Namaste,

A while ago, my friend and I started building a small cab for her. Since it's placed in her one-room-flat and a lot of people come by, it had to be unsuspicious.

The cab exist of 3 separate room: (LxWxH)
- Flowering room: 36,4x42,6x70,6 (0,16m², 0,11m³)
- Growroom: 42,6x20,0x34,7 (0,09m², 0,03m³)
- Electroroom: 42,6x20,0x34,7

The cab's material is waterproof multiplex, 12mm thick, sawed at our needs in the shop. It painted white with primer on the inside. Outside paint is water based.

Lightning exist of 8x 8Watt TL Mini, colour temperature 827, 830 and 840. Everything on the frame is wired with 1.5mm² solid core wire (VD). Ballasts are magnetic, so they sadly enough create a lot of heat. The frame for the lamps is made of aluminium-strips and hung up with chains. Since we try to be safe, a relay is placed between the lamps and the timer, and everything is grounded.
A pc-fan (12V, driven with 5V) is hung next to the frame to cool down the ballasts.
To have maximum light efficiency we will (mostly) use the scrog-method.

Air-intake is active, driven by a 8cm pc-fan (3-12V) and made lightproof with a labyrinth. On the entrance is a cover, behind it a stocking to prevent dust and insects coming in.
The air-extraction is driven by a bathroom fan (100m³/h), build into a small box stuffed with unknown filter fabric, so it's less noisy. The noise coming of the cab is comparable with a computer, not a silent one nor a loud one. On the intake of this is also a stocking.
Air-purification will be taken care of by a home-made (hopefully) carbon filter.

The door created some problems since the hinge is too wide and the turning point rests to the side of the cab. First try it wouldn't close at all so we detached en reattached it. This only partially solved our problem so we put on some clamps on it to pull it shut.
It's made lightproof with aluminium L-strips, acoustic tape (for use with drywalls) and tape.

Ventilation towards the plants is provided by another pc-fan, able to pivot and possible to be extended with a second one.

As another safety-feature we fixed a smoke alarm to the back of the cab, on the outside of the electro-room.

All of this was done by hand with insufficient and simple tools of (minor) quality :whew

What still has to be done (for current grow):
- Making filter -> so far this has been a hassle. We can't find the right stuff for it so I'm trying to make one out of an old coffee tin and a pvc-pipe, but it turns out to be tougher then expected. The PVC pipe is drilled but the drill keeps breaking on the coffee tin. And dents are though to avoid.
More work on it will be done in a few ours.
- Cover fixtures of starters and cables with tape -> Had a short circuit twice because of the chains touching these (Last time was quite painful actually :dull )

And since it's a work in progress and will be for a while longer (time and money ain't on our side, nor is space :( )
What we like to change before next grow:
- Replace the frame of the lights by strong (and flat) aluminium strips or an aluminium plate. Perhaps aquarium reflectors will be used as well for an even better light efficiency.
- Attaching the scrog-netting to the soil container instead of to the sides of the cab -> making some kind of cube out of pvc-tubes (for electrical wiring), partially above, partially below ground and on top the netting. We like to give water from below and for this the soil container has to come out of the cab (which we forgot during building :dull)
We're also teased by the idea to provide ventilation by the part above ground and water by the part below ground, but so far have completely no idea how to do so.
- Furnish the growroom.

Other remarks so far:
- 12mm Multiplex is to thin -> it's difficult or nearly impossible to find the fitting screws, hooks,... for this thickness. It also breaks, splits and shatters quite easily.
- Chains used on the lamps work but are rather clumsy in the small space left.
- Extraction fan is producing quit a lot of vibrations -> replace Ty-raps with rubbers (not possible so for because not enough same to manoeuvre.
- Air extraction seems to be pretty low and temperature pretty high. And this is without a filter attached. So far its all fine so we hope it remains this way with filter attached.

Thanks for reading along and
Fire away those remarks (or hints) ;)

Cheers,
Teiwaz

PS: Sorry for the large amount of text, but lots of work and even more thinking about it went into it and will keep going to it.

Hey,

The grow diary of the strains in the cab, can be found here:

A few days ago the filter was finished and attached and so far seems to work. The sound coming from the cab has decreased even more (as expected) and can be compared to the sound coming of a rather silent computer.
But another problem seems to be lurking, the fan for extraction... De airflow coming out of the filter of ventilation hole seems the be rather low (if I hold my hand to it, it seems to be less then the air sucked in by the pc-fan in front of the labyrinth). We've been fiddling with the voltages of the intake (3 till 12V), but we don't dare to put it to high in case it might create overpressure.
