Breeders stated flowering times are optimistic.
It was this discrepancy that is commonly attributed to optimism or deceptive marketing practice that caused me to question whether breeders were measuring flowering time from the flip date. Their flowering times are more accurate when measurement begins after stretching is done or when buds first appear. The flip date is convenient because it's definite, but it's not when the plant transitions from the vegetative stage to the reproductive stage. That later part in a plant's life is inconvenient because it is difficult to determine and describe. Nevertheless, stated flowering times are more accurate when measurement of flowering time begins at this later date.

I've heard both things--start when the first pistils appear or start when the first buds appear. Is that the same thing? Here are a few pics a few days apart. Are any of these a good day to start counting?

It's a way to start an argument. 😉🤣

Seriously, though, I think of the pistils and buds as two essential parts of the plant's reproductive process. The pistils are pollinated to form seeds in the buds, so buds must be present for the pistils to do what they do. Buds are cannabis's version of flowers. Cannabis is wind pollinated, so they didn't evolve to attract insects, and thus they don't look like flowers to us, but that's what they are.

So in that case I feel pretty confident in giving a flowering start date of 1/9, which makes the buds are 9 weeks and 2 days old. Data sheet said 7-9 weeks. I'm told that's very optimistic even given perfect conditions, so I think the plant is right on schedule.

Of course, those data sheets are estimates. I intentionally grow my plants slowly, so my flowering times will always be longer -- on purpose. Now I don't always keep track of time. When I did, it did seem the sighting of the first buds was a good time to start the clock. There are other indicators of maturity, as well. For example, I look for the pistils to go from white to pale yellow or when I see the first orange pistil.

Giving you a gold star for that hygrometer on the lid, what did you set it with, plumbers putty? Sure as heck beats wiggling the jar around until the LED is facing ya.
Oh no man it’s actually just artist putty and the stuff cures in the air over a while and I like to do it that way in case I need to swap out a hygrometer if it breaks or something that way, I’m not having to like chisel it out like I don’t know Superglue or fucking rubber cement.
You just have to make sure that the model of hydrometer that you do get has the port on the back of it in order to take the reading not the top or the side and they were great man. I even throw them in like big ass totes.

There are jars you can buy with meters already on the lids, but a drill and hot glue also works. I use cookie tins. I'm old fashioned and shy away from plastics touching my food.

We should start a series of diy caveman tutorials.

Hey, @Captspaulding! How did you cut the square cornered hole in that thin metal lid? I was thinking of punching it out with a cold chisel.

Not sure what he did but I have a dremel and a wheel attachment that'll be perfect. If you don't have one you can drill 4 holes and use a thin hacksaw blade (crude tool method)

Exactly man that’s what I do. I just take it like a quarter inch drillbit hit each corner and then just jigsaw it out or I use my really really tiny electrician snips. It depends on the size of the lid.

That would totally make quick work of it. You would just have to do some work with some channel locks and get it flexed back into shape a bit

I love this. I literally repurpose everything though.

And despite the stereotype about weed munchies, I even used weed edibles to help me lose 80 pounds of weight.
Could you expand on this a bit?
I have more than a couple pounds to drop and would love to know if I can adjust my usage to assist in that. I did just join Planet Fitness, so I’m not expecting any miracles from weed, but still, it’s encouraging to hear it could actually be helpful.

Easy peasy. I make my own gummies and I started replacing one to two meals a day with gummies. When the stomach would growl I told myself I'm not hungry I'm thirsty and I'd drink water to shut it up. The gummies have coconut oil and lecithin in them and it kinda works as an additional appetite suppressant. But after a while I was able to replace my evening gummy with a few bong hits and it had a similar appetite suppressing effect. I didn't do any workout routines. I walk the dogs around the block and tend to my pot plants outside.

Really what this boils down to is a calorie deficit created through intermittent fasting, and the weed relieves the discomfort of putting your body through that until you become acclimated to it... and you do!
