I'm late the party but I think I can probably help someone out on this topic! I'm a professional cannabis photographer in Oregon using a Fujifilm X-T4 and Laowa CF 65mm F2.8 2X Macro lens. I generally NEVER shoot past 1X, generally in the 0.25-0.5X range for the photos I have attached here and shooting at F5.6 all day. Capturing a macro shot is one thing, photo stacking multiple shots into one crystal clear image is another. That's the key factor is photo stacking. You can either achieve that by manual focusing and racking the lenses focal point taking multiple shots from front to back of your object and stack them in photoshop. But if you want to take it to the next level you'll need to purchase a Cognisy's rail system w/ StackShot and stack all images using HeliconFocus. If you're able to invest in that sytem, it'll be a game changer! Lighting is key and for the love of god, make sure your camera doesn't move a hair durring the capture process.
Regarding your Canon 100mm macro lens, I know it can be done. Look up "Daniel Aucoin" on youtube or instagram. He's a super pro and uses that lens with magical results.
Attached are some of my photos using the tools I listed above.
