Oh boy, here we go.....my 1st grow in nearly 30 years

When I said hello I said that I had grown in a city apartment closet back in the late 80s-mid 90s. In 1988 I ordered Skunk #1 and Northern Lights seeds from Neville's Seed Bank and a 400w ckunky Metal Halide. I saved the pictures, not the genetics.......my teenage girlfriend and I moved in together.....we had fun. I have the stacks of High Times and books....

By around 1994, I had to stop growing, eventually a kid came along.....life. i knew one day I'd grow again. Plus. Skunk #1 will always be available......

My State is legal. Legal.......for 40+ years......things sucked. Now I can order Blueberry Fuel Skunk Chernobyl? And grow it? I'm still absorbing this. But, we got a house with some quiet property, a bit remote....but up north. Short seasons, early freezes (generally)...

This summer I put out a few testers, Strawberry Widow seeds from a friend, probably not 100%, and mixed a few of the seeds he made but not too sure of the genetics. I put 3 females outside in the sunniest area, where I'm looking to have 6 large females out there every year from now on. I'm working a patch big enough for them.

Thankfully the fall was unusually warm. Almost unheard of. It dipped below freezing just a few mornings in October, but it's usually a month that ushers in winter.......November was like another September, and beside one decent snowfall that melted away, the New Year saw no snow on the ground. Weird. Even January has been more rain than snow.

So I got to harvest the 3 females from Oct 20th to Nov 1st. Unheard of. And, I had to pollinate. I wanted seeds. I pollinated all 3 females with a big, tall, Indica dominant male. So these will be some sort of Strawberry Widow x Unknown Indica dom male. Sorry, it's all I got. I'll try to see what strain it might be close tò, i have pics of these too.........not bad for outdoor, kinda far up north........

So, now it's time. My 1st Indoor grow in nearly 30rs. After this I'll try to keep the stories to a minimum, and not report in on every day at every little stage......

I'll be planting tomorrow. Here are the details:

1/15/23: Talking about growing. Not actually doing anything. Just yapping away, wasting time and stalling. Waiting for the "right day". Tomorrow's actually a better day......

6' x 12' basement closet

1. HLG Scorpion Diablo
1. HLG Scorpion Rspec

12 x 5gallon* pots will fit in the space (3 rows of 4 pots each = 12 ) *Thinking of going 7gal.

I grow in soil. Dirt. Good dirt. Top soil, Pete moss, perlite, guano, worm castings.......I'll do what I can to keep the Ph dialed in. Mountain well water, filtered, Ph adjusted, probably don't need to add any extra food until near flowering

Planting ~40 seeds in 40 16oz peat pots. The goal is for at least 30 to pop, and live past the seedling stage.

Then the goal is for at least 12 strong Females. More would be great, we'll find a way to let them grow ;). 12 Strong females, 1 in each of the 12 pots. And 3 really big strong males for pollen.....

I will be adding UVB light during the 2nd half of flowering after acclimating them. I'm going to be making seeds with a certain portion of the best plants that I want to cross. I like working with heirlooms, landraces, the old-school strains, and I'd like to breed and create some interesting things, besides preserving strains.......

But I'll also grow some of the crazy new hybrids going around.... :)

Here's pictures of the closet, outside the closet is part of the boiler room, all of that stuff will soon be gone, the tanks, everything......we are switching from oil to propane. So outs8de of the closet I'll build a big grow box for making seedlings, so I can rotate new small plants in more quickly.

I do plan on regrowing and re-flowering the same plants twice. I always get a great 2nd harvest.

Besides these Strawberry Widow x Unkown Indica seeds I'm popping (1st time using the paper towel method, they're just popping after 48+ hours. I could make it a little warmer......

Tomorrow I'll list all the seeds I bought over the last couple of months. Maybe some ideas for which ones I should run 1st, 2nd........keeping in mind I'm looking to breed......

I have probably 25+ different varieties, almost all "Regular" / photoperiod.

Straight 3% peroxide or plain water. The kernel needs moisture to germinate plus it softens the hinge, soaking overnight til they sink speeds up the process. Peroxide would kill any pathogens on the seed as unlikely as that seems.

I have no idea what the germination rate will be, but I'm giving extra cushion to allow for some seeds that won't pop, some seedlings that won't make it, some stunted or undesirable plants.......then the possibility of greater than 50% males. I'd rather plant 35+ seeds to end up with 12 select females, than plant 25 seeds and end up with only 8 or 10.

I'm sure I'll end up with a few more than 12, but that I can handle. ;)

All of these seeds should be good and healthy. We shall see.

I have no problem soaking seeds in a mild peroxide solution for like, 12 hours before popping them......even if they're good and healthy, I don't see that causing any harm. Maybe I'll experiment with some of the seeds I made, there's certainly enough of them. It's so weird breaking up buds (carefully, with scissors) and hearing the [plunk, plunk] sound of seeds falling into a box.

Ok, here's my seeds/strains list. I'm going to sleep on it one more night, see if anyone has any recommendations about which ones to grow first.......based on which strains might make good crosses......I probably won't listen, and then I'll plant tomorrow. ;)

Yes, I'll definitely listen to breeding recommendations.......

I have these "peat cups", I think they're 16oz cups, I'll check on that. I'm also still torn about using paper towels to sprout. I've always planted direct and always had good results. I did try out about 15 of my Strawberry Widow x Unknown Indica Dom male seeds in paper towel, it's been 72 hours and almost all of them sprouted. Still, I just don't know. Maybe I'll do half and half.

Ii figure I'll have about 3 weeks to get the closet totally ready while the seedlings grow in the peat cups before transplanting in 7 gallon pots. I'm getting a water hose connection, filtration, Ph tester, hanging the 2 LEDs, and having fire suppression tanks installed above the lights.

I will be planting 35+ seeds to end up with 12 Females, and 2 or 3 big strong males.

The Strawberry Widow x Unknown Indica dom Male seeds I made this summer

There might be a few I have that I haven't accounted for, I'll go through them all tomorrow (they're in the fridge), because I know I placed orders with Neptune and MSNL but didn't write them down yet.

For anyone who wants to make suggestions, as you look through the list, which ones stand out that you would cross? When it comes to the heirlooms/landraces, I'll want to preserve them too, so I'll need to layer them over time, or I'd have to swim in pollen. ;)

I used paper towels way back in the 70’s, it works but the roots are so fragile. Soaking has the same moisturizing effect on the seed when it sinks, just doesn’t sprout til its planted. Here’s a guide for seed orientation, point up. The soil will pull the shell off

I totally agree with this. Good, warm, fluffy soil, moist but spongy, and the seeds right side up. Let 'em sprout and dry it out.......as soon as the sprout pops up......a very light breeze, no more water, firesh air, fight stem rot. Leave them alone and water them when they need it. Give them every chance to take root and establish.

Anthony Bourdank really great name -- very descriptive. Anything with the name Columbian also has my vote -- you might also look at some of the girls being raised by @Trustfall on this site. Many people (and some aliens) are growing out some crazy looking ganja from there. I would advocate printing/writing up a bunch of labels for the seeds. You sound very experienced but just a reminder that chances for getting Female plants increases with; at least 4" high initial pots, warmer humidity, steady temp and lights. Looking forward to following and welcome to the Farm

Ok, so I've made my devisions and I'm ready to plant. I might add one more strain, I'm really torn. But my overall goal here is to build syrains over time by crossing some basics to start, like building a foundation. Each grow I'll cross certain strains and store those seeds well. Eventually I'll have run through the strains I have, and start working the various crosses I've made and do my next rounds of crossing. I'll be adding new ones from time to time, especially landraces and Heirlooms, but also some new strains. I realize this will take time, but that what this is all about, sending years growing, developing, and enjoying the new things you create........

Going through all the seeds there were 2 batches/orders I forgot to write down, so they didn't make it on my list earlier in this thread.

And of course, adjustments are being made and will be made as I go along

I'm planting about 60 total seeds, maybe more (for enough of each strain) of: (and I might add 1 more strain to the mix)

1. Mazar (2 sources)

2. Big Bud

3. Critical

3. MSNL Blueberry

4. Skunk / "Skunk#1" (3 sources)

5. Banana Kush

6 "Thai Stick" (MSNL)

One goal is to cross the Thai with Banana Kush, Blueberry, and Mazar

Another goal is to cross the best of the different Skunks

Many people (and some aliens) are growing out some crazy looking ganja from there. I would advocate printing/writing up a bunch of labels for the seeds. You sound very experienced but just a reminder that chances for getting Female plants increases with; at least 4" high initial pots, warmer humidity, steady temp and lights. Looking forward to following and welcome to the Farm

It's kind of like I need to do the reverse of what I most want to grow. First if all I need the practice. I'm proficient at it, but it's been avwhile. I'm not going to start with rare Thai, or finicky ones, or DJ Short stuff.......I want to start mostly with building blocks, and work my way up and into more intriguing atrains and crosses.

And thank you, I'm definitely setting high goals (ha!), and I fully realize that a lot can go wrong, and I can and most likely will nake mistakes......I can think of a few things already that are at least a tall order. But one step at a time, one thing at a time, and I'll do the best I can.....

I've seen some of Trustfall's posts, and others. Their results are excellent. I hope some of it will rub off..... ;)

Ok, it's not easy getting a handle on everything when placing a variety of orders around the sane time. I got myself confused (easy to do) after just getting my last package from Barney's Farm. So I go researching to find my order with them to make sure everything matches up......

It wasn't with Barney's, I ordered through The Vault. So, add these to the mix. And I'll probably run a few of these "Fem Autos", which I really don't like, because I won't use either to breed with......but they will give us some unique flower to have from this first run......

Also, I need another day to plant, the workers are here doing our switch from oil to propane so there's a lot going on, but the good part is that the giant old tanks and old water heater are gone, there's a new, smaller propane boiler, and that will free up a lot more space.......the main grow/flower closet is 6' x 12' but outside the closet is anout 10' x 12' of new, usable space.

I’m still hunting the original bubblegum to not much avail
I did get some more from serous seeds however after I read the nugs were bigger but the taste wasn’t bubblegum at all.
Guess I’ll see however not expecting much.
With all the new strains sone good ones got lost still saying that some of the newer ones are quite nice.
