I do know it can be dangerous to humans and the company dose say to not be in the room when doing light treatment. I guess it’s only logical to assume it is dangerous to plants as well. I’m thinking the dose will be low but I don’t know enough about it to say if the plant will be effected to the point of yield loss.
Yeah me either… so take what i say with a grain of salt. Im always skeptical and its not like I haven’t been wrong before. Just food for thought

I'd be especially interested to see how it does against PM.
Though, from what I remember, even in a petri dish setting, the effectiveness of uv against mold was severely diminished even for subsurface tissues... essentially a microscopic version of a human shield. But that may have been with what is now obsolete technology.

I really appreciate and respect your opinions just like moe so I’m glad you chimed in. I do like to try new things and I’ll definitely learn along the way. It will be interesting how much info I get from IntraLight, so far they have been really cool and very knowledgeable. The founder and CEO of IntraLight did a interview with Mr. Grow it, which I know people have issues with him but he dose interview a lot of knowable people. The CEO really seems to know what he’s talking about but the light itself was not talked about a whole lot in the interview.

Here’s the interview if anyone wants to watch.

im interested to follow along and see what your experience is like. Like most new things… they are a gimmick until they aren’t… ive learned long ago never say never… unless you want to look like a fool in the future… been there done that lol

What do you currently use for ipm management? I’m glad you chimed in moe, I really respect your opinion. I think they are really gearing towards organic companies which may explain the price tag, it is a bit steep but I figure over time I would spend that on other ipm products. The biggest thing that got me would be the prevention of an outbreak and not just being reactive.
Sorry re-reading this post and see I missed this.

I'm weird, I think most people feel I go way overboard, but I try very hard to keep conditions clean and as sterile as possible in the grow space. I'm unusual because I also do other stuff in this space like grow mushrooms and do tissue culture, both of which require sterility for at least part of the process. But if I got a case of PM or Bud Rot or Pythium, I take that very seriously as it impacts what I am doing outside of cannabis.

With strict cleaning I have not had a pest in years, knock on wood.

Some of the stuff I do to not introduce the baddies, or stop them quick if they get in anyhow:

Ethanol based hand sanitizer (also works really well to get the sticky off your hands / gloves)

Drains are the biggest problems for gnats. They are most likely where your infestation would start.

Wow, now that’s some goals! I dabble with mushrooms and completely understand why you are so clean. Lost a few mono tubs to the green death. I bet you have an amazing glove box don’t you.

Hey so I got some info back from the company. I asked “Dose the UVC light effect plant dna specifically cannabis? Also has tests been done with the effects of the light on mycology?” The reply was “Intralight's are attenuated to only affect the DNA of small soft-bodied insects and pathogens specifically while leaving your crop (including cannabis) unaffected. They do not effect the DNA of the plant. Intralight's pesticidal treatment does damage mycology in the case of microorganisms like PM. They are not tested or intended for use on mycology.”

Second part was for @beluga

UVC that specifically targets pathogens and soft body insects while leaving your crop unaffected… to me this really jumps out. Why cant you run it for 24hrs then?

UVC is UVC it is indiscriminate.

Personally i feel that at a safe dose for plants it wont be effective to kill pests and at a dose effective to kill pests it will more than likely harm plants.

Ozone made the same claims to start with and in the end you cannot use Ozone in adequate amounts help n the grow room that does not harm the plants. To solve this they designed a way to keep the ozone in the unit and treat with UVC. Those units are very effective in killing airborne pathogens.

again i cannot say it will not work but my guts says to good to be true and my understanding of UVC light and its effects leads me to the same conclusion… but i am a skeptic by nature so take it with a grain of salt

so just to add PM effects the top of the leaves… where they wont be exposed to the UVC of their product… again this is look at it from a glass half empty skeptic

I would tend to agree with your logic, guess I’ll be the test dummy. Do you know any signs I can look for that might indicate trouble? I guess I’m trying to ask how will I know if it’s affecting my plants I guess.

Physical damage will be obvious closest to the light source. On the bright side if its low enough dose it can provide some benefits to cannabis but then it likely wont kill the bugs. I have read a few studies that very low dose for as little as 15 min a week can be beneficial

I’ll do some deep dives into this and see what I find, this unit will only be run 1 minute a day although they did say I could bump it up to 5 minutes a day because my space is bigger than the 4x4 area that each light is supposed to treat.

Just an update, I talked with Simon the CEO and co-founder of IntraLight on the phone the other day. He’s so full of great knowledge especially when it comes to pests and pathogens. The UVC led they use in the IntraLight is a paten pending proprietary led that bombards pasts with dna damaging rays. So the light dose not necessarily kill the pests right away but actually destroy the dna making the pest infertile and unable to reproduce. The UVC dose not effect the plants dna during each nightly treatment. Plants are exposed to way more UVC in the outdoors than this light produces which makes sense why they plants are un-effected. There are actually studies that have shown UVC to actually boost potency but nothing conclusive. Again if anyone has interest or questions feel free to ask away.

I’ve been testing this light for about 3 months. Very effective and does not damage the plant in any manner. Not loss of yield. The plants it treats looks no different than the plants not on the ring. Win win we’re buying 60.
