.

Hey Top,

If you’re growing in soil I wouldn’t use RO. Sort of a waste of money. Get the tap water tested. I doubt whatever you’re smelling in the tap water is going into the soil up the plant affecting the final aroma of a bud. Flushing prior to harvest is another waste of RO. It does nothing.

So why is my bud not blowing me over with wonderful scents?
There are many environmental factors to consider: growing season (really hot or normal or really wet one), plant genetics, soil quality, harvest timing (critical) and curing.

Good luck. How do you like living in Thailand? Is weed legal there?

Zill.

certain strains no matter what is done to them they will have a bland flavour / taste. you need to find something with the terps in that your searching for and keep that. different sorts of nutrients can also effect the over all taste / terp content.

Are you thoroughly checking trichomes at the end and not harvesting too early...

I agree with with @Zill about ro water... tap is fine... also i would try not flushing at all.... if that makes ua nervous... just keep feeding 1 plant until chop down and see if you notice any differences...

Maybe! And I’ll bet it’s tricky to dry in a place where the temperature averages 85° never goes below 75. And the humidity probably averages 90%! or grow in for that matter! Would be nice to see the pictures of the plants they are talking about!

And sellers have been known to spray their goods with terpene extract to make it smell and taste, stronger than it is!
Terpenes make weed smell like terpenes, not weed. They also taste like shit, not weed.

OP is lying, because this is total nonsense. Cannabis requires oxygen to cure.

You can figure if it's on a pot forum and it's longer than 2 sentences it's probably AI posted by one of those Future Cannabis Project retards. Internet pot retards usually keep it short unless they are trying to come up with some chat gpt breeding gnostism. Chat gpt is like the legal era internet stoner God.

Legal era internet retards: "Weed smells like all these things it doesn't smell like. But how do I grow weed that tastes good. "

Impossible to have this conversation. The retards will blame literally anything then claim Cat Piss smells like mold and Skunk smells like a pair of shoes.

This always seems to be a difficult topic to discuss. I suspect it's because there are so many factors that can affect taste and smell (and there are so many opinions). Breaking it down into subtopics is probably the best way to approach it. Those subtopics include strain, nutrient timing, harvest timing, the effect of chlorophyl, drying method, curing method, storage method, etc. (I think I listed most factors, but probably not all.)

How long do you usually cure for before you start smoking?

Could it maybe be you just taste certain flavors more then others and what you've grown doesn't have that flavor profile you can taste?

I say this because I was in a motorcycle accident a few years ago, every since then a lot of things don't taste or even smell the same to me and some things have no taste at all anymore. Some food and beverages I use to love, don't even like anymore. Some food and beverages I use to hate, I now love. Same goes with bud, it just tastes different then before the accident.

Proper pheno hunt with good genetics is where's it at. Can't polish a turd whatever you do it's still a turd.
Also healthy plants with proper Sulphur levels and some amino-acids available can help bring out the terpene expressions of each cultivar.

don't forget the drying and curing process in a good enviro (wine fridge at 15-16c will do a good job for curing, a slow and steady cure, one to one and a half month will get you primo stuff), this is where the mastery comes into play and where things can get really good or just average.

you can keep weed sealed for years as long as the humidity stays between 58-62%,.. that way the curing process continues and can go on for 2 years+,..

I’ve cracked open jars that have been sitting for more than a year expecting the worst! Went, whoa, this smells pretty fucking good! Better than when it went in! Lol! And a disclaimer! This statement was not created or edited by AI !!!! 😀

I have taken the ring around the top of the jar off of some that I’ve been sitting around for a year, and went to remove the seal, and it blew about 2 feet into the air! I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but the weed was good and smelled good and smoked good! Probably Jarred it up maybe a little early!

Fermentation? I had some that I forgot for a long time, and it was a similar story. I don't know for sure if it fermented, but that was my best idea at the time. I know that some teas are fermented.
