My overly ambitious second grow

OK, so my last two lavender plants were harvested and cured. All in all (from start to finish, including both indoor harvests and one outdoor) I harvested way more than i expected and am working furiously to consume it all. My last two lavenders were smaller and less dense than i'd have liked, but I decided that I wasn't invested enough to do serious trimming during flower. Had too much outdoor to trim and use. Overdried the outdoor harvest, but not too bad. Learned a lesson there. (That being: bag/bin the whole thing when its ready, don't leave it hanging for several extra days during trim.)

This round will be (I think):
  • Gorilla Zkittlez auto (barneys farm) (2x outdoor, started inside to harvest september-ish))
  • Chemdog fem (whitelabel? NASC) (2x outdoor, started inside late march to harvest whenever the fridgid MT fall air will allow! Thoush supposedly this might be a faster strain? WhoTF knows.)
  • muchacha auto (nasc freebie) (2x indoor)
First autos, and in a new 2x4 BAS bed, shooting for living soil, no till, etc etc. New grow, new thread: many questions and questionable choices coming eventually! Thanks again any/everyone for chiming in and also for posting your own journeys!

Well, finally have some seed in some soil. Not sure how it will all go since I changed up from fabric pots to a 2x4 bed in my 2x4 tent.

PXL 20230310 032632504

So the soil in the bed is the BAS Coots mix, with some perlite, Canadian sphagnum peatand moss, and compost (glacier gold) mixed at about 30/30/30. I tried to add some extra perlite because i was worried about aeration, and i didn't do anything special with my bottom few inches in the bed. Been mixing in water slowly this week and turning.

I'm starting two Chemdog fem to veg for 3ish months indoors and move outdoor, and two muchacha autos for the 2x4 bed inside. (Plus some gzkittles autos a little later for outside as well, and some peppers and tomatoes to veg indoors too.)

For starting seeds i pulled some of the BAS Coots mix, and cut it with perlite and peat, at about 40/30/30. (I'm curious as to whether this mix sounds ok for seed starting!)

Moistened it and placed everything in cups, poked a 1/2" hole and dropped in some seeds. Sprayed to moisten topsoil. Will cover and spray as needed to keep moist until something sprouts!!

Sprouts! Four days after planting, the Chemdog fems sprouted, then a day or so later the Muchacha autos. (Also some Chery tomato starts have sprouted, waiting in peppers to poke aboveground.) The cover crop in the 2x4 bed is starting to sprout (60%clover from BAS), but only just.

Curiously, one of the Chemdog fems took forever to get her first true leaves, and now only has little nubbly ones. I doubt it will ever fully recover, though I've read a few posts here and there that say they can. I'll let her run, but wondering about other's experiences

The Chemdog fems:

Looking forward to the journey, enjoying the beginnings!!

Agreed with @Cirroji
Clean it first lol

Yea that was in the pile to clean after last round and got forgotten. Follow-up question: Best method to get the liner back in with a 2'x4" bed inside a 2'x4' tent, full of soil, with a cover crop growing? Scoop soil out and reseed cover crop? Try and manhandle it out without disturbing the soil? Ug it was just so much work getting all that in the tent to begin with.

I'm inclined to run a cycle or two without the liner and monitor for any leaking outside the tent. How much do these beds runoff? Where does this land on a scale from "bad-idea" to "catastrophic-mess"?

Thanks everyone for your input!

Edit: fwiw will be hand watering so no watering system malfunctions to worry about other than user error on my part. Which is certainly possible.

Up-potted! Cannabis and tomatoes are upped to gallon and two gallon pots respectively. The muchacha autos are in their final bed, which will be crowded for the next 6 weeks.

Before:

Chemdog fem: (healthy happy photos)
PXL 20230407 220759216

Muchacha autos: (leaves were already looking odd, and they are already looked stunted)

And after up-potting:

Chemdog:

Muchacha autos: (tiny tiny!)

Also got my hair in a fungus gnat trap, and my cover crop is a bit mangled. Good day!!

Ok, so an update and a diagnosis request? My two 20twenty Muchacha autos' leaves are dark green, waxy, and curved down. Also, the plants seem stunted. They are in a 2x4 bed, BAS Coots mix. Ppfd around 250-350.

PXL 20230423 024220749

PXL 20230423 024216329

(Looks darker in person, as usual)

The two Chemdog photoperiods in pots, destined for outdoors, started out gangbusters, but are darkening and showing lightening around the edges. I did lst them (and HST one via a cracked stem), and had topped them a week or so prior.

I suspect N toxicity? And if that's correct, what does one do for the autos in the bed? I assume a flush on the photos in the pots would maybe suffice? Or just ride them out? Also, i just added worms yesterday, which was exciting!

Thanks all for your input! New to notill beds, and only my second year growing.

Ok, so I applied an epsom salt foliar spray at 1TBSP/gal, applied towards the end of the night for the Muchacha autos and Chemdog fems. We will see how that changes things.

But, let's change another variable, because that's how it works best, yes? Did some LST on the healthiest looking Muchacha auto. A simple bend, something to break that apical situation. Mostly though, just because i cannot leave well enough alone. Well, i left the gnarly looking auto alone.

PXL 20230427 030729919

LST continues on the Chemdog Fems that will be going outdoors!

PXL 20230427 030401839

Also, added worms! 1/2 lb from a local worm guy, and a few in each nursery pot because I figure it couldn't hurt? The paper bag is covering the castings which i think had some worm cocoons (???) in them. Very excited!

Worm poo is mostly N 2-0-0 so...

Well! At any rate, worms are good for the bed long term i think? Thanks for your comment! Other thoughts welcome.
Not being a smart ass. I just got bit by mixing 4-4-4 & worm castings in my medium. Not paying attention to that later mucked me up. I have/had nitrogen toxicity.

I appreciate all input as I'm new to growing and my first round of no-till indoor, mixing soil, etc.

What worked for you to get through N toxicity in no till? Or is this a re-mix my soil situation?

Edit to say, i think my plan generally is ride it out and focus on other plant and microbiology health and things will balance out. Thanks again!

The Muchacha autos in the 2x4 bed are plugging along, still having some bowing/clawing and pretty dark green. The second plant seems like a genetic weirdo.

The Chemdog fems are looking ok i think. One got topped 2x, the other 3x. I think. Ballpark. Please ignore the ugly tomato starts. Please don't ignore the beautiful peppers. They are all vegging out under an sf2000pro in a makeshift panda plastic veg-zone:

PXL 20230512 131921830

Popped some of the cuttings into some tiny soil blocks to see if they might root. 14days and i can't see anything much, I'll give them a good check in a few more days. I don't have high hopes for these.

PXL 20230510 023135319

Also one broken branch that i scraped the sides of and jammed in the soil. It's a few days later than the tiny clones. Hopes similarly low. But not zero!

PXL 20230510 023127832

All in all, it's been a fun start. If i ignore those tomatoes.

PXL 20230510 023036253

Current questions include: wtf with that weird auto? Anyone have success with starting clones in soil blocks? Or straight into soil? I'll be trying another, more serious round of clones from the Chemdog suckers at defoliation to use in the next indoor run.

Thanks y'all!

Ah the beauty. :/

Still don't know what's up with plant number two, but giving it a chance. Dialed the light back to ~390ppfd, taken with the photone app on a Nexus 6a. I dont think the 450-500 was helping it at all.
