Triploid.....that's the word I was thinking of....not tripod. Unless the plant has 3 feet, then yes....tripod.
So I have 20 fails in one form or another. I had actually started with 80 total seeds, including 10 of the (Strawberry/Widow x Unknown Indica Dom Male) that I grew outdoors over the summer. A friend gave me the seeds who doesn't really keep tight track of genetics. The 2 Females definitely seemed like Strawberry Widow in terms of all the attributes. One got deep purple near the end when it got cold, and the other was a natural triploid, which of course made it get nice and branchy, it kind of grew like a cutting.......the male I pollinated them both with was a big tall strong guy that looked at least mostly Indica but not like an Afghani. And I pollinated the heck out of them. I pollinated them as soon as the male opened up, so on the early side for the females, but still, each female must have made 500+ seeds, and they got nice and ripe/dark. So between all of those factors I'm really interested in seeing how the seeds turn out indoors, and I'm particularly interested in seeing if I can hunt for triploids......I'm pretty sure it's not only recessive, but rare......but with so many seeds I really hope to find some turn up and I'll do my best to breed 'em. If I can get a triploid male and a triploid female........it may still be recessive but that might increase the chances.....maybe one grow down the road I'll run just these only.
Anyway 20 fails, stunted, fell, stem rot, or not otherwise strong enough. I now have 60 good seedlings, waiting on leaf set 2 to show. I think things are going a bit slow, I'm not surprised.......it's been 15 days since I put them into paper towels, about 12 days since planting the sprouts into cups.....all the domes are off.....
I could also have kept things a bit warmer. The area has been mostly just below 70. And maybe if I planted them more quickly, and had the main light already ready, they'd show less stretching and be a little bigger. Nothing terrible, and yeah I still gotta hang the main light, there's always something to do first, and cleaning the closet, making sure the area is clean even outside of it........that's important. They've at least had 2 LED screw-in grow bulbs, a screw-in flourescent, and surrounded by windows, sunlight too. Lifgts have been on 24 this whole time.
With these 60, little by little, if they don't show decent strength, progress......I'll be getting rid of about another 20 until near flower time. I'll be able to see which strains made it better than others, and also which seed companies did better.
I will take strains into account. And growth pattern/looks too. If you only save "the biggest ones" you could naturally end up with more males. Also, some strains may just naturally grow more slowly than others, or look smaller.......if you prune those out you could be eliminating or nearly eliminating a great strain.....
