Please don't tell me you installed Norton. Or it's somehow installed by default.

Otherwise, how are you connecting? Dial up? DSL? Cable?

What did you do when you installed XP for the first time? What did you do right after that?

Try to disable the WindowsXP firewall completely.

how did you download firefox?

this has happened to me before. it was a bt downloaded os of microsoft. i played around in ie options, advanced, security er something. i thin it had something to do with active x controls. ...im not a tech geek. try resenting everything to default in options.
or try linux and run wine for all of your window needs- just say goodby to games if you do this.

Remove Norton, that'll solve all your problems.

I'm not gonna lie, Norton used to be a damn good program. But you know how people get when they have big money. They started not giving a shit about the quality of their product.

I know some die hard Norton users who've been using it since their inception and they've denounced it.

Norton is COMPLETE crap.

Yes i would have to agree remove norton, Your best bet would be to go with Kaspersky's Internet Suite, Has AV and FireWall. I figure if the russians Can make viruses and stuff their AV software should be amongst the best, and so far its been A1 for me. Also i think they have a trial or something , if not get it from bestbuy for less then 20$ they have sales weekly on it.

You can do it with the IE switching agent with firefox.

Id recommend Comodo Personal Firewall and Avast Antivirus, both are free and definitely less of a resource hog than Kaspersky.

You already have a hardware wireless router Hubcap, that firewall is gonna block incoming attempts better than any software firewall is.

You only need to worry about stopping rogue outgoing connections, and that's what Comodo firewall is for.

Avast Antivirus is very decent, as long as you're not retarded and double click on everything you see.....and I mean that in a nice way lol.

Remove Norton through the add/remove programs. Then reboot. You will be able to download things at the reboot. If you STILL can't. Sorry Hubcap, but reinstall time.

Otherwise I'd get familiar with Start > Run >CMD and type in 'ftp', then help. And figure out how to 'get' the file from ftp.symantec.com You're gonna have to figure out how to change to the correct directory using 'cd' from within ftp.

When I was on Windows XP, the best thing you could do was shut down unneeded services through

Start > Run > services.msc

I've always followed BlackViper's recommendations concerning services.msc

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm You can tweak or modify this list to your liking of course. If you're gonna do anything, I suggest shutting down or disabling services one by one, so if anything craps out, you can just simply enable it again.

I also used WehnTrust to stop Buffer Overflow Attacks:

http://www.codeplex.com/wehntrust/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=16198

I did use Sygate Personal Firewall, but Norton bought them out. Comodo was my second pick.

I just talked to a Windows Admin friend of mine and he said that if you feel comfortable paying for something, Eeye's Blink is the best:

http://www.eeye.com/html/products/blink/

Eeye is a VERY good security company, been in the business for corporate clients for a long time, now they offer things for home users.

Sounds like a firewall problem to me, because you've got web access fine through port 80, but no FTP on port 21. Try turning it off and seeing if that fixes the problem, but make sure you turn it back on again after your test.

So let me get this straight..new pc...new OS..browsing fine...no downloads? The only other thing I can think of is you've got Vondo already (nasty virus), but that's a stretch for a brand new box.

I thought all new computors and laptops came with vista these days. I bought a new laptop the other week with vista premium, and i think it's fantastic. It jusy installs intself. Anything you stick in the usb slot, the laptop finds the files and drivers it needs aitomatically for you over the net, so no messing with cds. I've never know anything so easy.

Only downside to it is, despite being dual core, having 3gb ram and 250bg hardrive, the graphics card isn't good enough to play the latest games like killzone and fallout 3, un less on maybe the very lowest resolution settings.

But i heard alot of people moaning about vista before i got it, and wanting xp back. I'd never go back tp xp, vista is much easier for someone whos not amazing with latops and the like.

i didnt like it.
im the type that gets accustomed to a way....and fear any deviation, lol.

XP is fine for my needs. and i understand, kinda, how things work, but finding what i need to set, and then setting it CORRECTLY is not exactly user friendly for us less tech-savvy.

but, i still cant get d/s from microsoft but i can download just about anything else.
other sites dont let me d/l but i need to be able to bounce back and forth from microsoft...

is there a SIMPLE ping test i can run just to, maybe, see if they are even hearing me?????

Just do a reinstall dude, quick format. You're back in 2 hours. You're gonna be wasting more time searching for a fix. Just don't install Norton next time around, get Comodo Personal Firewall. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html

Then http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Norton can somehow allow pings and other network tools, they just distort the filtering. It's just a bad program to have on your computer. I would try to return it, just say it simply doesnt work. If they ask you any questions just say I dont know it doesnt work so I had to reinstall windows xp. They're like cops and try to get you to say something that they can have an answer to from a script, and deny the refund or store trade-in.

If they wont allow your money back just get something else like Mcafee, they should have that for sure.

I don't think a proxy is gonna solve your problems. But try privoxy http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ijbswa/privoxy_setup-3_0_11.exe?use_mirror=superb-west

can i ask, specifically, why you dislike norton?
my old man works DoD and swears by it...
but these are work pcs behind major security from the start....

i just might reinstall. didnt get TOO much into downloading....the codes...drivers....music....vids.....programs...argh!

tks for all your time btw..
i know all these questions get repetitive

cant we nominate you as a resident "tech guru?"

got MY vote

Yes those are both good programs kill-9, i was suggesting Kaspersky As more of a Replacement for Norton, Most people like to have something they can purchase and have the Cd of And if thats the Case then yea Kaspersky is much better then One Care, All Norton, Mcafee, AVG and all the others that are mainstream, The Router Firewall is teh best because its Hardware but most users dont know how to configure them properly so unless you know how to configure all that then softwares the easier way.

So if Cheap and Easy is what ya want go with Avast or Comodo.

Thats just my .02 Feel Free to just go with whatever you want.
