Hello all, I’m growing a couple plants from seed and they are currently at day 56 of the 12/12 cycle. Growing in amended BAS under 470W HLG r-spec LEDs. My conditions are pretty dialed in.
The issue is one of the plants, a Super Sour Runtz from Atlas seeds, has very odd trichomes.
I’m not super educated on the different types of trichs, although I do know that there are several types. This plant is overwhelmingly covered with trichs that either have a stalk and no head or a stalk and very very small head. I’d say about 1/3rd of them are the “regular” ones with a stalk and a normal size head.
I’ve seen plenty of headless trichs but every plant I’ve ever grown has produced primarily the ones with nice round heads.
This is not from handling the buds or anything of the sort. I’m talking about every single bud has way more headless trichs than headed.
I’ve included a pic but my photography skill are limited……u cant see much detail. You’ll just hafta take my word for it.
From what I understand, essentially the only good trichomes are the ones with heads that move from clear/cloudy/amber, because the heads are what contains the good stuff.
What does everyone think.
Thanks for the help. Peace out.

Do they look like the middle and righthand pics?

If so, those are terpene trichomes. That's a good thing! They tend to form on leaves more than calyxes, which are mostly cannabinoid trichomes. Your buds will be very pungent and flavorful. 👍 Terpenes are the tune, thc just controls the volume.

seen this quite a few times over the years,I would be interested in the 'why" part but it doesnt effect the strength as far as I know. I wish i would have documented all the wierd plants ive grown over the past 50 yaers.

Actually they don’t look like any of those. Most are stalks with no head at all. Then quite a few with much smaller heads than normal. She’s got about 2 weeks left and the smell is fantastic…..kind of a creamy gassy combo with a hint of Elmer’s glue…But it’s not super strong…def more subtle but maybe my nose is more tolerant and just used to it.
Out of all the trichs, I’d say there are only about 1/3rd that actually have a head….
Weird…..

The more so called science they put to weed the worse it gets. We use to never get headless trichomes in the old days. A indica put your butt on the sofa or in the bed and sativas made you see colors and tracers and gave some folks extreme paranoia. Now it's relaxing and pain relief or creativity and energy. All marketing words now days for bunk junk weed.

What strain(s)? And the ones without heads don't look hair-like? The head is where your cannabinoids should be. Weird.

Your pic you posted was a good one. The one on the left is the THC trike head on a stalk. The middle and right one are terps. The one on a short stalk is a blend. The one on the surface of whatever it's attached to is a terp bomb. And these are the ones that give your plant the silver shimmer look in flower. Sometimes in late veg as they bleed there character. At any rate headless trikes are becoming a thing at a alarming rate. I see it more and more and a bit less silver shimmer as time goes on....

I’m thinking they are the non-glandular variety……but they don’t look like hairs either. Plus they’re not tapered to a pointy end. I dunno. They look like a stalk without the head. Maybe the heads are are just small and they’ll swell when they get closer to being mature. I’ve just never seen any like them on any of my plants.

Would be nice to see a close up shot of the trichs. What's your temperature?

There's 4 kinds of trichs. Capitate-stalked trichomes, Bulbous trichomes, Capitate-sessile trichomes, Cystolithic trichomes. If ur plant doesn't have one of these, genetics. Nice plant by the way....no need to worry.
