New outdoor grower

We are cookie bakers, recently moved to Northern Virginia from Colorado. Seeds, purchased from Pacific, just went into germination soil at our family farm. We'll be growing in our backyard with huge wooden barrel planters that we just bought from Home Depot. I have significant experience with growing plants but zero with growing cannabis, so any tips would be appreciated.

Fertilizer: Osmocote
Seed strains: Alaskan Thunder Fuck, 24K Gold, and Banana OG

Still winter, but our family has a farm with hot houses where we've just started our seeds. They'll get them going for us and we'll move the seedlings (or plants) into large wooden barrel planters at the end of April.

I grow outdoors as well. It’s legal in NY. Last year a reserved space in my vegetable garden. Since I had worked that soil for a while after I transplanted held back most all feeding. I did now and again prepare a slurry of powdered alfalfa leaves. This stuff - https://www.thcfarmer.com/profile/1270659/

At a height of 2 feet I eliminate the N2 and feed the plant triple phosphate, 0-45-0. No heavy feeding but a definite shift.

Beware of osmocote it slowly dissolves over time. Probably eliminating you ability to fiddle with the plant.

I’m a huge fan of foliar feeding. Epsom salts and FeSO4. Very light applications now and again. I mist in the late afternoon so it has a chance to dry before dark and absorb at night under less stress.

But that’s my situation. If you can grow a tomato you can grow cannabis. EXCEPT for all the folks taking this on in tents, hydroponics , aeroponics - all ponics. That is not easy. The learning part is harvest timing, drying then curing the buds.

Yes, legal here in Virginia. When I lived in NJ, many years ago, I grew several varieties of tomatoes, so I'm not that concerned about knowing how to grow cannabis. My real questions will be harvesting, curing, and trimming in the fall. We're hoping to yield several pounds, enough for our baking needs for a year. Buying weed in DC is twice as expensive as Colorado and because we bake hundreds of dozens of cookies each year, we need keep our overall cost as low as possible. Trust me, I'd be just as happy to buy from the gray market if I could find a local source.

We've got the barrel planters positioned to get maximum sunlight. To satisfy the law, they can't be seen from the street. The previous owners put in a six-foot privacy fence around the entire backyard. The planters are close enough to the house to get protection from heavy winds.

They still need minimum of 14 hours of light, preferably closer to 15. That doesn't happen until June here in NY, so I need to start inside under lights. If you put photoperiod plants out before there is enough light they will get confused, think it's fall, start to flower, then possibly reveg come longer days. Timing is very important with photos outside... if you want to plant very early in spring, autos are always an option. For you, April is pushing it, still only 12 odd hours, I'd wait till at least May.
