Plus I’ll be transplanting rather soon. My pots are only about 6 ounces. I’m going to 3/4 gallons next and then either 5 or 7 gallons after that. I know I don’t necessarily need the intermediate transplant but with my insane schedule, it will be easier for me to manage waterings this way.

I’m actually leaving town tomorrow night for a few days. I was thinking about transplanting everything tomorrow so that my wife wouldn’t have to check on watering them at all. Dangerously early to go into 3/4 gallon pots or a decent move to make now?

Also my 2’ T5 lights aren’t cutting it in terms of being able to spread the plants out, which are starting to shade each other. Once I transplant I’ll switch to 400 watts of MH, probably 24-30” away to start.

i’ve seen a guy use T5’s for the entire grow with quite good success..
here’s 4 plants just before being moved under 1000w MH..
so you definitely have time..

Beautiful! I know I do technically have time left in these pots, but for the sake of my leaving town, I’m planing to pot up tomorrow unless anyone has strong advice against it. Doing so now will negate them needing to be watered while I’m away.

Or maybe I misunderstood you. You saying I have time under T5’s? That would be true but once they get transplanted the 2’ bulbs won’t give enough coverage for 9 plants..

Oh I do have another question (another of many more to come I’m sure..). I’ve been leaving the T5’s on for 24 hours. Once I switch to MH, I’d like to drop that to 18/6, unless there’s some case against making that switch.

i would start at 18/6.. or 17/7.. why 24?..
the most daylight hours outdoors barely reaches 17 hours than decreases.. if you notice outdoors say when a seedling naturally sprouts it’s under less than 14 hours light (that would start flowering with mature plants) but it’s not mature enough to flower, so as the plant grows and gets closer to maturity the hours in the day have also increased preventing the plant from flowering until the hours have decreased enough..
this id like to try indoors as it would take a lot less energy. etc.. but too much work for me to do..

I started at 24/0 because I didn’t have anything dialed in yet with the environment and needed the heat. Now all is well and I’d like to switch to 18/6.

My questions are coming less from anxiety and more from a desire to gain knowledge so that in the future when I see things that I’ve already seen before that I can help answer new grower’s questions instead of asking them :)
This is a great forum for learning. I've learned a lot just by reading threads, looking at pictures and seeing what works (and, of course, what doesn't). There are surprisingly many things to know about growing good weed. That depth of knowledge is what makes it a fun pastime. It seems there's always something new to learn.

mmmm you got me interested in those nutrients, i like those NPK ratios..
PREMA Organic Line of products. Great alternative to famous chemical salt-based product "pro" lines. Easy to switch - same feeding charts but also includes root enhancing biology, humic, fulvic and even amino acids.

Water soluble powder. Core, Grow & Flower formulas.

Includes all the NPK, micronutrients, amino acids, humic acids, fulvic acids, cold water kelp, mycorrhizae, saprophytic fungi, trichoderma, nutrient solubilizing bacteria and more

  • Organic CORE - 14-0-0-7.5Ca
  • Organic GROW - 2-6-20-5Ca Growth stage
  • Organic Flower - 0-6-24-5Ca Flowering stage
really very interesting ratios for a organic based.
USDA organic aproved too.

I actually went with the pro line and not the prema line. I spoke with the owner and he said the pro line was ultimately simpler and didn’t seem to think one was better than the other. Perhaps the prema line is superior in the hands of someone with more experience.

I’ll let ya’ know how the nutrients and their soil perform! I should probably start a grow journal..

add another T5 side light. for more penetration through the canopy. I have a variety of t5's, a 2ft 2 tube I start my girls under a 4ft 2 tube I add as they get bigger, a 4 ft 6 tube and a 4 ft single tube after they out grow the 2ft tubes 2ft I transplant and turn on the 2 tube 4ft, then transplant into a 3 gal and move under my 4ft 6 tube as they grow I turn on the single 4ft attached to the wall at mid plant height. I like t5's right up to flowering but they are getting harder to find replacement l;amps for, I think they get banned from being made in a few years if not sooner.

I wish I could just put my 4’ T5’s in there but they won’t fit in the 3x3 tent, obviously. Since I have the 400 watt MH all setup I think in the short term (which unfortunately is all that matters when you’re poor..), using that as opposed to buying other 2’ T5 ballast makes the most sense to me. Also the heat will be helpful so it’s very possible that even now before winter, the 400 watt bulb will be cheaper than running my central heat.

Yes your right I missed the 3x3 part but you can hang the vertical too single 4ftters down the walls. Adding up my wattage I'm over 400 with everything on And I hang a 150 watt heat lamp above my lights for heat when I need it, I've a 50w reptile heater on in there now it adds a 2 degrees close to my seedlings.

I used HPS for years and loved my 400w for vegging then flipped to a 1000w for flower. I think I'd still use it if I had it. Heat and light in 1 package and in cold climates we need the heat

Any advice on initial distance from the canopy to the 400 watt? Maybe 24” to start, maybe even 30” for a day and then bring it closer a couple inches every day until they’re getting as much as they can handle?
